Another case of something I never would have thought of, but of course knowing a solution exists. “ Once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever is left, however improbable is the correct solution.” Thanks Daniel.

Nice to once in a while see a puzzle where the best defense is in question. Thanks Daniel!

It’s puzzles like this why I love chess. It seems like a very tactical position (lots checks, captures, pins etc) leading to white losing. However, in between all those tactical variations is a subtle defensive strategy that makes perfect logical sense after one has discovered the problems with the other variations e.g the Qh1 mating motif. Brilliant analysis Mr King. Thank you

Absolut delight. Lovely to see this kind of puzzle every once in a while. I definitely would've played f3 though 😅 cheers Daniel!

a nice illustration of how different human brains are to computers - very hard for us to find such moves i think

I got the idea after the clue, but even then I felt white was lost after Qc4+ - kept looking at Ke1 and d2, both of which seemed to lose, and something in me doesn't like my king heading up to the third rank.

Ultimately it actually seems to be quite simple despite the initial complications, because once I realized that Re8 and Qxh1 or Qxd4 were the threats, it immediately disallows most of the moves in the position.

I too would surely have played "f3" - and lost! R to g1 - like the tale of Columbus & the Egg (once the answer becomes known...)

Nice one this is. How long might it take for a human to find that one defensive move? It is definitely not even in top 10 considered moves when you think of it
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess Жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s a question of ‘how long’ it would take to find the move, it’s whether one still believes there might be a defence. If you do, then it’s quite possible to find the move.

This is the first non-Ding Liren Thursday puzzle in a while. Are there any rumors as to when he's going to re-emerge and begin legitimizing his championship? Until that happens we're going to keep seeing things like this, from the Guardian: "The elephant in the room is the general perception among top players that China’s Ding Liren is a subpar world champion who will be vulnerable to his next challenger."
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess Жыл бұрын
I don’t see that Ding has to legitimise his title. He won it fair and square and his performance in other events is irrelevant. Can he reach No.1 on the rating list? That’s another question. Personally, I doubt it. But will he be able to defend his title in a couple of years? He has more chance of that. So, the real issue is: does it matter that the World Champion isn’t no.1 on the rating list?

Yes. But first you need the belief that something is there to be found.

These are the hardest puzzles, especially if you play white. You have a shitty position, you feel terrible, and then you should find Rg1. No way.
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess Жыл бұрын
There’s no one tapping you on the shoulder telling you there’s a defence, this is the problem. It just feels like an overwhelming initiative. Nevertheless, I think this is a really instructive idea.

@@PowerPlayChess Absolutely, I think it's a great idea to bring such positions and not just brilliant tactics. This is the beauty of chess.

But must black really settle for a perpetual? Why not take out the isolated pawn and then hone in on f2?
