Poultry in Motion Automata

An automata chicken coop inspired by than of Lisa Slater of the UK. I had been asked about making an automata that could be hung on the wall and operated and when I came across Lisa's stable on the CMT site, I had to make my own version. The four chickens dance for visitors to the hen house. Opening the nest box doors you can see the simple mechanisms and a few misplaced eggs.

Hi, love this automata. I am trying to recreate the motion that the chicken that tips side to side (the second door that opens) for one of my school projects. How does that work? I know that it is two followers and cams pushing up on either side of the chicken or at least that is what I gather but how do you get the chicken to stay in one place?

I would have made it differently using connectors with the chiseled side on the tap. Do you know what I’m saying? Great work either way.

No problem. Both of them move with the assistance of hinges attached to their bottoms. The first has the hinge pin aligned side to side and the push rod positioned behind the hinge pushing up and causing the hen to rotate forward. Gravity allows it to fall back. The next has the hinge aligned front to back and the push rod causes it to tip side to one side and then it falls back.

Remove the pin from a small hinge. Screw half the hinge on the bottom of the hen and screw the other half to the board it sits on, then reinsert the pin. You should bevel the hen's bottom that rocks side to side.

I want to make a similar version for my grandpa, but with him being in 90's and me strapped for time to make it, did you hand make the hens? Or if not can you reveal your source?

+Al Conquergood I sent you a email, but not sure if you got it. so sending another. are the chickens carved or are the compound ? ( three D with a scroll saw?) I have never carved.. but have done compound cutting with a scroll saw.

I find when use Automaton to those other than enthusiasts they always jump to the image of a robot in the image of a person, but using Automata opens a broader opportunity for conversation. But you are right it literally correct.
