Saban's Power Rangers rolled into theaters in 2017...mostly to empty theaters. In this video I go over what doesn't work and why the project was misguided from the beginning.

I really disliked this movie from the story to the characters this movie did a lot wrong. The only things that are good are the acting, some of the special effects looked okay, and one action scene was kinda cool. But other than that this movie sucked imo and I grew up with the power rangers:(

The movie was so forgettable, most of it was cliche teen dramas (which will always be bad to me personally), it barely focuses around the power rangers (not the team themselves, just the concept), and don’t get me started on the designs (who designed Goldar?)

If the script, plot, characters and overall world presented in the story isn't done properly then it won't matter if it's a well known brand or a fresh new idea: it will fall apart like a house of cards.

PS The X Files WAS absolutely scary and unnerving in the seasons that were filmed in Vancouver. I remember watching that and many shows in the 90s which were filmed there for it being cheaper and that's also why you saw the same Canadian actors. It simply fit sci fi or any drama. Why the X Files changed where they filmed is a bit odd considering all the advantages?

That's true. Everything these days is just nostalgia and reboots. Nothing new, nothing different, nothing innovative. Plus the costumes were so busy, I couldn't even tell what I was looking at. They clearly didn't want a martial arts fight with the putties, which is why it was just lazy and felt so out of place. And they clearly just wanted the zord fight coz it was just Transformers.

I think this is a big part of the issue. Like Midnight says, this adaption wanted to be taken seriously, so it shot in a super depressing environment with muted color, gave everyone a CW backstory, and made Chronicle meets the Breakfast Club. Power Rangers is bright, colorful, and most often upbeat. I'm not saying it can't be serious, but I'm also not saying it's bad to laugh and smile once in a while.

Dark and serious and power rangers is a combination that is destined to fail. A good power rangers movie would be to take all of the good stuff, the fast paced action, all the cool modes and the transformations and campy and goofy villains, and combine that with some spiderman style drama, like having to balance personal life with hero life while obviously leaving out all the bad stuff. And color full and vibrant environments are a must. Power rangers is not meant to be serious. It was always campy fun and spectacle.

This is a personal feeling but I really hate the over detailed look of both the suits and the Zords. The zords in particular don't really look like something that should fit together to form the Megazord as opposed to the ones in the show where you can see where everything is supposed to fit, like the arms and the legs. Yeah is "toyetic" but it's not like this one was not going to try to sell toys too

Agree. The Megazord doesn't feel at all like combining the zord, it just like a separate 6th bigger zord. Also I don't like the separated cockpit even though it makes more sense in practicality. Having unified cockpit is the symbolism of they are united and together. It's a subtle thing that reinforces the theme. And they spent too much time to enable and disable their visor helmet. Another hollywood thing that want to sell the actors faces by sacrificing the coherency of the movie. We don't need to see the faces to know how the character feeling if you can communicate it with full body language, just like, uhhh, the TV shows. Or if they want to compromise, Iron Man did it best with putting the camera "inside" IronMan helmet to see Tony's face. That way we knew Iron Man never open his mask until the situation is over.

The toy version doesn't even look like the movie version. They had to sell a non-transforming megazord separately from the individual zords to get it screen accurate because there's no clear design elements to show which zord forms what part. The biggest fun about combiners is how the pieces fit together to form a bigger machine. They didn't care about that at all.

Execution was definitely not ideal, but I'd really argue that the movie had the right basic idea of how to modernize/reboot the franchise; make it like The Breakfast Club meets The Avengers. Honestly, were I to reboot Power Rangers, that's pretty much how I would think to do it. So again, I think the execution was lacking, but I'd challenge the notion that the project was misguided from the start, at least insofar as their thinking of "let's combine elements of Breakfast Club and Avengers". Again, I would argue that idea at least is actually a good one.

I think the worst thing they did is make this movie "realistic" like the first iteration of the power rangers involved space wizards and advanced alien tech. Plus I think the MCU works best when they start with the crazy comic book look and work backwards to make it more realistic. The costumes have a realistic take, but they are still recognizable iron man or cap. I feel like power rangers did the opposite, where they looked at the the originals and they came up with their own take on it and then painted power rangers on it. Like the look of the zord and the Rangers and even enemies are so far divorced from the original show it might as well not be power rangers at all. You can't really bank on nostalgia if you change the look of everything.

The biggest problem in my opinion was that it was a Power Ranger film that took a full hour for the first character to get his Power Ranger suit, and 90 minutes before they all actually morphed. It was 90 minutes of boring Teen bonding and 30 minutes of actual Power Ranger action. I had no problem with them going dark and gritty with the story, and I really liked the costume designs. They should should have done all the basic setup for all of the characters over the first 30 minutes, then show them actually bonding as uniformed Rangers in combat over the remaining 90 minutes.

