One of the consistently weirdest things about ONI is that buildings don't conduct heat to the floors they are sitting on. But one little conduction panel behind the building, and suddenly that heat just comes gushing out all over the floor.

Is also weird that there is no thermal radiation. In real life, things get cold, satellites needs make balance between heat of the sun and cold vacuum in the space. In ONI, rockets should cool themselves. There is a mod that add thermal radiation to buildings exposed to space.

TLDR: conduction panel works as liquid or refined wire bridge but also exchanges heat with the building in front of them. Case closed, you could say it in 60 seconds short

Just want to bring up that the conduction panel touching a building and tile has always been a viable cooling method. The conduction panel was terrible in previous versions at transferring the heat to the piped liquid passing by. I've done tests on both the previous version and current version of the game, and conduction panels from both versions equalize temp with hot buildings very quickly. However when having liquid pipes pass the panel, the -35c super coolant raised only to -25c on previous version, and on the current version it raised to 60c. (Building temp is 800c).

I would have liked to see the conductivity of the panel to the pipes liquid. Without bleeding the heat into a tile (floating building, or on mesh tile), but instead just pulling heat from an isolated hot building, how much heat can the 10kg/s of the pipe pull away? Different liquids vs different panel materials would be interesting too.

It can drain significantly more heat with a conductive panel than with a blob of liquid or gas in the same place. I switched all my regolith collection setup to conductive panels with super coolant, and it drains the heat from buildings near instantaneously.

would been interesting to see if a conduction panel made out of a material can transfer heat faster then a tile made out of the same material.
@ulasuncu5721
@ulasuncu5721 Жыл бұрын
Issue was that previous the liquid "inside" the panel would only sit for a split second, not a whole second like it does on radiant pipes, which severly limited heat transfer. It would only work by adding a valve or shutoff after the conduction panel to force liquids to sit inside. Now piping liquid works without any hassles. Conduction panel to tile method has been working wonders ever since it was first introduced.

Great work as always, @Echo 😁😘 So basically, conduction panels still work the same way as when it was introduced to the game, it's just been improved by increasing how much thermal conductivity affects the average thermal transfer. Even the tooltip says "without any liquids running through", which a "few" previous comments confused me: no patch notes stating it was changed to requiring liquids, and tooltip still stating the same. When it was introduced, someone (can't remember who it was) built a petrolium boiler using a conduction panel in a vacuum, and it was just as effective as one powered by magma, just a much smaller footprint in terms of size.

5:21 In this test, you should have shown the Bunker tile temperature rather then the Blaster one. The Meteor Blasters started at different temperatures, the tiles all were 20°C. Their temperature after a while is much more indicative of heat transfer. - the conduction panel has 0 negative decor and can exchange heat very quickly per tiles exposed. So it might also be better at thermally controlling living areas when you do not want to run a pipe just above the floor. You can have the liquid pipes in the floor - possibly even isolated - and only have pipes stick out to use a conduction panel

It's a reasonable replacement for radiant pipes in general. Any place you want to run multiple radiant pipe sections to cool a machine you should probably just use one of these. Two reasons: it's 3 segments long, and only 100 metal (vs 1 for 50). I might have to do some experimenting to see if they arrive early enough to use before I just want to build an enclosed brick

Hey! I did a very extensive testing, And the conclusion is that, radiant is just way better at effecting the temperature per kg. But I've found some uses for them... you would use them instead of building liquid bridges so you effect the temperature more with the space you have, And maybe in early projects in your colony to conserve metals, And of course in vacuums. Would love of you have more info about them

You can use these conduction panels to melt the steel walls of the rocket interior, too. Use liquid uranium as a coolant for metal refineries, feed that liquid through tungsten or thermium conduction panels in the rocket walls, and eventually the steel walls will melt. Then you can build massive rocket interiors for lavish duplicant space condos.

Thanks, Echo! Nice experiment. What about trying to cool a steam turbine sitting in a vacuum on insulated tiles. Fairly common application. The key difference is you do not want to transfer heat generated by the turbine into the tiles (also from your experiment it would not work well on insulated tiles). One would need to run water through a conduction panel in such case, but would it be more effective than dropping water on the floor and cooling water with radiant pipes?

Thank you! I've felt so gaslighted by everyone poo pooing conduction panels when -- at least lately --- I've had pretty good results in various applications. Now that makes sense. Now do shine bugs vs germs. Seriously. Everyone hates th' bugs, but they're such great free slimelung and food poisoning control (zombie spores even), because they almost always can be encouraged to go where you need them with very little effort. I wouldn't spend a lot of resources ranching or relocating shine bugs, but most of the time it's only a matter of leaving certain doors open for them to wander through, or at most, picking up and moving an egg to a prime location so they'll disinfect it for you later. Often a zone filled with slimelung can be left to the shinebugs to deal with while I turn my attention somewhere else for a while. If you have a nyctophobic dupe (for whatever reason) it's sometimes easy to shoo a bug to where their cot is, or leave an egg there. Why not? I still kill them if they're confined near the main barracks, if I can't get them to wander out in a cycle or two.

