I trained in karate for about 10 years as a kid, till my shou-dan, with a direct lineage from okinawan go ju ryu. It has been 15 years since and I thought I had lost all these original techniques, most of all the pair training and conditioning. This video is a true gem, all of my memories washed over. Very thorough. Seems like it might be possible to resume training without having to relocate to Okinawa after all :)

I've been searching for dojo's near me to start training again. I believe I have the right mindset for it now. However, all I can find around me are these kid-friendly "American Karate" strip mall dojo's. I wish I had Goju-Ryu near me. Videos like this might be my only hope of learning anything legitimate. A true masters class indeed. 16:42 - arm swings (driving blood down the arms into the hands), a critical exercise when doing arm and hand conditioning sessions (as well as stretching and massage). So many forget how critical they are (especially if you want good hands when you're older). Great to see these as part of the warm-up for Goju Ryu.

@@PaulGappyNorris yeah he went 'a little' far in his training but just think what his hands would be like without warmups+cooldowns like I mentioned. Plus, things like the jar lifting helps preserve the hands :) Considering what he has done to them, he can still use his hands well ..just won't make the best piano player! These days Morio has added medicine too (' Dit Da Jow' from Chinese medicine) and other things. imho - you don't need to scare your hands or lose flexibility when you condition (though your hands will become bigger). The 'art' of forging the hands and arms is exactly that. An art, one you need a very specific teacher for. Just hitting things without understanding generally won't end well. :) There have also been reasonably large scientific studies of 'Karate masters' in Japan. Specifically looking at their hands in old age. The lack of arthritis in these practitioners was surprising to the study. And flew against the public opinion of how much hand damage actually occurs. Its all down to how safely the individual decides to train really. Peace.

I don't believe we should compare karate with other methods. Karate and Muay Thai are two different things. Karate has become a sport (sad) but doesn't work in that regard. Most karate has become a sport as you say. There are still styles which practice the old ways though, namely Uechi-Ryu and some schools of Goju-Ryu. Although Higaonna has produced a lot of videos and books I don't think he has become commercial. He still practices and teaches real goju-ryu. I'm glad for the DVDs he has made as it has enabled anyone to get higher level knowledge. I have this video as well as the other ones he made with this company and it is definitely not sport karate.

Tetsuji Nakamura is training with sensei Morio Higaonna 1:09:30 doing Sanchin. Now Tetsuji owns IOGKF and Morio had to create TOGKF. They were friends but not anymore…

Sensei Higaonna gripped my hand.... It is really like being grabbed by a wild animal, his grip is so strong "you can't imagine"! I had elbow pain for months after his simple, yet . destructive grip. I guess he didn't go full force...

Morio shihan..is very strong..but all these old school tools can be replaced with modern ones...like..u can just squat with weight and progress slowly instead of doing all these wierd leg exercises..just my opinion though

You're right about Goju Ryu, but I did train under Shotokan and it was definitely more of a tournament style. Kyokushin, which came partially from Shotokan is the most common style in major tournaments. Also, Karate was made for the warrior class in Okinawa, it wasn't meant solely for defense, but as a warrior fighting style. Also, I'm not hating on your style, I've just always known those styles are well known for being in tournaments.

