These simple questions let us understand better about certain words we don't know, so I think these questions are very practical especially in school!

Yes, and especially in a language classroom. "What does that mean?" can also be used when talking to someone if they use a word you are not familiar with.

Your onomatopoeic word I like the most is "awe". She was in awe and did not really know what to do next when she found the dead body of her husband lying on the floor all splattered in blood. It is pronounced exactly as it sounds, which makes it magnificent. Though its spelling may not help you at all ;) I'm not really sure though if that word can be used in negative situtations. Splash is another good example. Cheers! (=Thanks in UK)

Indeed, 'awe' is more common in positive situations. For example, 'She was in awe of the night sky.' Personally, I would use 'in shock' for the example you gave as 'awe' does have a positive feeling to it. 😃