Thing is though I've always found the condition panels to be really useful for say when I'm trying to pump water from a cool steam vent using the drain mod so that i don't have to install any pumps & then pipe that over to the frozen biome but not all the time especially on the spaced out DLC do i have room to snake a crap ton of radiant pipes especially early game to be able to effectively bring down that 50-80C water down to a 10-30C before i pump it into a building that needs water or even say warm up salt water/brine from a -14C temp so that i can run it through my desalinator w/o destroying the machine or my pipes from it being too cold. My last go at ONI really gave it to me cuz i was trying out one of the new maps they added to SO & wasn't paying attention to the fact my asteroid had a "frozen core" world trait which really bit me in the clover leaf cuz i had buildings & machines breaking everywhere cuz the min any type of liquid let alone a gas stopped moving things started to freeze & break. I was even busting insulated pipes my asteroid was that cold.

my only real question since this was added to the game is, what are the actual stats on using it VS just the radiant pipe, in an environment, of course? Like material use of metals comparison, and effective speeds comparison. Example. Say I need to cool a machine (typical use, like in reality how they are used on most Fridges) Would using the conduction panel be a better option, or, simply some radiant pipes? How many pipes? Which is better in typical gasses? (CO2, Oxygen, Hydrogen) These all have typically 2 uses. Heat Injection, or Heat Equalization(cooling) into a specific area, namely the area with a building your trying to keep from overheating, but, sometimes into an area where you want more heat to go. So there may be some designs of old inventions that can be shrunk down, or take less materials, or simply less footprint - by using the C.Panel - namely in creating areas of cold for all sorts of needs.

Looks like it behaves sort of like an aquatuner, except the cooling factor is calculated based on the temperature of the liquid and the panel. It draws heat (or chill) from the liquid proportional to the temperature difference and uses its thermal conductivity and the high difference in temperature to equalise temperature between it and the enviroment

Before it was trash and I stopped using it. Things just overheated in space using it. If it's not bugged the other way now and is too powerful, then it's now worth using. At first they burned down, had no idea you had to put them in a liquid. Let that run for a bit and temperature got so high the yellow water started to turn into steam. I just don't get it how are we supposed to keep things cool in the game? I'm too dumb for complicated schematics but with that said heat is such a big problem that I just can't solve. Everything else has been fine trial and error. Should I be building stuff up in space for cooling purposes or won't that work?

Heat is interesting because there are very few ways to destroy it. Early game, there are two tools that can help you get rid of heat: Wheezeworts and Anti-Entropy Thermo Nullifiers. Wheezeworts are plants found in the ice biomes which delete heat and produce radiation when given phosphorite. AETNs are Gravitas buildings found in ice biomes (inside blocks of ice) which use hydrogen to delete heat. Late game, the Steam Turbine converts heat to energy. It will eat Steam, cool it to 98°C, and convert 90% of the heat into watts. Add an aquatuner to cool the turbines and you have a heat-deleting machine. Of course, just piping water to send heat into a cold area can last a surprisingly long time.

can this not be done with tempshift plates? since that is what they are supposed to be able to do

My question would be, How does the conduction panel compare to a temp shift plate?
@vlgi
@vlgi Жыл бұрын
OK, I had a play, it seems a temp shift plate only conducts to another medium, such as solid, liquid or gas, so it doesn't conduct to a building* in vacuum. To cool a building in a vacuum, you need some medium in between, such as a drop of super coolant. An exception is building that exist as a material such as some doors, a mechanized airlock exists as two chunks of the metal it is made from when closed, and a temp plate will interact with that solid mass of the door. Without a medium, A rock crusher I used as an example building would not be conducted to by the temp shift plate.

This is a great workaround but eventually you will still have to deal with heat. I need to plug mine into a space scanner either way :)

Question about the conduction panel: will you start to use it, Echo?

So, effectively, conduction panels are 3x1 tempshift plates, except (a) they can pull heat out of buildings directly, and (b) the middle tile only works if a liquid is passing through.

So I’m still confused with this thing. Does it transfer heat through the center tile or the output tile? I’m trying to use it to melt ice on Rime and I get inconsistent results.

Just think of it as a normal bridge with an additional game mechanic on its center tile. Its I/O tiles act like a normal bridge. The center tile, however, act like a background element which strictly interact with only a building. That means, the I/O tiles transfer heat to elements they touch (but not a building), while the center tile only transfers heat to a building.