At least this way i used it for years (Kyokushin) and participated last with 38 years on world tournament in south africa, but i stll allways followed the okinawan arts, now i found my home in Meibukan Goju Ryu. "Its a good exercise" because you have to deal with pain, getting damage, face the reality, where things moving all the time and apply anyway your technics while have to defend yourself effectivly, dont quit to your fear, be aware and concentrated all the time, no matter what fighter you have to face. In Dojo this situation is not easy to simulate. Tournaments provide a lot of sparringpartners meaning it verry seriously: they want to win ;) Its a play, right, this is also right for MMA at last. But its anyway a serious Game - and so it can help to prepare for real self defence should it ever be necessary (hopefully not), a situation with nor rules, no referees, possibility of verry serious damage and a lot of aggresive energy also. But anyway you are fully right: This is only a little little part of real Karate, there is so much more to study, understand and experience. In my opinion real Karate sooner or later makes the student verry aware: He ist not only a Body and a brainconstructed mind. We are energy. Spiritenergy, flowing and locking into the material world of the body and brainstructures. To realize this - which is the first step to become something like a "master" in its real meaning somewhere in future maybe - we must follow a good and over hundreds of years developed Way of at last spiritual meant exerciseprogramm. Traditional okinawan Karate is such a way - thats my opinion about it. Of course, we could also choose an other way, an original indian Yoga for example, and there are others. How to choose the right one for oneself? In my opinion with love. People that love Yoga, maybe its the right choice for them. But persons, who love Okinawa, its culture, people and its Karate -> you know, what i mean: maybe they are right there. Sportkarate can be a good start. But who wants to follow a real way of spiritual meant live, they have to go over and beyond this. They have to go to Okinawaspirit.

No, we hold a tournament once a year and that's only if you want to go. At my club they say the more the better and that there is no limit on what you want to do, also that you shouldent be close minded. They don't teach us how to fight in a tournemant, they condition us mentally and physically for real life situations.

I think you're mistaken, goju ryu and shotokan aren't competitive, shotokan maybe a little and kyokushin, yes but we only do it for conditioning and making us stronger. We learn it for defense purpose only and we get kicked out if we get in a fight for no reason. Remember that these are all traditional styles and they were made for self defense and not a sport. Also, i live in England, however i am not British so i hope that answers your question.

Well since you admit to fast forwarding through the very training methods I was extolling the virtues of, there is little wonder why you failed to see its value. Over the last 30 years I've researched multiple Okinawan martial arts, trained with some amazing Okinawan masters and have watched many hundred of hours of instructional video. I've trained long enough to know value when I see it. I stand by my statement.

All this strength training you can do with a simple bench press and hand grips exerciser and 300 pound Olympic style weights and bars curling bar and strait 45pound bench bar. The other stuff is good, but you could just buy that leg stretcher by Super foot Wallace or the cheaper one for a 100$.

Remember if you can lift your body weight you are strong, double your body weight is very strong and do Isometric exercises for strength and power.

Why the loud music that's almost drowns the narrators voice. at least in the beginning. Its still a good video which leaves me wondering how many katas are there in Goju ryu? I know there are 20 kata in the International Tae Kwon Do, 3 that i can see in Wing Chun done by master IP Man, etc. Some of these tournaments, especially in the ASEAN games that were held recently in the Philippines. the kata has lost its meaning; its like the narrator said, to score points and would add- a medal. How true and how sad.

Between 12 to 20 depending on the association. Some have several versions of the same kata. Some have kata unique to their association. Also when the lineage branched off. The core of the art was sanchin, tensho, naihanchi then it became tensho, sanchin, seisan, sanseiru. Then more kata were created and added upon these. The core of the art consists of movements derived from Kung Fu styles that existed in Fujian, Shanghai, and Taiwan such as whooping crane, half hillock half crane, tiger crane combination boxing, dog boxing, southern monk fist, and boxing. There is a Wikipedia page on the style. Also there is a blog page that cover this topic on how many kata and breaks it down according to lineage.

I understand what you are saying but back in India they were more based on health due to part of them being the practice of ayurveda or yoga in part with it. Yes china had health reasons too but that eventually evolved to a fighting art all together.

I didn't watch the the long movie, but there are 2 different types of practice. One for Karate and one for self defense. If they are teaching self defense as you described, then thats a problem. I have never been taught like that in either of my styles (Shudokan and Seidokan). I'm training in Okinawa right now and my sensei doesn't train or teach hands down, chin out either. That's just dumb.

I'm not gonna watch this whole video but yeah that would be silly to have your chin up and no defense when fighting. Still be respectful and do as Bruce Lee advocated and that's use what's useful and discard what's not.
