Today I'm comparing the results of three versions of pouring mediums:
GAC800 + Floetrol
GAC500 + Floetrol
And just Floetrol
Come along and listen as I describe what I'm doing, and you decide which of these three mixes yielded the best result. ENJOY!

I like the consistency you used. Every artist have their own consistency for different types of pour. I Also appreciate the fact that you didn’t use water to skew the results. All three pours came out brilliantly .. unique and with no muddying. And because of the consistency you used, every color that you used, stood out in each pour. Great job. I wish I could see the dry results too.

Oh thank you so much! They dried virually the exact same as the final wet results, I agree, without the water you get a better experiement. You should try it! Enjoy!

I definitely thought all paints were too thick. Would be interested to see what happens if it was much thinner. Want to believe the gac 500 has potential as it did better than the floetrol mix. Aslo, when it comes to cloud pours, the more you can stretch, the greater your tendency for cells. Would like to see more experiments. Thanks for doing this..

Agreed! I have another test experiment coming up using DecoArt Premixed pouring paints, and they are so thick I wished I had added some water (which thwarts the test, of course) Thank you for commenting, and i look forward to watching your channel too! xoxo AVA

Thankyou so much Angela for taking the time to share this information. It is good to have this understanding of paint reaction. I was wondering what, if anything , would a pour be like with a mix of both the Gac800 and Gac500. I may give it a go. I liked each one for different reasons but I think the 500 would be great for building structure into a work. Thankyou again for your generosity in doing and sharing this experiment. ❤️🦋🇦🇺

I’m a newbie to acrylic pouring. Great video, all the results were stunning. I love the results of the GAC 500 the best, the cells and the strong color consistency. However, I liked the GAC 800 for the easy of flow. What I’d like to know is the difference in the drying time. Thank you for sharing. You have a new follower.

Hello Red Gemini Arts (great name!) The GAC 500 is specifically designed to create a longer "open" time, meaning it takes the longest to dry but not by much. I found the best rule is that the thicker the paint the longer to dry (no matter the medium. Things dry faster when it is warmer and dryer, too. I look foward to following you too!

I tend to use more thicker paints so that wouldn't stop me from using it. I wonder if a 50/50 mix of 800 plus 500, then the floetrol would make any difference? Also could the last painting have been harder to move because it was the last one you did and sat longer? Great experiment though. I always wondered about the other GAC numbers. I use GAC 800 all the time. Here in Canada our floetrol seems to be much thinner and if I use a Deco Art paint, I am always struggling to get my paint a bit thicker.

You are aksing the BEST and MOST important questions! The only way to find out is to keep trying, experiement. That is interesting about the Canadian floetrol being thinner. Try cutting way back on the Floetrol, add PVA White Glue (Elmers) to thicken. I love DecoArt paints, too, they have a lot of pigment so can handle additives. I am looking forward to seeing what you make! All the best, Angela

Thank you so much for sharing this experiment! Each has unique qualities and I really can't pick a fav. I recently heard about ppl using GAC 500 in pouring and really wanted to know how it differs from GAC 800. I think GAC 500 has real potential if thinned with a more fluid medium like GAC 100 or airbrush medium - it was a tad too thick. Perhaps even combined with GAC 800. How much of the pouring medium did you mix with the acrylic paints - 50-50? Also, what was in your base paint? Have you ever had issues with weakened binding quality in your finished pieces? I'm so paranoid about using too much floetrol. It's mostly water; I think it's 70% or more. I found the specs one time but can't remember where, so, not positive about that. Again, thanks for sharing!

would have liked to have seen them dry, good experiment though, I agree with it being too thick, maybe a better test would be equal amounts of water added, as I have never seen paint this thick being used as it wasn't really pouring consistency, still nice outcomes though

I like them all! But I think with the 800 and floetrol. Thank you for testing. I didn’t know you could add anything else to floetrol. Is it nessesary. Can you tell me what makes paint crack when it dries? Thank you so much!
@HeyRaeSunnyDay
@HeyRaeSunnyDay 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your thoughtful questions, Cynthia! Many factors can make paint crack, expecially tempuratures: if your painting is thick and the top layer dries first (forms a skin) while the underneath stays wet, the skin may pull away (crack) as the bottom moisture tries to escape in the drying process. When you add GAC800 in theory it all dries evenly to help avoid this. And yes, different paint mediums (floetrol, GACs, Liquitex) can be added together for both effects like cells or no cells, or gloss finishes. The recipe I like, which avoids cracking but does not give a lot of cells is: 70% Floetrol 20% PVA White Glue (Elmers) 10% GAC800. Best of luck and be sure to have fun!! xoxo Angela

This being August and all, I'm late in the game but have found you, love the vid and have subscribed. I'm wondering...on the 500....have you tried adjusting this as you spoke of? I love this one the best of all but also wonder if any cracking occurred. Did you save the pieces as they are for a while to test on the the cracking? I think that is 800's claim to fame....or am I wrong? I'm wondering about further experiments. I also have an unused bottled of GAC 100. Don't know what to do with it! Anyway, loved this...thankyou!
@HeyRaeSunnyDay
@HeyRaeSunnyDay 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carol! Great questions. Unfortunately I did not save the experimental finished pieces, but none of them cracked. I have been using the GAC 500 occasionally in my pours as a pouring medium (not so much as a paint drying extender) and it works just fine. Yes GAC800's claim to fame is that is reduces crazing and this is true. But, more and more, I feel crazing is caused by adding too much water, which breaks down the pigment bonds. GAC100 could work too in paint pouring. The on-line description says, " Dilute and extend colors, and increase flexibility and film integrity with Golden GAC 100 Primer Extender Acrylic Polymer Mediums. Wets out solids more readily than other polymers, and is useful for artists making their own paints." In the end this all experiemental and so much fun! I look forward to seeing your work too, if you decide to film it. All the best, Angela AVA Arts

If GAC 500 is a medium why do people still use floetrol with it?? It seems they are both extenders...??
@HeyRaeSunnyDay
@HeyRaeSunnyDay 3 жыл бұрын
Really good question, Paulette. They both extended the wet time of paint, the main difference I notice is 1) GAC500 will have a gloss finish when dry; and 2) floetrol seems to interact with paint to generate more cells than GAC500.

@@HeyRaeSunnyDay I would assume the price has something to do with it too GAC 800 can be very costly if used alone.
@HeyRaeSunnyDay
@HeyRaeSunnyDay 2 жыл бұрын
@@joeycasey2323 Good point! Plus I've learned (the hard way) that a little goes along way to achieve certain results. My new ratio is 70/20/10 Floetrol/PVA Glue/GAC800. The GAC adds gloss but also dramatically reduces those little pockmarks/bubbles. On the other hand it cuts down on cells and makes the paint thin. It's a constant on-going experiement to get the results you want. GOOD LUCK!

Hello Joy! The GAC500 makes your paint stay wet for longer so you have more "open" time to work. The GAC800 adds gloss and strenghthens your paints (helps pigment bonds stay together without changing the colors) so that the paints do not crack as they dry. xoxo Angela
