I love my scan and cut dx. A word of advise for those who still have it in the box is take it out and use it before the warranty is expired. I didn't use mine right away but when I did it wouldn't cut completely. I took it to a class and my instructor said to have it serviced. I ended up getting a new machine from Brother because there was an issue with the calibration. The new one works great and my grandson thinks I'm an awesome grandma because we can do so many crafty things with it. 😁

Yesterday I happened upon your video for the machine embroidered composition book cover, and was fascinated -- because I have a new Bernina 770 with the embroidery module. And machine embroidery is totally new to me. I really learned a lot from just that one video. Plus I was drooling over your studio and all your "power tools." So... today, after I opened my newly purchased ScanNCut SDX135 Pro, I started looking at some "newbie" videos. Lo and behold, on the "up next" list, I see that YOU had a video for the ScanNCut! And the reason I got mine is the same reason you like yours - for cutting applique pieces. In my case, I designed a pillow, with applique and quilting, that features a specific camper van. After I made one for myself, everyone in my camper Facebook group wanted me to make one for them. Hmmm... I thought, how could I make this easier, rather than tracing and cutting out 12 different pieces for each pillow, over and over?? Accuquilt? Ugh, custom dies. Cricut? Not sure. And then I found the ScanNCut, which sounded like exactly what I needed. I can scan my own shapes in. Now, my machine has the autoblade that detects the material being cut. And supposedly it will cut up to 3mm of thickness. What I HOPE is that I can cut several pillows' worth of pieces at a time. I was thinking also of using Hotfix Adhesive so that I might not even have to stitch along the edges of the raw-edge applique. By any chance have you tried Hotfix? The steps you showed here are ideal for helping me see how I can proceed with my applique pillow project! Thanks. And any advice or suggestions are welcome!

Thank you so much for this video. Over 10 years ago I was in a quilt shop and saw a beautiful Noah's Ark quilt on the wall. My friends and the owner of the shop convinced me that I could make the quilt. No problems! So I bought the kit. After looking at the instructions I put the kit in a drawer! I have a scan n cut now and after watching your video I feel more confident about cutting out all of the applique pieces to make it. Thanks again!

Bought it from a dealer and two weeks after i bought it the instructor quit and I never got one class and the Dealer never got someone else. Then six months later the Dealer went out of business. GRRR So here I am with a brand new Scan and Cut and can't do a lot as the few videos out there are not helpful and some are confusing. GRRR. Thanks Becky for this video. You are awesome.

Your comment is one of the reasons I make these types of videos. When I got my first cutting machine I was intimidated by it too...and I work in computers! If I was scared of it, I can only imagine how I would feel if I didn't have a clue what button to push. It took me months to figure it out and I actually signed up for classes. Now I'm sharing a bit of that knowledge with you. If necessary, just follow the video bit-by-bit and stop it all along the way as needed. You'll get this!

WoW! What an amazing lesson. I've owned the SNC since 2014 have one of the original models which I still use. I do not own the DX but I am going to give this method a try on my machine (saving to USB as it has no wireless on the original) I had not thought about scanning for canvas from paper patterns that's a pretty amazing deal because when you scan from your printer to pdf or image then bring it into other softwares you normally end up with a double line around each shape and have to remove them. I am definitely going to see if that double line is avoided with my older SNC and Canvas. Next, your point on using the fatter areas to lift your fabric is right on, one might have also pointed out that if they try with thinner areas it is easier to "break" that line and the shape ends up in two or more pieces :/ but it's easier to pull it up when you start in the fatter part of the shape. You've definitely gained a new subscriber in me and I'm going to recommend this video when I'm asked in the future about cutting fabric on the SNC. Thank you so much!!

I want to start with applique but know I will probably get into vinyl for some wall decor and as the grand-babies arrive I'm sure we will get into all kinds of fun crafts. Now...to save the money and go visit local dealer in town that I never knew was here. Currently using a Babylock Solaris & Palette 11 and hope it will work with my what I have. Hi fab video, but not sure why you attached the high tack support sheet to your mat, you only need that for cutting unbounded fabric. If you are using HNB ironed onto the back of fabric you can cut it perfectly on a sticky regular mat. Just put HNB side down on the mat also no need to mirror images. Hope that helps

So...if you noticed a difference in the video at 13:50, there's only two rows of letters and I originally put my fabric on without the fabric support sheet. Then at the end of the cutting process, you can tell there's a letter in the middle of mat and things are all moved around. That's because without the fabric support sheet, the fabric moved during the cutting process and I had a huge mess! I had to use the wipes you see on the table to clean the mat and then I added the support sheet and had zero problems. lol

You know the black lines that you got would not show up if you tear the edges of the paper ragged. The lines are straight cuts. Learned this in printing industry....of course its always fun to play with canvasworks.

