Why don't you just invest in a backup generator? It's completely automatic and if installed correctly, you never notice the change. They are powerful enough to run your entire property.

Mike, You are doing what I did for years, putting a band-aid on the power outage problem instead of solving the problem. I live forty miles north of Phoenix,AZ. My power goes out up to nine times a year, mostly in the summer during one of our monsoon storms. Arizona in the summer with no air conditioning, eeeek! I did the generator thing; it sucked- go out in a pounding thunderstorm and start the generator. Finally, seven years ago I had a Kohler 20Kw generator installed. I picked the Kohler over the Generac because the housing on the Kholer was better for keeping packrats out of the unit. Now, thirty seconds after my power goes “poof” my generator automatically powers the house; lights, tv, ac and all. Best household decision I’ve ever made.

Backup Power: Good: 2,000 Watt inverter generator with extension cords Better: 7,500-9,500 Watt duel fuel generator with a transfer switch Best: Battery backed solar power with a "multi-circuit" transfer switch

I’ll bet that you’ll want to find a trustworthy person/family to “check” on your property occasionally. I’m sure there’s times when you’ll want to see for yourself or have that change of pace getaway, still a back plan is quite valuable. Trustworthy is the key!

I hope you get a few good saw logs as you clean up your forest at home. Nature can be destructive at times. Have you been keeping up w Yellowstone Park? Big crack just happened a few days ago. In Indiana we had an ice storm that took power out for 7 days. My brother called a store and reserved their last 3 generators that he asked me to go get. Long drive under really bad conditions. He and his father in law kept the 2 5000 watt generators. I ended up with the 3500 watt Coleman. I found out after 6 days it was not enough to run 1 upright freezer. Returned it and got my money back. I was tempted by the Stihl saw but I did not want another battery platform. I bought the 12 volt 6 inch Milwaukee chain saw. i really like it. Now they have an 18 volt 8 inch.
@dennisgrandy3075

Sounds like a defective generator. A 3500 watt generator should be putting out about 29 amps of 120v power, more than enough to run a household size freezer.

Mike, that Honda is a great generator. I’ve used one for many years when camping and to keep the freezer and refrigerator going when power goes out….BUT, I live in a somewhat rural area like you and I’m in Michigan, 500 miles north of you. I invested in a natural gas whole house generator. 11000 kw is plenty to start my furnace and run my well pump along with lights, washer, dryer, hot water heater, etc. It was not cheap but I have zero regrets. I highly recommend one. Thank you for so many years of bringing us along with you and your family. 🇺🇸

Love the portability of the Honda. That said IMO you need a whole home system. Home Depot right now has the Guardian 16,000-Watt Air-Cooled Whole House Generator with Wi-Fi and 200-Amp Transfer Switch LP version for $4247 plus installation. Because you said you do not have NG or LP you would have to spend the $$$ for a LP tank but these units are "Outstanding". About 15 seconds after the power goes out these fire up and the whole home os powered. For a few hundred dollars more you can go to a 18,000-Watt. We installed a 20Kw 8 years ago....one of the best investments we have ever made.

A good way to keep track of where you put your cameras is to use a hand held GPS. Simply set a waypoint at each camera location and you will be able to walk straight to them from anywhere in the woods and you won't be attracting the attention of trail cam thieves with orange marking tape. I have used a GPS to find property line markers just by using the angle and distance coordinates from the property survey description.

Those Honda suitcase generators are very handy. Always a great starting and running unit. They make a external tank that extends run time to 12hrs and full power. I recommend a propane generac for the cabin that charges a battery bank with inverter. That’s how I run my off grib cabin. The generator charges my batteries in 2 hours of run time.

Hi Mike, been watching your channel since the beginning while living in CA. We moved to a small town in southeastern Texas three years ago and bought 16 acres' of land and built our barndo and barn. We are semi off grid, with water well and propane, grid power for now will do solar in a couple of years. Since we are out in the country and experienced the deep freeze in 2021 we decided to install a 24K Generic generator running off a 500 gallon propane tank, plenty of power for a 200amp service.

Those portable generators are great fo on the go demands and a small camp situation and emergency short term for home freezer and refrigerator set up. I really liked mine for taking to a part of the property to use the electrical tools to do any building or repairs. I have a whole-house natural gas generator that auto-starts after 30 seconds and then a power transfer switch automatically switches the house over to the generator. When grid power comes back on, then the process switches back to normal grid power without loss of power to the house. Whole system cost about $7,000 approximately 10-12 years ago.

Solar is worth considering. I know you have trees, but you're in the lumber and firwood business. Take a few out and put a few panels up, or just a few on the roof of your cabin. If a 2000 watt generator is going to meet your needs then the solar system you would need is minimal cost, size and effort. I've been powering a whole house and electric cars for 4 years all from solar. Definitely worth looking at.

Just saw your video today for the first time. Honda generators are the best. People always want to compare the cheaper generators to the Hondas and say you can buy 2 for the price of one Honda , which is true but what they do not realize is that their generators of the same size as the 2200i generators have a smaller engine. The predator 2500 and the champion or westing house and pulsar all average between 79cc displacement whereas the the Honda 2200i has a 121cc displacement. That means that on the same size loads there will not be a voltage drop like the other generators will experience. Even the Honda 2000i has a larger engine displacement of 98cc. That is why they cost what they cost. I would still invest in a solar power bank. I know you have shade all year round but Solar Signature has a 3KW off grid inverter and a 5KW battery you can hook up together on a dolly for portability all for around $2300. It will run your fridge and freezer quietly through the night and you can use the Honda to charge the battery through the inverter as it also has a charger and mppt for solar panels too. Your Honda would charge it completely from 0 to 100% in less than 3 hours. You save on gasoline and the Honda does not have to run all night long. Great property you have and sorry for the damage you have. Here in Texas in the coastal area we are always prepared for stuff like that.

The Hondas are nice machines, I have 2 at work and 1 for home. I use ethanol free for storage and if it's an extended outage I'll use regular gas, then drain out the left over and put ethanol free back in. The Hondas can't handle water in the fuel like briggs and champion. When you put in your home standby, go with a Kohler diesel. You won't beat it for reliability and longevity. Stay away from the Generac! They keep me busy as a generator tech.

We lived in WA state for a long time before moving to CO....The power dropped a lot......all the time in fact and these little gen sets worked great.. My son has both of them now (we could pair them for more power) but we cycled what needed to be powered and it was awesome...the pellet stove (NEVER AGAIN) the refrigerator and freezer and TV...

I love my EU 2200. Only suggested improvements for Honda, A tool-less side door and the oil drain ramp leaves little to be desired

How do you hook the Honda up to the house? or do you just run a cord to each freezer then to the Generator.

mike, you have a real nac for reviewing products, reminds me of wranglerstar back in the day. a lot of us are in the market for similar type items and its hard to find reviewers you can't trust. thanks!

As far as your WV property think about a wind turbine for your off grid setup. I use a hybrid setup here in northern New Mexico. Even in heavy snow the wind turbine keeps the battery bank in good condition.
