This is part 28 in my series of loft conversion videos where I take you the viewer through my entire DIY loft conversion. In this video I fit the overboard PIR insulation, over the rafter insulation I installed in the previous video. I show you what I use to fix the board, how I fix the board and have a general rant about my dislike for fitting insulation!

Wow, I Identified with this so much as I am renovating my cellar. (Year long project, and before furlough fitting it around a 40-50h job as well.... What weekends, what friends? ) The bits you enjoy get done well and are so satifying... The bits you hate (for me its plastering and smoothing down the walls) you end up doing only a few hours and spend most of it moaning and complaining about every little bit... We've ALL been there. The I in DIY never feels so bad when you are on the annoying jobs I didn't take videos I took maybe 700pictures instead but i can see just from scanning through the 12h days and so much progress and then... A picture which looks identical to the week prior. That said. I enjoyed the insulation part of my build. Went from damp walls, tanked and battoned, and it was only once the insulation was fitted i could see the shape and feel of the room. Ofc I had to redo a fair chunk as I completely revised my plan then... At least electrics were easy :) Great to see some progress, and whilst you personally hated it. It allowed me as the viewer to visulise the space so much more :)

I don't really hate it, it's just some jobs are less satisfying, messy and would be easier with some help. When you're busy with work, family and it's cold and wet, sometimes in the moment you wish it was finished. When it's done, you look back and think, I'd probably do it all over again! The loft has been pretty much finished for a long time now I'm just behind on editing the videos. Sounds like you've done a fair bit. Best of luck with your projects and thanks for watching.

PIR insulation. Think you said it all! Hate the stuff. The dust though is quite an irritant so I’d wear a mask. Also for small boards like that I use a snap off blade rather than a saw. Makes 95% less mess and cleaner cuts.

Great video and very inspiring. Our loft conversion was done in line with building regs 23 years ago and the insulation is terrible compared to new standards. Watching your videos and reading your replies to questions has given me the confidence to re insulate myself. Just had our roof done with breathable membrane, soffit vents and vented ridge tile, so good ventilation. Following the advice in your video I’m going to remove the old plasterboard and insulation, then replace with 100mm insulation board between the rafters and 20 or 30mm insulation board over. One question... are the screws / washers used to secure the insulation board galvanised or just standard steel? Cheers 👍
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dale, the screws are just drywall screws and the washers were stainless steel, on a few quid in screwfix. You can buy proper plastic fixings for insulation board but they are more expensive. Just make sure you leave a minimum of 25mm air gap between the insulation board and roof membrane. I don't even need to use the radiator in my loft now even through snow and ice. The insulation does make a huge difference. Best of luck with it!

Thanks for your video, one of the most comprehensive videos I've found on isolating your roof with PIR. I've one question and couldn't find it in the existing comments: not talking about building regs (I'm dutch), is it really required to place the second PIR layer on top of the PIR layer between the rafters? My idea was(1) pir isolation between rigs, (2) vapor permeable foil (3) 20mm ventilation layer/wooden grid work for drywalling (4) drywall. Do you think this will work properly?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it will work and was the case in the UK years ago, but building regs here mean you have to cover the timbers with insulation to stop any thermal bridging. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching.

Can you use no nails glue? Then the plasterboards will be screwed over them? One other question.. I’m thinking of using just 10mm xps insulation (rather than pir) for under boarding. Between the joists, I have 120mm pir. Will that do? Looks like you’re using 50mm pir, that’s quite pricey.

It depends what you're doing. If it's through a building control application for a habital room then the building inspector will tell you whats required for your house. If it's just for loft storage then you can use what you like in reality as long as it's fitted correctly.
@rosswilliams7309

Hi mate quick question regarding the ventilation. did you leave 50mm at the ridge to pass over to the otherside of the loft or did you put a ridge vent in?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
I use fascia vents along the fascias, fully breathable membrane with air gap to ridge. I didn't use ridge vents due to pitch and size of roof as ventilation was adequate, however check you do the right solution for your roof as it does vary. You may be required to use ridge vents by local building control or dictated by British standards. Best of luck.

Surely all that expanding foam and taping is completely negated by the massive holes for the lightening??
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 4 жыл бұрын
Well the light's have to go somewhere. They fit tightly to the plasterboard and you can buy sealed units. Fire rated downlights actually have a seal that will stop the air flow if fitted properly. But there are a lot of conflicts between different building regs. For example insulation is required, but then electrical cables need to stay cool. A compromise has to be met somewhere and for me it makes sense to put safety first. Hope that helps.

Currently in middle of this - got a few questions if you can help. I'm wanting downlighters, its a 24ft room - is there any point with all those holes? Also would the electric cables for the spots be ok going behind the PIR thats between the rafters and then pulling them through? Will be connecting the spotlights to existing old red and black wiring.

Hiya. Good job going on there. I am literally doing my loft fit out now (end of a self build I've done over 4 years). Is it ok to fix plasterboard over the 20mm thick cross-rafter insulation? What is your experience with doing this? Advice much appreciated.
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
Yes of course. That's standard practice. You want a screw long enough to pass through plasterboard (12mm), insulation(20mm) and penetrate timber at least 25mm so a 60 to 70mm dry wall screw should do it for your scenario. Best of luck with it.

It's not plasterboard, it's plywood. I isulated down to the wall plate between and under the rafters (2 layers of PIR insulation board) then plywood over tip in cupboard space, so no foil back needed in this situation. I did this as I wanted warm usable cupboard space. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

What thickness insulation have you used between the rafters and over the top?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
If you're doing it to building regs just check with them first as they will dictate what needs to be used. 100mm between and 30mm over is standard for loft conversion on old house. Newer house may require more to meet regs. If you're not doing it to regs you can use what you like really, just make sure to leave an air gap above the insulation. I left a 25mm air gap, used breathable felt and used fascia vents to provide the airflow. Again this is all a way of achieving the regs. Hope that helps.
