Visualize the fretboard, master scales and play through changes like a pro with intervallic functions!
‣ Solo is a revolutionary practice tool designed by world renowned fusion guitarists Tom Quayle and David Beebee.
‣ One of the biggest barriers to improvising on guitar is finding and mapping out the relevant chord tones and scales all over on the fretboard in real time.
Solo is a highly focussed app for developing your note finding and visualization ability on the guitar. There is no time-based pressure and Solo reduces the cognitive load of having to choose which ‘notes/intervals’ to play. As you get quicker at finding these ‘notes’ you will conversely get better at choosing them whilst improvising. Players of all ability levels will reap huge benefits from practicing with Solo.
‣ Using common progressions, Solo presents you with one chord symbol or scale at a time and asks you to find and play a series of notes based on their intervallic function.
‣ Solo listens to the notes you play, analyzes them in real time, and doesn’t move on until you’ve correctly found each note by its intervallic function in the specified order.
‣ This process builds strong fretboard visualization for the most powerful, efficient and malleable way to KNOW your way around the fretboard no matter how difficult the chord changes are.
As a unique and powerful ear training tool, Solo also develops your ability to not only visualize what you’re playing, but hear it in real time too.
If you know your note names but struggle to learn new scales, play through chord changes or find yourself stuck in pattern based playing, practicing diligently with Solo will be transformational for your knowledge of the fretboard and subsequently your ability to outline harmony when you improvise.
‣ CHANGES PLAYING TRAINER
Practice finding intervallic functions over a series of chord changes based on common and popular chord progressions. Solo is programmed with all the knowledge behind the scenes to understand jazz and popular music harmony and will always pick appropriate intervallic functions based on the harmony of the progression.
‣ SCALE TRAINER
Practice finding intervallic functions within scales on the fretboard. Solo includes all the modes of the Major, Melodic Minor, Harmonic Minor and Harmonic Major scales, plus pentatonic and symmetrical scales. Seeing and finding scale tones as intervallic functions will transform your ability to manipulate and improvise with scales in real time.
‣ TUTORIALS
Solo also includes video tutorials to get you started with intervallic functions, how to find them on the fretboard, using Solo for ear training and how to get the most from your practice time with the app.

Thanks for putting up with my awful singing! 😂 You really don’t have to have a great voice, but practising this way is incredibly useful for building a strong awareness of intervallic function, and for audiating what we hear on the fretboard! Let us know how you get on with this in the comments 👂🏻👍🏻

Years ago I did a two-day workshop with Howard Roberts and he talked about being able to visualize and be able to practice without the guitar. I regret not following his advice but practicing this skill seemed daunting at the time. Now finally I will be able to practice this because of the solo app, thanks for showing how you can ear train with this tool as well. Awesome.

Just tried it out, more singing practice required! But I did manage to work my way through a couple of scales.

Hello Dave and Tom - after being from the remembering scales via shapes and the caged system, I listened to TGH and am now working on the intervallic approach that you guys discuss - so I just downloaded SOLO and - its awesome. Love the fact you can select just the root note from progressions etc, This is now my go to practise tool along with IRealPro. Great piece of kit guys - keep developing it !!!!!

The importance of this kind of practice cannot be overstated. Steve Vai is a big proponent.

For sure, Vai has often talked about connecting the ears, voice and hands. I really feel this kind of practise is on the right path and improves audiation. Charlie Benacos and the functional ear training methods have also been a game changer!

@@SoloApp Big time! I think one big advantage too is it allows you to break out of visual scale shapes and create your own pathways. Once you've internalized the sound of a scale you should be able to play it all over the neck in many different ways.

@@SoloApp Actually, I do... Is there a way for me to isolate a key signature inside the Changes setting? Sometimes I want to customize my own chord progression, for example, let's say I just want to work on the key of C maj with any random chord progression I can think of, 1645, 1564, 654, etc. It's cool that I can pick the chord tones and melodic structures so I can concentrate which notes I want to emphasize but is there a setting where I can structure a chord progression within a specific key? The closest one that I can see is going through the circle of 4ths, but sometimes I want to do some isolated practice on my own ideas....

That was very brave… 😂 and working. Which is good. I have now been using the app for a few weeks. It works really well. Here are a few suggestions: - Triads workout (it would need to be sequential because of the way the app works): 1,3,5 and then 3,5,7 on 7th chords, and inversions. - Different training mode: asks to provide chord number from a given root rather than actual note. - asks to play note number within scale for a given chord rather than number with respect to the chord. Example: 4th chord is actually made of 4,6, and 1. - being able to define and use our own chord progression. - more of a remark: I didn’t get the voice leading training option 😅
@SoloApp
@SoloApp 3 жыл бұрын
Haha yea I'm past the age of caring about much these days! Thanks for the suggestions Nikoo, all noted for later discussions. I can tell you that custom chord progressions is on the roadmap, and voice leading is only available when "random" order is selected in workout options. Not all levels will be able to do this, but the really useful one I like is 1, 3, 5, 7, then turn on random, then voice leading is available. Hope that helps. 🐝

Superb tutorial as always! Didn't you guys think about creating calibration profiles to easier switch between guitar and voice?
@SoloApp
@SoloApp 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alexander, glad you liked it! Actually you've given me an idea, profiles between voice and guitar on the same mic/device wouldn't work, but could actually make profiles for interface and onboard mic. Will stick it on the list!

@@SoloApp fair :) If only it could listen to a computer, then any interface would work. But I guess it'd require some tricky audio routing setup in the OS. Anyway, thanks again, fantastic app and beautiful people you are!

@@Tvaroh haha you're too kind! One more thought I had, the Apple Silicon Mac version is able to use any interface that works with MacOS. I realise that's a small number of machines right now, but it will grow. And we may be able to "port" it via catalyst at some point.

To whom it may concern, I tried this singing exercise with the app and it flat out doesn't work. I tried to adjust every single calibration but, the calibration of this app is terrible with the voice. If I sing the wrong pitch, the solo app would consider it as correct, when I know for sure I bombed the pitch. When I do sing the correct pitch, the solo app would either not respond or consider it a wrong pitch. Sometimes I would repeat the correct pitch excessively and the solo app would not pick it up and before I know it, it would suddenly detect 2 or three pitches that I did not sing, spoiling the exercise. I was able to work out the solo app on the voice sometimes. What I do is that if I'm singing the root note wrong, I would go to another room and sing the root note on the guitar or piano, then go back singing to the app on the living room. But yeah I'm having a rough first day with this singing exercise. In all fairness though, the solo app works very well with the guitar, piano, and even a wind/brass instrument (I play sax & clarinet) but terrible with the voice. That's basically my whole point. If the creator of this solo app is reading this message, I would suggest the creator to fix this issue, specifically to the voice. This is supposed to be a brilliant ear training/solfege exercise. I believe this exercise is the key to unlock everyone's soloing abilities and inner ear on the guitar. Thanks, Jason
