Child welfare systems in the United States too often treat poverty as the basis for charges of neglect and decisions to remove children from their parents. The system’s disproportionate impact on Black and Indigenous families and people living in poverty, and the sheer number of children removed unjustly, make this a national crisis warranting immediate attention and action.
Conditions of poverty, such as a family’s struggle to pay rent or maintain housing, are misconstrued as neglect, and interpreted as evidence of an inability and lack of fitness to parent. We found significant racial and socioeconomic disparities in child welfare involvement. Black children are almost twice as likely to experience investigations as white children and more likely to be separated from their families.

what many severely sick in the head and very dangerous so called normal people did to me and many others is one thousand times worse your lucky u was only beat up the severely sick in the head and very dangerous so called normal people caused me severe harm which makes me suffer severely for the rest of my life what they did to me is alot worse then murder they caused me severe harm when i was 15 years old

This is very biased. This individual case may be true, but I feel that most social workers do their jobs. I would like to see the other side of this. Children who are removed because of their parents drug use.

Stop paying Foster parents who, 70 percent of them, don't give a damn about those children, like, start trying to eliminate the need for them, and instead, put a budget for helping single mothers (for example)who involuntary lost job or hours, and help the people who are trying to help themselves! Not everyone has free section 8, some people have to work. Give them grants to learn a trade with a community college, and or a certification, and eliminate each barrier and watch what happens. People who owe child support, people who work but are affected by covid, people with limited education beyond high school, and who work,nonetheless, deserve a break! Don't get us wrong, we appreciate food stamps, and medicaid. It has dramatically improved some lives, for sure, but we need to move up and out of poverty.

I lived in extreme poverty in the beginning of my life. The issue is that many of the people having kids were horribly traumatized from their own upbringing and shouldn’t have kids until their own issues were resolved. Money had nothing to do with it. If the government helped more it would still be a few generations before people would be mentally able to give their all to child rearing. My mothers neighbor drowned her child in ice water, more money wouldn’t have helped. Foster parents with a good background are more equipped to care for children.

The problem starts with other people. Anyone and I mean anyone can call cps on you and make up any lie they want to spit out their mouth and you have a cps worker knocking on your door. That's the first problem!!!!

Govt is spending money to take away and provide basic living to the children, why not give the money directly to the parents for their child food cost, provide school education and free registration child health care to their parents and benefits parents can continue to be near their child and at the same time able to provide care for their child. No policies should separate a child from their parents with the excuse of poverty

It’s not the poverty that’s the issue it’s the trauma from their own childhood causing them to harm their own children. More money wouldn’t make parents stop beating their kids, this coming from someone who saw it first hand in an extremely impoverished neighborhood.

If the government gave the families the money they give to foster parents, the parents might be able to make ends meet. But we are a society that says we value families, but are very tightfisted when it comes to financial support. It is the dreaded word "welfare".

If you can't afford to raise children then stop having them. I was forced (raped) into having a child and later he didn't pay his child support, nor was I given government assistance (welfare). I got off my rear and worked many years and hours to fully support my daughter. If I could do it... Then others should also without my $$$ to help them.

It's not just poor families. They tear them away from grandparents. CPS needs to be abolished. Tell me how a 5 minute investigation tells you what is best for the children. Families spend thousands of dollars trying to get the kids back and they are shut out. They falsify drug tests and are very underhanded. Too much funding that's why no one does anything about it. I'd hate to be them.on Judgement Day. They hurt more than they help.

Reunification with the abusive parents isn’t the answer. Good non bio parents are better than bad bio parents. Blood means nothing when abuse is involved

What you don't understand is that the Court is corrupt. If they don't take the kids they get no money. They are 7 to 8 more likely to get abused in Foster Care. It's all about the money Research it!

yes, but you are not hearing what is being said. in 2019, nearly 8 million children were subjects of suspected maltreatment reports. OVER 50% of these reports did not end up warranting an investigation. and yet that same year almost 3.5 million children WERE subjected to investigations with MORE than 80% of those being found unsubstantiated. these investigations involve interrogation and complete strip searches of VERY young children and a LARGE majority of them are found to be completely unnecessary. we NEED to fix this. this is traumatic for these young kids.

However, I don't see questions and "strip searches" which I believe you are referring to a medical analysis done by a doctor as traumatizing as actual abuse. If there is a question of possible abuse then it should be investigated. There is too much risk. I've heard of children suffering their whole life from childhood abuse but never from being asked questions or being examined by a doctor.