I feel like a lot of issues people did have with the film could’ve been eased with a sequel. The suits could’ve evolved or just grown on people, the ranger combat could’ve gotten more martial arts-y as they have more time to learn, get a more properly seen morph (even just reverse of when Jason demorphed at the end) or zord sequence, and maybe seen the other weapons. The CGI, especially for daylight CGI, was pretty good. Felt like they banked a bit on getting a sequel, and that could be part of why the film feels a bit off in some ways.

What i find very interesting about this Power Rangers movie is that it seems to have developed a fanbase completely separate from that of the IP it was adapting. See, I hang around Power Rangers/Sentai fangroups quite often, and while the tv shows new and old are often discussed, this movie rarely, if ever, comes up. And when it does, it's usually in a dismissive "that happened, better luck next time" kind of way. but Power Rangers 2017 also seemingly has managed to develop quite a strong cult fanbase of people who specifically like this movie, and otherwise don't care about Power Rangers as a franchise. Every few months or so I'll see a tweet or post saying "2017 power rangers was underrated, didn't deserve to flop", and people in the comments will agree and say stuff along the lines of "I never watched the shows, but i really liked this movie/found myself relating to the characters/etc" so yeah, I can't think of any other movie like this where its fanbase is seemingly disconnected from the source material it's based off.

My favorite parts of PR has always been the designs/aesthetic and the fights. Seeing the different suits, zords, weapons, etc. and then seeing them transform and fight is the core of every episode. This movie has awful redesigns, one terrible/forgettable CGI fight near the very end, an ultimately anti-climatic morph sequence, the zords combining was confusing/weird and I think Jason was the only one to get a weapon, which he hardly uses. "They're not great shows" I am sorry but I am gonna have to disagree with this. Have we had Power ranger shows that feel weaker than others? sure. Is this franchise very goofy and campy at times? absolutely. However, I feel like writing off most of Powers Rangers as just silly fun is a disrespectful to this franchise. Over the years especially in some of the best seasons like Time Force, Space, or Dino Thunder, Power Rangers has managed to to fine a fine balance of being goofy and over the top at times yet still manage to tell exciting, fun, and serious stories with very memorable characters that still stick with us to this day. Even early seasons like Mighty Morphin had high stakes and emotional rich moments with characters. Serious situations were taken very seriously and that was very surprising for a kid's show. Power rangers is not perfect but I do think people tend to get too comfy oversimplifying its impact on kid's shows or just oversimplifying it in general. We have for sure had more quality shows over the years than lackluster ones and I feel Linkara and Disney brain perfectly understand/break down why very well. I still enjoyed this video though you brought up some very interesting points about this movie.

Damn. It certainly failed at starting a movie franchise, but I remember LOVING this film! I've always loved how character-driven it was, as the director says, not focusing on the fantastical fights, but more so on the characters and their pretty troubled backstories. It felt raw, and I remember loving that. However, after watching this video I might need to give it a rewatch.

Maybe it’s just me but I do not like the comics. They do what Marvel and DC do when they don’t know what to do with their characters, stick them in the multiverse and make them fight evil versions of themselves. That’s such a small way of using Power Rangers, they don’t need all of that to have a good story. They just need to do the basics right, the Rangers in their regular day life, like a Spider-Man story would do, no Spiderverse needed.

@Raphael Adôrno I gotta ask, how far into the comics did you read? Lord Drakkon and the multiverse are…2 parts? His reveal and first fight from issues 13-16, and then the Shattered Grid arc, which are issues 24-30. The rest are the Rangers trying to struggle either without Zordon, or they are dealing with other problems, outside of Beyond the Grid. Go Go also tackles some other things they dealt with, both pre-Tommy, and later Post Shattered Grid.

As a big power rangers fan when this movie came out, i pestered my friends to go with me and see it, i lost the excitement on the "milking the boy cow" joke, during intermission i wanted to leave and it was my friends told me to give it a chance, the final nail the coffin for me was the fact i could actually count the 10secs of actual power rangers theme music they played...the zord fight at the end didn't help either. Say what you will about the movies made in the 90's but at least they were power rangers movies, this is a coming of age story about 5 misfits and they use the power rangers stuff as a reason for them to be friends, and seems a bit embarrassed by it since you barely see any of it until the last 20mins of the movie...when they rush through it because "oh yea this IS suppose to be a power rangers movie".

Simply saying that it should not have tried to be anything above what it already was with the tv shows is the kind of thinking that keeps franchises from evolving.

