This video shows bunkai for the opening sequence of Tekki Sandan / Naihanchi Sandan kata. The video also shows how the discrete motions can be combined together into a single drill.
I am of the view that the Nidan and Sandan versions show alternative expressions of the core principles of Naihanchi Shodan (the original stand-alone kata once simply known as “Naihanchi”). Here we see variations on the limb-control and trapping methods that are first introduced in Naihanchi Shodan / Tekki Shodan.
Thanks for your support of these videos!
All the best,
Iain

You always say "uchi-uke/soto-uke, whatever you call it" but it's a very clear uchi-uke in the kata

The movement it very clear … but different styles use different terminologies. The same motion is labelled as “soto-uke” in other styles. Some call it “inner” because it starts from the “inside” (and moves “out”) others call it “outer” because it moves “outward” (but starts from the “inside”). Confusing, but that’s the way it is. So, for example, what is called “uchi-uke” in Shotokan is called “soto-uke” in Shito-Ryu (and vice-versa). Same move; different name. So that’s why I said what I said. Not because the movement itself is unclear, but because I’m teaching a group made up of differing styles who don’t have the same terminology. So to some that movement is the “soto-uke at the start of Naihanchi Sandan” and to others it is the “uchi-uke at the start of Tekki Sandan”. I hope that helps.
