Wow never seen anything like this on Video before reminds me of childhood looking for bugs I didn't particularly like bugs tbh they made me shiver haha much prefer my fish but what a great video I'm going to show my kids see what they think 😎 keep up the good work.

I remember how they turned into balls when I touched them in childhood , but they were grey

I got some of these powder orange isopods for my granddaughter but there are a lot of Blues mixed in with them. If we keep them together will we end up with a blue colony because I'm thinking that the blue may be a more dominant gene than the orange. I told her I would try to find out and if that's the case we will start the complicated task of separating them into two separate tubs

I got grey isopods I got from my backyard (western new york area). they are always buried in the little bit of dirt I have in the container ... it's fall here and I usually keep the house cool in winter (65-70). are they hibernating? do they even hibernate? should I consider a different type that is more active? any thoughts on this offhandedly?

There are a lot of possibilities here...some species burrow nearly all the time, many are most active at night, and many will also burrow when it is too dry for them. At those temperatures, most species collected locally can be active at those temperatures. Isopod activity also relates to population. If you have small numbers, they are not going to be as visible an active as when you have large numbers. If you would like to see a lot of activity, I would suggest a more day-active type like Porcellionides pruinosus or Porcellio laevis ‘Dairy Cow.’

Do soil centipedes eat isopods? How about soil mites? I caught a few and set them loose upon my powder orange enclosure, and I haven't seen much of the mites.

Does the substrate for Orange isopdes have to be dry or a bit moist? Also hown aggressive are they & can they be housed with ivory millipdes?

Hey Rus, i’m wondering, ive kept powder blue for a few months now, and lately ive been seeing some orange looking fellas, are they considered powder orange? Will the mutation revert back to blue? Thanks.

If they look true orange, and not just a slight orange tinge to the wild type, they may well be powder orange. It is recessive, so if you isolate and select for a few generations you could get a true-breeding orange population. If kept with the blues, you may get a few oranges that pop up here and there, but they will likely remain at low densities because there will be so many copies of the dominant wild type allele in the population .

@@Aquarimax wow thanks for answering so fast! Some looks to be true orange but others are just slightly. I watched your video about breeding and you stated that females can carry sperm for a while and isopods start being reproductive at a 1/3 of their lifespan, so im guessing I'll require some patience, extra keen eye, and luck to have success in isolating that gene huh? 😅

Ryan Brown You’ll love them! They are hardy and prolific, though they seem to do better in enclosures with more ventilation than dart frog vivaria.

They should actually work for the birch too, I'm 100% sure, but I'm not sure about the maple, my dubia cockroaches eat them, my Porcellio scabers eat them too, and I don't know about the Porcellio laevis, because I haven't had them for very long.