I know there is a DIE HARD fan base for this movie (I used to know someone who annoyingly never shut up about it, trying to keep it relevant), but it really took the wrong lessons from YA adaptations, the MCU, and Transformers to try and modernize this franchise that maybe around, but a far cry from it's 90's hey day, and yet, they keep trying to make it happen.

In France there is a film series called OSS 117, which is based off of the novels it gets its name from. It is similar to a French James Bond, but the books came out before the James Bond books. In 2006 the reintroduced the character, but made him a farce of the original character. I love the first movie (the 2 sequels not as much), and I think PowerRangers could easily replicate this and make it funny/a farce of the superhero landscape in an original way. I know there are a lot of these sort of films, but I think Power Rangers has more pull and capability with its established IP

The entire time I was watching this movie I kept saying, "why aren't they playing the theme song?" The music from the show, the theme, the background music, Bulk and Skull's theme, all iconic. All add to, what is otherwise a very cheesy and silly show and legitimize it a little bit. When they finally do play the song, it's for ~10 seconds in the middle of the 3rd act and it's too little too late. This isn't the only problem with the movie... but it's just another example of what they could have done but didn't do to make the movie fun and a little less droll.

Take some stuff from Kamen Rider Kuuga which is a rather serious but very simple tokusatsu hero story. Where people get injured or killed every episode, it relates back to the lives of the characters and factors into their growth of power throughout the story in someway, and by then you'll have a pumping action scene that you really want to see the heroes struggle and win at. Power Rangers needs a composer also that makes memorable music.

I wanted SO BADLY to love this movie. I even convinced myself that it was going to get sequels out the wazoo. Eventually though, I saw it for what it is; a lot of wasted potential. I don't hate it though, and some things about it do really work for me, mainly anything involving their version of Billy. As someone on the spectrum, it was pretty cool seeing him interpreted like that, since many of Billy's tendencies and behaviors in the old show could be viewed that way even though I'm sure that wasn't the show's intention. Plus, Billy was easily the best character in the film, so there's that. The worst parts of this film are both the Megazord design, and Angel Grove being some little nowhere town. The world doesn't seem to be in jeopardy when such a lame and little place is the one being destroyed instead of a major city. They could have used the old stock footage from the original show of buildings blowing up and it would have worked better than what they did. I actually went to the dinky harbor village in British Columbia where they filed the town scenes, and for the record, the Krispy Kreme is actually a drug store. Oh and of course the place is only a few miles away from Lionsgate studios.

While I haven't seen the movie, this seems like a decent review. I'd just say I didn't think the acting in the original series was not wooden. It did as you said know exactly what it was trying to be and the actors followed through with that perfectly. To be honest I don't know what I'd do for a live action rangers movie. The over the acting, cheesiness, over the top nature, humor, action and bright aesthetic (and typically bright tone) was what and the original series so good. There's only so much of that you can tone down before it STOPS BEING POWER RANGERS. Like I want a more adult version of the show but... how do you that without killing what made power rangers so widely loved in the first place? The comic book series (of what I've seen) has been pretty neat but that too had it's flaws. I didn't connect so much with the original team the way they were written - Tommy shouldn't be the only character I really like.

After seeing the suits, I thought it was going to be a dark and gritty mess. The final film ended up having a lot more heart and humor than I was expecting. The humor was great ("I'm black" "No you're not") and it offered a good amount of diversity because even though the original series had racial diversity, this also included characters with mental disorders and of different income levels (the film has a positive reception amongst Asian Americans, as they are most commonly depicted as smart and wealthy whereas this film showed a family of lower income immigrants). I think the biggest criticism, but the reason why I liked it was the limited amount of fan service. It's annoying when I film constantly does things "for the fans" but it ends up being more fan service than telling a good story. It made the ending part with the zords and the theme song all the more exciting than if references to the original show were constantly sprinkled in. It's a shame the movie didn't do well, I would have loved to see what the story involving the green ranger would have been.

I always liked the idea of a more mature power rangers story, considering that the premise is about normal teenagers being thrown in the role of planetary warriors/defenders. There’s gonna be a LOT of baggage with that. I have a soft spot for this movie because of that but it definitely is missing that vibrant SoCal aesthetic to it. If they try to start a franchise again, to avoid MMPR repetition they could do Zeo, with tommy oliver training them as a veteran in the Rangers, part of the MM in the 90s and the only ranger left after Trini was KIA (this moment treated with tons of respect to the og actress) and the rest of the MM rangers leave because they *are* just kids and not soldiers. That could be a neat premise as long as it’s done right imo