@@monal83022 If your 'open" to what is being said. Then YOU just NEED to be more than willing to 'open' your browsers search engine to 'verify' the findings! As for 'questions' and 'strip searches' conducted to a child with or without parental consent. That alone in itself is traumatizing and even to adults Ms. Lisa! The definition to 'traumatizing', is where one is subjected to shock as a result of an emotionally disturbing experience or physical injury'. Caused by, and is actually.....ABUSE! To which neither the 'questioning' or 'strip search' is done by a medical professional as you stated clearly THINKING you KNOW. Whether it is through an investigation by our departments or law enforcements. Due to our 4th Constitutional Amendment where we are protected from unreasonable searches and seizures. The ONLY laws stipulating a 'strip search' to be allowed or is when one is detained for incarceration and a POLICE OFFICER believes the person has a weapon or contraband on them. And ONLY by the same sex may it be conducted before and after arrival to correctional facilities. The only authorized and LEGAL official allowed to do 'strip searches' of a child is Law Enforcement of same sex to the child with their supervisor or another legal official of same sex as well but in a private, not common area. Now, IF a medical professional is involved to view a child without clothing attire, it is related to sexual assault to where they need to perform a "Rape Kit Exam" on the victim claiming sexual abuse. I do agree however, with you in regards to investigating possible abuse. On ALL parties, including the investigator doing the investigation, the Department of Children and Families they work for, the foster parents, the mental behavioral facilities, and organizations, and affiliated 'local based' so called non-profit organizations with hundreds of THOUSANDS of possible abuse. Not to mention accomplice of children's murders. Before you doubt or request proof.... Again go to the DCF website! The hundreds of DEATHS that occur due to abuse in the system every year for the past 3 years is SICKENING. The parents whom the state rips the kids from, are based on false allegations or falsified evidence, parents and children being coerced, unlawfully taken into state custody and then actually abused MORE than they were at home, all without DUE PROCESS which is our CIVIL RIGHT! The States system to help children and families, are NOT helping when they are breaking our Constitutional Rights, Civil Rights, Children's Rights, and Human Right's and Federal Laws by making their own from the first knock on your door! Targeting the poverty class and single parents. Because we're easier and can not afford to legally fight back or made to believe WE CAN! Have you been diagnosed with any mental disorders, ever take meds for them and have kids? How about smoking, or do you even have the occasional drink of wine/beer? If so, you'll be next! And that is all they need, the rest are ALLEGATIONS, and unproven. This disease we think is in place to actually help our children DON'T! In the system or not! REFORM is due! I pray you are not one to sit down and let our children take it. If you're so open then STAND UP!

Don't give money to people with drug addictions. No money will go to the child. If you want to keep the family together get treatment for the addiction under court order.

This is awful!! Yet all the kids that really need help don't get it!! Btw- if you can't take a drug screen- you should have Dr notes. If you can't get them- it was already explained to you that you will lose your kids. Those drug screens are VERY SENSITIVE. You can't fake your way through it.

I can comprehend if the parents are on drugs that yes it is justified because the child safety is in danger. However, the system through money to investigate and seperate families. However, invest in finding better solutions i.e., counseling for parents who are depressed, rehab classes and education, poverty better job opportunities. So, parents can be whole and provide their children better. 🙄 😮

The one mom, her house wasn’t in a condition to raise children and she was putting off for child health appointments. Children cannot speak for themselves in their often ignored simply for being born After their parents . we’re tired of seeing feed the children videos we’re tired of seeing babies abandon in a trashcan we’re tired of seeing Children being bullied because they have to wear dirty clothes to school because their parents don’t give a damn

But people don’t think about these things often and they don’t realize that financially stable people rarely get their children taken. Oh, the stories I could share. I was in foster care and worked in a paraprofessional capacity for an LSW contractor agency for WVA DCFS and dealt with my parental rights being terminated. I could share some true insanity from all ends of the spectrum in this industry, which it truly is an industry that makes children a financial commodity. There are financial incentives to keep children from their biological parents/family and instead motivates them to terminate parental rights and adopt out to perspective adoptive families or people.

The US has become 70% dependent on consumer spending alone to drive its economy. No longer employed in full-time jobs , w/ benefits, workers get caught between declining purchasing power and soring health care costs. Many workers additionally suffer under a global 'wage race to the bottom' as corporations seek the low cost supplier (wherever they may be off shore). You would have to return to the England of Charles Dickens to find greater income spreads than exist in the US currently.

