I will show you what you need and how to sand a deck to make it look amazing! It is not that difficult and not that expensive. You will need a few hours to go rent the machine then sand then return the machine. Home depot lets you rent either 4hrs or 24hr increments. I always do the 4hr rental, more than enough time.
Do not forget to get your pad and sand paper, I usually buy 4 of them. Also make sure you do not have any nails or screws sticking out prior to sanding or the sandpaper grid will get ripped quickly.
After sanding, just blow off the remains and put down your deck sealer.
Sanding and waterproofing deck. Make your deck look fantastic! I went to home depot and rented a sander to do my yearly deck sanding.

If you're sanding your deck every "year to 2 years"...you're obviously using a cheap or non lasting sealer such as Thompsons.....I sealed my deck 5 years ago with Cabot Australian Oil and it is still vibrant to this day !

A Deck Sander is recommended for deck sanding. A Square Buff Sander is only recommended for interior wood floors. Using a Square Buff Sander on an interior floor, you have the options to move the sander from left to right, right to left, forward and backward, backward to forward, and diagonal. Using a Square Buff Sander on a deck then you have only one option from left to right and right to left. Make sure all screws and nails are below the surface before sanding. I know this since I work at a Home Depot Tool Rental Center.

Thanks for the info, yah it can really only go left to right, right to left so true. I have been using the square buff sander for years, happy with the results. Might try the deck sander, i'll check it out this year.

Home depot has a deck sander with a weight kit, it will do a far better and faster job than the square butf machine you are using.. I looked quickly but did not see a note for what grit screen you used. guessing 80-100 grit. . Older decks with more cupping on the boards the square buff would be a very slow process but to power wash to remove most or all of the old finish leaves the deck fuzzy from the wood fibers being blasted with water.. so a light sanding is needed.. I think you lead people to belevie the sanding made the job look good.. when in fact, you power washed removing most of the finish and then a light touch up sand after the wood has dried from a week to 2 weeks depending on the area

It’s recommended to keep the cord up and over your shoulder, and behind you, so you’re not tripping over it and having to work around it.Sanding is definitely the best option if the wood is in poor condition. I use Armstrong Clark oil based stain, So my yearly deck prep consist of mopping it with a little bit of so be water using Dawn dish soap. That’s it. Then, if it does need a new coat of stain, I just wait for it to dry and roll on the stain with a paint roller, and brush in the edges. So easy. I would never use any other product. It’s also pet safe. And since it’s an oil based stain, it actually stains and protects the wood. Impossible for it to peel, because there’s nothing to peel up. The deck that I am having to sand, I used an acrylic “stain” on it, and it wasn’t inexpensive stuff. It’s an older deck, in a different part of the yard, and of course it peels and looks like hell, very high maintenance and not worth it at all. am going to sand it and use the Armstrong Clark. I’ve learned my lesson. And for those wondering, these decks go through extreme temperatures of high heat and extreme cold and snow and ice, and my Armstrong Clark deck looks great, Because it’s a piece of cake to maintain. I would never pressure wash it, they told me to not use anything on it that I wouldn’t wash my car with, so I just use a good old fashioned deck mop. The Dawn dish soap cuts through any grease and dirt, give it a good rinse with just the regular hose, no harsh pressure. Hi baby the word when it comes to cleaners and rinsing it, everything mild is key. I wash it like it’s fine china, and it thanks me for it. Doesn’t hurt to use an outdoor rug over your high traffic areas as well, looks good, and helps maintain your wood.
@misskim2058
@misskim2058 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, I just love how Siri/YT changes words when you hit reply....Typos galore. Like I was saying, they said not to pressure wash it because it’s hard on the wood grain, and not to use anything on the wood as far as product or scrubbers that you wouldn’t use on your car’s paint job. Hence the Dawn soapy water and a deck mop. And that’s “baby the wood”, keep it mild, be gentle on it, use the right product, and you won’t find yourself having to sand and re-stain very often, and when you do, it will be as easy as mopping your floors.

If you have some larger cracks, or holes, you should use a wood filler to fill them in. I recommend doing this first, before you sand. AND, if you have a board that is somewhat bad, you could try turning it over, vs buying a new one. If the bottom side is in good condition, flipping it over can save you from buying a new piece of wood.

I rented this machine for my deck and it was horrible. This sander is not meant to be used on outdoor decks. This sander went through 4 sand paper pads in about 10 minutes. Each of the sand paper pads costs about 8 dollars. If you're planning on sanding your outdoor deck I suggest using a orbital Deck Sander.
@CarlosVasquez
@CarlosVasquez 3 жыл бұрын
My guess is your deck wood planks had nails or wood pieces that were not flush. This would explain why it ripped the sandpaper grids. Your deck board had to be corrected somewhat prior to using the sander. You might need a drum sander, which is very aggressive. About orbital sanders..sure they would work but it will take hours and hours to do a deck. Good luck on your choice.

All the manufacturers of pressure treated lumber don’t advise sanding their wood due to the release of fine particles of the preservative chemical into the air. Copper being one ingredient which is harmful to the soil and plants and maybe arsenic, back when pressure treated lumber first was marketed. Check to see when your deck was built to determine if it contains arsenic. If it does, don’t sand it.
@CarlosVasquez

Thanks Michael for the info. Good thing my deck was built after 2003, so no arsenic. I will do another video this year, but I will make sure that I have a respirator on and let everyone know they need to wear one too when sanding. Thanks again.

