I particularly liked this book as a good resource for daily reminders of the Stoic principles. Here's a short description form the author:
For anyone who has found a philosophical home in Stoicism, but still struggles to integrate the ancient lessons into their day-to-day life, this might be the book for you. Practical Stoicism is a collection of short essays to help bridge the gap between the essential teachings of the great stoic philosophers and the things we must do, in the here and now, to achieve the fulfilment they promised.
Dip into any chapter whenever you need a quick reminder of how to move your philosophy out of your head and into your life."

I suppose this isn't very stoic, but I found myself irritated and at wits end by the low level quality of videos and bad voices on KZfaq and elsewhere. But then all of a sudden, I find your channel, its high quality instructional content, and clear narrating voice. Finally. Thank you!!!

What did u do with the frustration. Did u smash your phone, laptop or tablet, did u write a letter to youtube, or did just observe the frustration and go find videos like this that are better quality?

True stoics are vegan. They’re able to use their skills to remain disciplined instead of giving in to habits which cause death to innocent animals whom we have never met and who have never committed a single evil towards us. After all, we were born vegan. We never wanted to hurt animals. We can return to our roots and be kind again.

I bought it on audible. I find your narration absolutely captivating. Like Donald Robertson. Both, concerning stoicism, violently capture the mood of the philosophy. Thank you so much for continuing your work. Mood makes or breaks a book. It remains or is lost by the speakers delivery. On this subject, no one is more fitting to do the task. You sir were born to deliver the message of the Stoics. None can move a man's heart, by words, as well as you. Well done.

Words of wisdom to follow throughout life, often easier said than done, but every day we strive to do the right thing according to stoicism, the easier it becomes, change the things we can and worry not about the things we have no control of, we all make mistakes, after all we are but human, even if only in flesh, so we struggle to understand what it means to be but human, peace!!

Review your impressions. Say to the impression: Impression is all you are, not the source of the impression. [I'm in control]. If its not in our control, be ready with the reaction (moved here). Then test and access it with your criteria, ask: is this something that is or isn't it in our control, If its not in our control [then] its none of our concern. (later in the book) It cannot touch the you that matters, but your considered [reasoned] response is yours to control. To add: I'm in the drivers seat, where I have control of my perception. Because I have partial control of my impression and I've had the right action and a response. (later in the book) Because I haven't lost my cool, I'm a better person having been responsive & I admit to the faults which I am not always the best at withholding from me. (Even later in the book) Pause, assess, then decide. Review your responses so you are even better at being able to draw from them in the correct manner. Review your stoic books, maxims, quotes, basics e.t.c so you are "Pulling the right response with minimal effort."

Idk about this sleep thing in the beginning. My take on it is that as long as you're truly asleep you actually need it. You body wouldn't let you be unconcious if it felt IT didn't need it. But a bit less sleep is not such a bad thing I guess, especially if you have to be present somewhere. It's all different if you're Just idling in bed or if you always to to bed too late.
@MM-ev1fg
@MM-ev1fg 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The body knows how much sleep to have. Best thing is to not use an alarm in the morning, and to go to sleep at an appropriate time the previous day using a good routine.

Just a question - if visualisation is so powerful in bringing things about in your life, might not it be dangerous to meditate each day on the worst outcome imaginable?
@VoxStoica
@VoxStoica 3 жыл бұрын
I'd say visualisation works by focusing your intention on a desired outcome. Negative visualisation isn't intention it's just consideration.
@jeffmejia3556
@jeffmejia3556 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with your question as I have read time and time again that your outcome is what you think about regardless of it being positive or negative. But still I believe in the power of attraction and I focus on a desirable result. Stoicism has taught me that powers beyond my control will throw obstacles to hinder my progress. What I do about those obstacles I DO have control over even if it’s only having a good attitude about it. So, in short, visualize a positive outcome, but in the reality of life “expect everything” and “ be ready for anything”.

Umm, as far as Stoics go, try this: doing the right thing, the right way. Then turn around and let the right way illuminate what is to be illuminated, and eliminate what is to be eliminated. On the spot, as the teachers say. Thanks.
