A quick power kiting trip to the park in really gusty/strong wind. I was flying my Prism Tantrum 250 Dual-line Parafoil Kite with Control Bar that's available on Amazon at www.amazon.com...

Great! So fun! When I fly alone, I’ve been taking a card table with me and turning it on its side having a nice surface to rest the kite in starting position seems to have worked pretty effectively. I just tried flying the tantrum the other day the wind was very blustery so looking forward to our consistent wind.

I made weighted blocks out of basswood and put some lead weights in them so I can put them on the trailing edge of my 2-line kites. It works for up to 30mph winds. Then it gets to be too windy. But above 10mph you can launch the tantrum by pulling on the left line to where the bar is parallel to the left line and then firmly tug on the right line using the leash. This will pop open the kite and it will launch. This works every time except for if the sail is twisted on itself more than once. For low winds, you can lay the kite down to look like an L. The top quarter to 3rd of the sail will point up to the sky while the other portion will stay flat on the ground. This will keep it partially inflated but won’t fly away.

Ray Playcoin the tantrum 250 was my second parafoil kite. It’s a very fun kite to fly. I weigh 155-160 and it drags me around and picks me up. Although, the size of the sail isn’t quite big enough to slow the decent. So I land hard on my feet. I use the tensor 3.1 for jumping and whatnot. This kite is really fun in the 25-35mph range. Just be sure you aren’t close to the weight of the line strength because that is a costly and potentially dangerous mistake. I wish you safe kiting.

Nice video.. looks fun! Just ordered this one as my first parafoil kite. Can’t wait to test it out!! Also I have a Zenith 5 I took out today for the first time. Was fun but I want some more handling, and fight the wind .

With the amount of power this kite has, do you think I could use it to Snowboard over a frozen lake on a windy day?

Haha, if it's 20+ mph, yes. Good idea... 😄

I have this kit, and got tossed about by it today on the beach in similar wind. @Adam Carson (or anyone) Do you have any tips on how to get it to do loops and self relaunch for high winds? I kept finding after landing (actually crashing) it would be flipped upside down and have a twist in the line. I know if I could loop in air I might be able to correct the flipped lines. But once the kite logo is upside it's really hard to relaunch solo.

I'm curious about the same. As for the loops in high wind I start as high as I can, but when it's fierce I usually can't get more than one or two in a row. And as for recovering on the ground, mine always flips upside down too. I usually ignore the crossed lines, jerk the lines when there's decent wind over the kit and then lift it up the moment it rotates and untangle it with reverse loops in the air. Sometimes having the control bar cocked all the way to the right or left when it's on the ground can also help the wind lift up a side and get it to role, and then you yank it up the moment before it's right side up again.

I am also like you thinking should I go for tantrum 250 or Synapse 200cm? Which one you recommend ?

Is it powerfully because I want to know if it can lift you off the ground

Yeah, but not for paragliding. 😜 I'm currently 225 lbs and it can easily drag me across the ground if I angle it low. As far as getting airborne, I'm sure it can, but unless you're in the context of surfing, you can't get it high long enough to really stay in the air. Occasionally I'll shoot it straight up and jump with it for a longer jump.

Bejamino G it’s a pretty good kite. I weigh 155-160lbs. The tantrum 250 was my second parafoil kite. It pulls pretty well. You can do jumping with it but it doesn’t slow the decent. So you will land pretty hard on your feet. If you are ballsy enough, it’s really fun in the 25-35mph range. Just be sure you aren’t close to the weight of the line strength. Otherwise, the lines will snap. And likely snap the bridles as well. This can be a costly and dangerous mistake.

Great kite when it stays in the air but mine keeps crashing. Any advice?

There's several possibilities. Sometimes it's as simple as being in a location that has a bunch of trees or buildings around it that give you extremely unstable and inconsistent wind including wind direction. It could be that some of the lines are tangled. Those are the two most likely from my experience. Sometimes wind that's gusty can pull the kite to the side and down even if the control bar is close to parallel. As long as the lines are the same length, other than those things, maybe just more times in good wind in an open location will help. I recall gusty wind really affecting my ability to know what was going on when I first tried power kiting. Anyway, hope one of those things helps. Cheers.

My kids weighed less than that and they have no problems. There's no way they could do tricks in the wind you saw here. However, they would be able to keep it centered just fine because there's hardly any force at all when you do that. So you'd be good!

Its all about choosing the right flying conditions - take it out in low winds first to get used to the kite, then try in progressively stronger winds until you can identify your limits. Also it can be a good idea to take a friend to help with set up and launch if you're new to kite flying - they can also call for an ambulance if required :)
