To be specific, prussians were eventually germanized and their language vanished after a devastating plague hit the region in the 18th century. It was so bad in fact, that the the local german authorities invited lithuanian migrants to repopulate those territories, paving the way for the so called "little lithuania" (roughly the eastern half of today's kaliningrad oblast) that later played a significant part in lithuanian cultural revival during the "spring of nations" of the 19th century where lithuanians could print books before smuggling them to the then imperial russian controlled lithuania, where the lithuanian language, esp book printing was banned. As for the german-speaking prussians or people of prussian ancestry, they were deported to germany along with the ethnic germans after the war.

I think it's really great that you keep this ancient language alive! I have one question though, how hard would you say is it to learn this language as a Latvian speaker? Or how similar are these languages today? I've heard that for Lithuanians it's quite easy to understand prussian but tbh as a Latvian (I need to say that I dont speak fluent Latvian since I grew up in Bavaria) I only understand a few words.

Dīnkun!-Paldies! You can also check such a more formal type of Prussian language. Here is a video where the language is less natural as it was recorded intentionally for studying purpose kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jMmXqrl_stbDmHk.html There are very different opinions. Some Latvians say that they understand almost 100%, other Latvians say they understand nothing : ). It just depends on how a person sees and hears the world and other people. If a person already programmed himself that he understands Latvian ONLY, so then perhaps he just doesn't want to hear anything more : ) And of course, it depends on what other languages a person knows. If Latvian speaker understands Lithuanian and some Slavic languages, so then he automatically would catch up to 40-50% without any studying of Prussian.

@prusiskataliwidasna
@prusiskataliwidasna 4 жыл бұрын
this "old" is a just political attitude when official governments want to show that such a thing must be "dead" in a museum only just because today this ethnic aspect doesn't belong to any of official governments and nobody of them doesn't want to spend money on it. And this "old" means that it is "cost-efficient" for them to proclaim something as an "extinct". We speak now in modern Prussian like all other people speak in their modern languages - modern English, modern Lithuanian and so on. But originally this term "old" were used by linguists in 19 cent just to distinguish the real Baltic Prussian from German dialect.
@cius96
@cius96 4 жыл бұрын
@@prusiskataliwidasna I got your point and I agree with you about that (and it's quite a shame that such a beautiful language is forgotten and "shadowed"), but I think he was asking if the "modern version" you are speaking is still close enough / almost identical to the one spoken in 1300-1600 (and found in some translations of the Bible) or it has evolved with time and changed like the other 2 main baltic languages (Lithuanian and Latvian; although they are pretty conservative if we compare them to other indoeuropean languages, they have definitely evolved during the last 500 years). So, the question was, is the language you speak like the "ancient one", namely a restored version of the "medieval prussian", or a modern version with a quite different vocabulary and pronounciation (which I think might have been preserved orally, at least as a local dialect / variation, by few groups of speakers and unofficially survived so far)?
@prusiskataliwidasna
@prusiskataliwidasna 4 жыл бұрын
@@cius96 I see what you mean. The restored modern Prussian is actually is a rather exact version of the Prussian language of 14 - 16 cent. And mostly the language didn't evolve. For example, we still have in Prussian the accusative singular case inflexion - an Pr. anzanan "oak" Lt. ąžuolą Lv. ozolu (=uozuolu) Once the accusative sg inflexion was -an in all Baltic dialects in this case and we still have it in Prussian. Vocabulary is mostly old. But of course as old modern people we have modern words like television - tāliwidāsna (tāli "far" + widasnā "vision"). Also we have some not old words from local dialects like kalūza "prison".

@@prusiskataliwidasna that sounds great! Congratulation for keeping the language alive and spoken! (I hope wikipedia and the other official sources will recognise it's still alive as a language and it does still have some speakers... it's so sad to read "dead language" when it's technically not true). Also it's nice to know it stayed almost the same as 500 years ago! It reminds me of the case of icelandic, which is still quite close to Old Norse (except for pronounciation) unlike the other nordic languages (and they created neologisms for modern things and technology related objects aswell, instead of having loanwords; for example television is "sjónvarp", made of "sjón" = vision / sight and "varpa" = to throw / project).

Prussians were a Baltic people for several thousand years before Christianity came to their part of Europe. Before then, it is assumed they followed Baltic pagan beliefs, spoke a language more similar to the ones spoken in Latvia and Lithuania, etc. The Prussian identity was snuffed out during the Christianization, and even their language went from it's Baltic routes to a more Germanic form. Then there is such a thing - in the end of 19 cent many small languages were almost dead because major languages like German were everywhere in Europe. "ancestry" is a very complicated thing. During all these centuries people ran from Prūsa lands to all directions and settled everywhere around Prūsa lands.
