So many things went wrong in this video, but its a great learning experience LOL! Old resin gets air trapped in it and it starts to bubble and foam up AND I pulled the casting too early!

Old resin shouldn't be used in production casting. However, to get a little more life out of my old resin, I put it in my vacuum chamber. Vacuum each part before mixing for better results.

Hi. You can order off eBay. Small disposable funnels. Helps alot. For air bubbles. A pressure chamber will remove them.

I've been told if you leave the resin out uncovered it sucks up moisture and will cause the same dramas. Keep the lids on tight always and only open just before mixing

I have a question.. I can't seem to find the answer anywhere online.. I have been using smooth on's smooth cast 300 (fast setting) and for a while now the A side lid is extremely difficult to open, and when I do I see crystals built up around the rim. also I noticed some creeping out the lid. moody of the time I can still cast but least thing I cast never dried on the surface. do you know what this is? I assume the chemicals are separating and the part A is not chemically correct anymore. (probably òld I know..)

Ok! So I have experienced all of what you have told me and this is what I do! The crystals forming on side “A” is the resin getting air inside the container and drying out which is making the lid VERY difficult to open. The habit I have gotten into is every time I use my resins, I wipe the excess resin that leaks down the bottle and around the rim with a clean paper towel-one paper towel for side A and a clean one for side B (that way there is no way the chemicals can mix and fire off) This has helped me with the crystals. The resin that has the surface that doesn’t dry is also know as leeching which the most common reason this happens is the resins haven’t been mixed well enough. I always pour the two sides together and stirs like crazy to really make sure they are mixed and then pour the resin into a second cup and with a NEW stir stick, mix it again. Leeching is a painus in the anus, but I have found that if does happen, I take a clean paper towel and apply 99% rubbing alcohol and then hit the areas that are leeching-I give it a good gentle scrub and let it dry out. That should get rid of the leeching spots-if not, try it again. I know this is a LOT of info so thank you for hanging in there with me!

Use computer air duster to hit the top of all your resin buckets and containers before you put the tops back on them. The R134a that's in them is much heavier then air and will displace the air and moisture. This will help your resins performance as it ages. You have to replace the gas blanket every time you pull any product though.

Instead of throwing it out, I use expired resin for non-casting duties such as coating over mother molds and other uses that don’t require bubble-free detail. Considering how expensive it is, might as well use it for something.

great video! an idea, maybe write resin weights onto each mold? .. i have a tin of unopened polyester resin, but had it for about 5 years.. not sure what it'll be like to use now?
@Tobywaynestudios
@Tobywaynestudios 7 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea Micky and I did think of that as I was talking about writing the weights down in my book but sadly, nothing sticks to silicone and that includes permanent sharpie! That stuff just wipes right off! That's a great idea though-now I just have to be consistent with writing my info in ONE book (sadly, I have two books and I lost the one that had all the Deadpool weights😔)

Toby Wayne Studios Maybe engrave or cut out the weight numbers into the silicone, along the flat top edge. Brand that sucker into that silicone! LOL! I can’t stand watching other youtubers wasting epoxy. It hurts my soul... lol 🙃😉😌

Thats a great idea but sadly, the sharpie wont stick to the silicone:( It just wipes right off but I do have my book that I finally found and Im thinking of doing a digital copy of all my notes and putting it on an external hard drive for safe keeping!

Does the baby powder create any clarity problems when you're casting a transparent resin?
@Tobywaynestudios
@Tobywaynestudios 7 жыл бұрын
To be honest Scorchie, I've never used a transparent resin-I'd love to, just have yet to get my hands on some but I will say, I don't think it would interfere as it's such a light coat of powder. Now if you poured the powder in and left huge amounts of powder in all the little detail, then you might have an issue-excellent question btw!

Give it a whirl and see what it does Scorchie! I'm curious to see how it goes! I need to get some translucent resin-I do a lot of slush casts so I'm curious to see how that would effect the look the the resin if I added a flesh tone?
@ScorchieCritter
@ScorchieCritter 7 жыл бұрын
I tried it as an experiment on a small one-piece mold I have, and while the part did release easier, it gave the piece a slightly matte finish and it seems to be less clear. Not ideal for casting crystal-clear gems, but not enough to be overly noticeable if I was mixing in translucent dyes or glitter. I've never slush cast, so I'm not sure how that'd look.

No respirator needed?
@Tobywaynestudios
@Tobywaynestudios 7 жыл бұрын
Hey nixland! I really only use a respirator when I am grinding the resin that has kicked off-I don't go out of my way to inhale large breaths of the resin odor, so I think it's ok to not use a respirator-just my thought:)

@Tobywaynestudios

That's a great question that I should have been more specific with The Atari Creep-I have had that resin open for 10-12 months which is way longer than its shelf life once opened which I believe is 6 months-

I just cast some ploy filled urethane resin that was easily 16 months past date that I had used prior. I had stored them with a gas blanket and inside in air conditioned areas. Needed straining for the polyfill but otherwise just a slight amount of extra foaming.