Well I finally purchased a Scan and Cut in April. Unboxed it and set it on the table. Tonight I thought I would try to scan and cut an object. I scanned my object (the outline of my mini iron). I saved it to the Scan and Cut. I didn’t go to the canvas because I haven’t set it up yet. I have a thin silicone coaster that I plan to cut the iron shape out of. When I went to scan it was told to switch the lever to 2 because of the thickness, I did. When I go to view I can’t see mine object scanned over the silicone because the silicone is black. So I was just going to wing it but I keep getting a message “attached appropriate holder” what in the world is that? Also there are two blades one gold and one black on the top but there is nothing that tell me what the difference is. I looked at the bottom and the black one has a larger whole, so I was using that. Figured it was for heavier items. I mostly plan to use this for sewing but do plan to try other things. I even purchased the ever expensive Playbook. It has a card that is supposed to have a USB with projects but I guess I’ll have to call Albrands and ask how it works.

If you're receiving the notice to switch to 2, that means that whatever you're attempting to cut is thicker than a sheet of paper or fabric and the machine suspects it might get all caught up under the rollers or worse inside the machine. If you're wanting to cut on a dark color like black, then you kind of have to either guess approximately where the design will cut or upload to Canvas so you can actually see the grid lines on the mat (virtually) and then know for sure that your cutting material is where it needs to be. The "attach appropriate holder" error (from what I've found searching on the web) refers to the blade holder. I've never seen it myself. Perhaps the machine thinks you're trying to draw or etch when you really just want to cut? There are videos on KZfaq of this error I think. The black blade is for cutting thicker materials up to 3mm in depth and the gold blade is for cutting fabric. Good luck!

@@PowerToolsWithThread Thanks for all your help. Turns out I hadn’t locked the blade properly. I cut my iron pad out, successfully! I also found out how to get that USB stick to pop out of the credit card that goes with the Playbook. I was doing it correctly, I just didn’t press hard enough. Now that I have successfully completed my first project it’s time to create my canvas space, register and start playing with my machine. Even though I purchased it for fabric I plan to go through the playbook and learn about everything. Now the question is when I make a cover for it do I embroider it, appliqué it, or do a laminate transfer? Decisions, decisions. Next project though will be to cut the fabric for a small wristlet purse. Again Thank You 😊.

Becky -- Loved your presentation and although I have a Silhouette Cameo, I want to invest in a ScanNCut. Most of my project will be smaller than a bed quilt and so I love the ability to put multiple fabrics with the shapes to cut on the same mat. Since new models are coming out, can you recommend the best model for this type of ScanNCut? Thanks!

OMG!!!! This video was FANTABULOUS!!! thank you for such a thorough and candid overview with hands on showing all the steps! I've been planning on getting a scanncut for over a year now, hubz is even on board, but I'll have to start with the CM350e before I can model-up! If you see this comment and have a chance to reply, any concerns about the 350e??
@PowerToolsWithThread
@PowerToolsWithThread 4 жыл бұрын
No problems at all with the 350 that I'm aware of. But you might consider the DX125. It's much less expensive than the 225 of Amazon and the ability of the blade to determine it's own depth is awesome.

Hi Becky, Thanks for explaining the scan and cut . I am considering buying one for doing applique also. My question is about scanning the pattern into the machine. On your pattern you are doing is multi layered. Do you need to cut it into small pieces or not for scanning the images. Can you scan the whole pattern in just like it is( other than it is too big for one scan.) Will you be able to move the pattern pieces around separately once it is in the scan and cut? I hope you can understand my question. Thank you for your help. You do a great job teaching. Happy Retirement.
@PowerToolsWithThread
@PowerToolsWithThread 4 жыл бұрын
If you have a multi-layer pattern - like a carrot nose on a snowman - I recommend tracing the individual pieces onto a separate sheet of paper vs. cutting up the original pattern. Use a pen with a good line on it like a dark Sharpie. If possible, keep all pieces that will be the same color grouped together just for ease of cutting. And yes, once the pattern is scanned into the machine, you can move them around on the machine's screen or in the Brother Canvas to group them as you like. When a pattern is too big as printed from the manufacturer, again, trace the individual pieces onto a separate sheet of paper that you can then scan in individually. If you think you might be doing a lot of large applique quilts or fabric cutting from larger paper patterns, then I recommend spending a little extra for DX225 or higher models. All SNC models can cut on the 24" mat, but the DX125 can't scan a 24" mat.

Question about ScanN&cut( can you take an appliqué design such as MAMA and cut the letters out on this machine off of then machine embroidery design so it cuts it out prior to the embroidery? I have the hardest time cutting around the letters after I embroidery them.

Question, I just got a scan and cut for my birthday today. The directions only show the small tray on the back pulling out, but it looks like the larger tray on the back pulls out also, but mine is sticking on one side and the directions don’t show the second larger tray pull out.
