Amazing what one artisan can do on their own just at a home studio now in the modern age we live in. How exciting and encouraging I find this for following your passions, we have access to such amazing resources in todays age. Myself I just started the orchid growing hobby. I forgot how fun it is to actively do things, instead of how easy it is with our access to entertainment just letting life pass by. This is hyping me up to want to start another hobby!

What is the point of throwing this vessel in two parts? It is a simple enough form.
@theslowbuild

I'm not sure why exactly, will see if Abi has a chance to respond. Hope you enjoyed the video
@abihiggins1743
@abihiggins1743 Жыл бұрын
I agree, but the traditional way to throw a Moon Jar (a Korean storage jar) is to throw it in two parts and join them. I like to bring tradition into my pots, to honer the potters of the past and to feel the connection of past and present in the craft. The Korean potters were clever realising it is much less taxing using two smaller pieces of clay enabling them to scale up to make a much bigger forms if they wanted to. There is so much to learn from the historical traditions, its such a fascinating craft.

Are there more, less, or the same proportion of women:men in pottery compared to other artistic disciplines? For the purpose of this conversation, I’m not including acting, music, dance. So “visual arts” I guess (painting, sculpture, textiles, wood, metal &c). Stuff you’d study at art college.

I recently took a ceramics course at a large university in the Midwest US, and there were only about 3 or 4 men in a class of about 25 students, if that’s any indication of sex-based interest level in this part of the world.

Self serving, What is to be gained from this video ? Where or what is the formula for this glaze and what is the firing temperature ?
@theslowbuild
@theslowbuild Жыл бұрын
Ah John... This channel is not intended to be for instructional videos though if there is enough demand I may look into it in the future. It's more an experiential type vibe. That said, I believe the second firing with the copper wash went to 1000°C. Don't know what was in the copper wash though Abi may be able to answer...

Well, watching a potter throw is such a useful thing to do when you are starting out. The hand coordination and positions. Watching when the hands move up the pot and noticing how the hands and the rotation coordinate. Pottery is all about deep a deep connection of coordination between the hand and eye which can not be over looked or hurried and watching an experienced hand is such a good way of learning. The glazing and firing comes after a good pot is thrown.
@abihiggins1743
@abihiggins1743 Жыл бұрын
And I should have said, to answer your question better really, the video is about the just watching someone make something with no attachment to it or for any learning reason, just for the pleasure of watching. I hope that helps.