I hate that the single mom will be charged but not the dad. They investigate the mom but not the dad. If the father is abusive and the mother calls cps nothing is done. He gets joint custody even if he does and sells drugs like meth, heroin. If you have your baby in a hospital or file a birth certificate they are owned by the government. Family courts are sick. Best thing you can do is pack up what you can and go camping in the woods until your kids are older.

I have worked in foster care homes and have been certified by CPS for my training. The foster care private homes that I had worked in were excellent. The cps workers were great, the foster care mom loved the children, and me and the other staff worker gave our all to these children. Many of the children the parents were on drugs, alcohol, no food in house, no clothes, etc... Their stay in the homes were far better than their stay with their own parents. I was a single mother of one child working 3-4 low income jobs just to survive without government assistance because I was told that they would not give my race any help. Once I had some parent call cps on me because my daughter would spend the night at a friend's house while I was working overnight. My home was clean, food stocked, I don't do drugs nor smoke /alcohol, the case worker questioned me, looked around my house, talked to my employers, talked to school officials, and talked to my daughter... She closed the case because I was a great parent. They are hard on people because they are doing their job.

If u cant support a child, u shouldnt have one. Tne reason y people r on welfare, is msinly because of lack of education. There is too much government dependency. . If only middle class women had kids we would have even less babies a year then we do now. Did you know that middle class is a person that makes 52k to 150k, which only 18 percent of the nation.There is also the issue of not every women is capable of physical having children. Today we have to many people who get to nosey in others business. Medical marijwana in many that is just fine. If the father has only been caught once with drugs just get him help do not right him off a deadbeat person. say her family makes about 40,000 That is barely enough for one person to live on in my area.

How hard is it to comprehend especially after watching this that maybe you should establish yourself before not even having your first child, but may be before your second third fourth fifth child. if you’re having to go to food banks and beg for handouts, then why would you continue to get pregnant? It just screams, entitlement, selfishness, and possible mental illness. Who cares if you’re traumatized, you create the situation. Kind of parents who don’t want to do anything above the very bare minimum they will scream I close you I feed you you should be happy just so that they don’t have to get out of their comfort zone. Like the couple in the beginning, there’s a reason why they both got that same big, build slow moving body …because they have no motivation. No drive

If you had a DVD of one of these peoples lives that claim that they just can’t afford it.. a DVD of their entire life… and if you watch that DVD in reverse, don’t you think that you’d be able to hit pause in just a few minutes and say right there you could’ve done that different but you didn’t you chose to get your nails done at the flea market you bought beer and cigarettes you got $200 pair of tennis shoes when you can’t make your rent payment… you got drunk on Sunday night and called in sick for the fifth time in a row and got fired and then blamed it on the boss?… You kept being late for work you didn’t do your job as good as the guy right beside of you. You stayed on the phone you played with your phone. You didn’t do your job then you got fired and claimed racism.!! I don’t believe for a second that 90% of the people in poverty have done everything they could possibly do to get themselves out of poverty, and they just couldn’t do it … I know it to be true,, and now you know it… and I’m not guessing.. I have been there and worked my way out of it with no help so it is possible don’t lie to yourself and other people

Apple - That's naive to assume that. The reasons are far more complex. Using separation tactics to further isolate and traumatize children and parents only increases the growth of long term mental illnesses in communities. Money should be shifted into creating holistic, trauma informed parenting education that involves the entire family unit so that families can stay intact and develop healthy relationship dynamics, healthy coping skills, and financial knowledge.

Apartments owners raised their cost by 50% to over $1200.00 a month...They tossed out half and filled the country of homeless people who got expelled from their homes. APOCALYPTIC END OF THE WORLD....THIS THE SAME EVERYWHERE!

teh way the working poor were treated in teh past was bad enough now what the government did raising all the prices and making many working poor homeless much more then before and causing many working poor to commit crimes by forcing them into severe poverty i thank god i live off the government i thank god i am not the working poor they way they get treated and severely under paid

I received an email about this comment, possibly going against community guidelines. So allow me to rephrase my initial comment.... people who claim they did nothing wrong or they took my children for no reason but casually admit to getting high on marijuana or any drug, for that matter, are in need of a lot more help than with poverty.
