The Impact of Poverty in Healthcare Explained.
The Federal Poverty Level is an income less than $12,760 for individuals and less than $26,200 for a family of four.
People living in poor neighborhoods in New Orleans have a 25 year lower life expectancy than those living in non-poor suburbs. In Kansas City, it's a 14 year difference.
People living in poverty have a 22% higher rate of hospitalization.
Poor people tend to have lower levels of education with 35% having only a high school diploma and 28% having no high school diploma.
Many of the poor work. There are 3 million working poor with full-time jobs.
Low literacy is a problem for the poor and many Americans... 54% of all US adults have a less than 6th grade reading level. 46% of US adults cannot read their prescription labels.
Poor people also have more difficulty with transportation... 1/4 of the poor do not have a car and the distances they travel are about half that of the non-poor in cities like Atlanta and Los Angeles.
However, there are ways of helping the poor in their healthcare. Communication needs to be through speaking and listening... not the written word. 1) Navigation services must be over the phone, not printed/text material. 2) Primary Care Doctor Visits and the Workplace are great locations for in person communication.

Thank you for caring enough to speak about this. Thank GOD for doctors who still care. As a nurse, it’s sooo painful to see people who are the working poor who purchase insurance but still can’t get medication and other health needs met because of copays, transportation barriers etc. I’ve done a lot of case management and still see insurance failing these people. So refreshing to see someone in healthcare trying to better care for people ❤

JBS from Perrysburg, Ohio.....As a solution, we need to find out the root cause. I believe 'lack of education' is one of the root causes. I think we need to recruit a lot of 'good teachers' who can impart education to the children living in poverty for free. These teachers should teach basic English, and Math to these poor children so that they can go to college, and get education, job and so on and so forth. Beyond the formal education, these teachers or mentors should educate these children with a few life skills like how to stay sober, how to live steady life. We need to 'nip it (the poverty issue) in the bud' by following the above-mentioned strategies. Thank you so much Sir for sharing this video.

As one of the Core Developers of Molina in California then across America. I can assure you have just scratched the surface of the problems with our State’s Medicaid system. The #1 problem is lack of access to basic health care services. Millions of Americans WITH Medicaid Managed Care Plans are neglected to the point that they have these “benefits” for years and years yet have never had a PE. This is at the root of all the other problems such as overcrowded Emergency Rooms and misuse of Emergency Response Services

I have with allergy when I eat meat and rice and my hand and feet become more allergic and swelled when I do some type of labour work. WHY?

This entire commentary invites political discourse. There are social & political determinants of health AND poverty. We can't talk about poverty if we aren't also talking about implicit & explicit bias and access to AND misappropriated resources. The problem is systemic.
