Pottery Glazing Tutorial: Wax Resist

Hello Pottery folk! Welcome to a tutorial on how to use Wax On Resist for pottery decoration. I will be walking you through my creative process and sharing the ins and outs of wax resist, including tips and the many hardships I encountered. I made this video for my Pottery 2 students, so enjoy baby birds!
Here are some specifics on the technical side:
1. I started this video with an already bisque fired vase.
2. I am firing low fire.
3. Bisque firings are to cone 05.
4. The glaze firing is to cone 04, as I have found a hotter firing works best for the matte underglaze.
5. All of the underglazes are Amaco Lug and Velvet.
6. Chinese bamboo calligraphy brushes are my favorite brushes for glazing, as they can hold a lot of liquid.

That took an incredible amount of work but it was well worth it. It looks perfect to me. I only wax the bottoms of my work but maybe I’ll get braver and incorporate it into my surface decorating. Thanks for an informative video.

lots of great advice and tips, would almost put some people going anywhere near wax resist. a lot of extra work went into that pot, it looked amazing in the end. as I'm a newbie in comparison to your years in ceramics, I'm still at the point of needing to rush work through only to be disappointed. I'm now seeing, the way forward in that doing more work in the making and decorating is worth it in the end. you having to repaint that pattern in black and white was so worth it. i see that now. thankyou, for all your videos. they are amazing, i only wish my art teacher had been anything like you, i might not have chosen what i did instead thanks

Linnea you may want to try watering down the Wax On, it still works and you can get crisper edges. Love your videos.

Just discovered your channel and love your delivery. I am very interested on making slipware and watched your video on it. But can you make a follow-on one where you: 1) add an Iron Oxide (Red, Black, or Yellow Ochre) to your vanilla slip, mix it, then apply it. Can you focus on the proportions of Iron Oxide, Sodium Silicate, and soda ash. Would be so helpful

Thanks for watching, Damon. My slip unit got cut short this year :o Depending on whether or not we are allowed back at school next year, it is one of my goals to expand my slip unit into using colored slips. Thanks for the request, it is on the docket!

Great video thanks! Have you tried using Liquid latex instead of wax resist? I haven't used it myself (yet) but I heard that it solves the whole glaze beading issue as you can peel it off. Not sure if it leaves cleaner lines though

Have you tried Speedball clear glaze? It goes on pink & works excellent.

I’ve never tried speedball anything other than India ink 🤩, but with all the shortages, I’m about to experiment with their underglazes. Amaco’s clear gloss sounds similar, pink. I usually choose a matte clear so that the finish is less glossy and I can see more of the design, but gloss is way less temperamental! Thanks for watching and for the helpful suggestion!

When you use wax resist, do you have to wipe it down before firing ? I know it sounds a bit dumb but I’ve seen some do it.

If there is glaze still on top, yes. That’s why I had such a hard time with such a tiny pattern. If you don’t wipe if off it will show up. Good luck.

I am wondering if maybe the pencil marks came off in a higher heat firing?

This is still a mystery because they were the same temp as I do low fire. But I have never had this happen with any other type of pencil. This one pencil is the only one I’ve had this anomaly with: the Staedtler Norica 132 46 HB2 pencil. And even in the end it went away.