Does sanding a deck once its dried and with sun beating down, encourage the grain to come up ripply and uneven ? Years ago I sanded mine with an orbital sander, and eventually the surface came really uneven, with bits of wood coming up almost in shards. That makes me hesitant to do it again.

Hi, well the first thing is you are going to have to check the boards for wood rot. If any boards are soft and squishie they will probably need to be replaced. Do it your self, just take one board at a time out. If you don't replaced the boards that are bad it won't look good unfortunately. Take your time, don't try an finish it all in one weekend. So basically you need a good base, and that's good wood, no warping or rot.

Power washing is just cleaning, but when you sand wood it removes the top layer to give you a fresh layer of wood. I use to just power wash it and apply waterproofer. It just never looks new/fresh wood. So if you want it to look fresh then sand it. If not, then it's ok too..it just won't look as good. The effort pays off always.

Applied it (16 x 16) to the deck with a pad two coats and let it fry for 4 days. Then I wheeled my grill on it and the stain was lifting with my wheels. When testing how it can be removed, it peels off easy with a orbital hand sander. The stain or acrylic never penetrated the wood. The paper did not even clog up. Do you think this machine can remove the coating even if I have to buy more pads? Thank you

How easy or difficult is it to remove paint from a wood deck? And is it worth it?
@TigDegner

I'm in the process of removing paint from my deck right now. I started with a belt sander, and realized that even with 36 grit sandpaper, it was going to take a long time. So I got a planer. The planer is much quicker, but at this point I feel like it's worth it to just disassemble the deck so I can ensure there are no screws my planer will hit. And that's where I'm at, is assembling my deck. I'm learning a lot and it's a lot of work, but I think it's worth it to conserve lumber and restore this 30yr-old deck. My plan is to fill holes, plane, sand, stain, and steal the components before I put them back together.

It removes this stain like butter!

Why is deck wood sealer cost so much? If ive done my math correctly, one gallon of it will basically do one privacy fence panel -front and back with a tiny bit left over. Even buying a 5 gallon bucket doesnt seem like it saves too much. Even outdoor paint is costly. I have about 16 panels i need to weather proof somehow (stain or paint) asap so they dont rot.

Use thompson watersealer, this is for decks. I checked its about 15 dollars a gal here in Maryland. Do not paint a deck flooring, that will turn into a headache in a few years. For a fence paint is fine, this will give you the best protection from the elements since you can paint all sides.

Unfortunately, we inherited a painted wood deck when we moved here. It's a pain to maintain. I'd love to be able to sand off the paint and apply a stain/sealer to it. Will this machine remove the paint by itself? Or do I still need stripper as well? Thanks for the video!
@CarlosVasquez
@CarlosVasquez Жыл бұрын
You will need another type of sander. Home depot rents a drum sander for the floor. It will remove the paint, but you have to keep it moving, can not let it stay in one place. It will take the paint right off, except between the wood. That is the real pain, you can leave the paint or get a chemical remover for the paint the drum sander can not reach.

Great idea.... I used that horrible home Depot deck-over by Rust-Oleum. It's peeling everywhere and a lot came off with a power washer. Do you think this method will work? There's only one or two coats on it?
@CarlosVasquez
@CarlosVasquez 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it will work. Get some lower grit screens to get it off quickly. Then go over it with 120 grit screens to make it smooth. After it's all done blow it off with a leaf blower then apply the Thompson water proofer. It will look nice again! Make sure you get all the screws and nails below the sand line first or it will tear the sand grid.

Thank you I think even I could do this! Being a woman at all LOL. This morning I went out to my deck with my sandpaper my scraper my wire brush my regular brush and was totally overwhelmed. Now that I’ve seen your video Home Depot here I come . What I had in mine was priming it and then painting it. I have already bought both. The water seal seems beautiful and much easier. Maybe I’ll use this on my front deck and my back deck which is huge I can do the water seal. Thank you and what do you think?
@CarlosVasquez
@CarlosVasquez 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, well I would avoid painting the floor. The issues to me is whenever you put any type of furniture or decorations eventually it will be dragged. Then your paint will get scratched up then flake, just not worth it in my opinion. Instead of paint maybe a stain, lots of colors available. Easy to apply and gives you color. If you go with stain, you still will need to apply waterproofing on top. Hopefully that helps.

Well if you have splinters sticking out, first your going to have to address it. You may need to remove the splinter wood pieces, i just do not know how bad. Once those are cleared up you may need a more aggressive sander, belt type, they are rented at home depot as well. This belt sander/drum sander are directional, also have to keep them moving, can not stand still with them. The mold issue, will I would power wash it all off, then do a bleach mix afterwards. If you were to stain your deck after sanding it you wouldn't have to do it every year just a tip but with the water Thompson water sealer you can't stain it now it won't sink in the wood.
@CarlosVasquez
@CarlosVasquez 3 жыл бұрын
Thompson water sealer is not permanent. Your deck can be stained after 1 year due to the water sealer properties wearing off. Thompson water sealer says on the can you will have to reapply depending on your weather. In Maryland we get lots of rain and have 4 seasons. This environment wears out the sealer quickly. So after about a year you can stain your deck since the water proofer has worn off.
