What I've done is: 1) I set a 1h limit per day for all "bad" apps in built-in Screen Time settings on my iPhone (under App Limits). Meaning that if I, for example, watch KZfaq for 1h, then I am locked out from other "bad" apps for the day. Forces me to prioritise (but usually just ends up 1h of KZfaq and 0 to everything else lol). 2) Then I also set Downtime between 11pm & 8am, meaning all "bad" apps will be locked out no matter what between those hours. 3) Then I got my GF to set the Screen Time Passcode to something I don't know. That means that if I will run out of App time (#1) or will be trying to snoop around on my phone at night (#2) I will have to get her to unlock the phone for me. And usually I have too much pride & shame to ask her, so I don't. This setup is free & doesn't require any apps for anyone who already has an iPhone & a partner. Result after about 4 months: I barely look at my phone anymore, since it practically useless (only thing I do is read business emails, but never reply from the phone) & have read about 9 books that have been hanging in my "To Read" checklist for years.

To break my habit of playing Overwatch, I changed the password AND the email address. I gave both to my mom. Now if I want to play Overwatch, it better be a damn good reason, because I'll have to go to my "mommy" and ask. Considering I'm a 30 year old man, this was a very effective method, which has worked perfectly.

Thanks to him making me righteous with his righteousness I have overcome the urge to want to watch pornography after I proclaimed my righteousness through faith in Jesus while watching it. After I did that act of faith it actually set me free from this hold this urge that had me keep watching porn even though I obviously didn't feel good about it anymore after being in a relationship with Jesus as he changed me from the inside and he made me holy. He sure is a loving one, he never yelled at me, he never made me feel terrible even though I am obviously failing being sinless over here, but thanks to his blood paying for all my sins I have been forgiven of all that I am (eph 1:7), such a good God that loves us so much that he sent his only begotten son to die for us so that whosoever believes on him shall not perish for Jesus is RESURRECTED !!!...

I haven't used Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or any social media since 2011. I feel like I have no friends. @alatharrii

I think that's one of the problems, logging off social platforms makes you miss out on a lot of activities or events with your friends and not everyone has the money to get credit to constantly call or send messages (at least where I live).
@11northtexas

@@alatharrii yeah... but I think we kinda know too much. By that, I mean we are aware of far more than anyone was even 20 years ago. So it's kind of hard

Amazing advice! 😎I'm a big proponent of less internet! I use the app you mentioned called "Focus Me" on the phone and computer. My husband has the password... it's brutal, but beautiful.😄 Getting a regular alarm clock gives no excuse for having the phone in the bedroom. We bought dumb phones on Amazon and used them for 2 months. ☎️It was great except taking pictures with a smart phone is so easy (and texting is way easier). Now we've scaled back and do "no phone Sundays"... usually.😜
@PwnageFury
@PwnageFury 5 жыл бұрын
Great video! I agree with a lot of these. My husband leaves tons of notifications on but he ignores them. I can't. I changed all my sounds so I would stop reacting to every bing and ping his phone makes. Anything that wants to send me notifications needs to prove its value first. I use the BedTime feature on the iPhone and like that it plays a little tune to remind me to go to bed. I also took FB off all my devices and only use it on my computer. I try to logout each time I finish with it. It really helps. Finally... getting a watch that notifies me really helps. With two young adult children and several elderly relatives a was/am on call for, knowing my watch would notify me helped me stop checking compulsively. Keep up the great work.

One thing that helped me with KZfaq was to never sign up for notifications and to unsubscribe from nearly every channel and instead rely on my feed for random stuff related to what I've watched. If something shows up that I'm not interested in, I'll mark them "Not Interested" and use the "Tell Us Why" button to mark that I'm not interested in the channel or video (or that I've seen it already). It goes against what this channel would want, but it helped me keep from wasting so much time on youtube and my recommended videos end up being more interesting.

I have a dumb phone! It's great. Also very satisfying to slap it shut. (I'm nearly thirty and I've never owned a smartphone. I don't know what kind of person that makes me, but I'm not mad about it.) Then you can supplement that with an iPad (for checking emails and other stuff), but make sure you only get on with 16GB so you won't have any space to download anything, and the apps that you do have space for, well, you'll only be able to use if you can find free wifi or the permission to use someone's smartphone to hot spot.

I graduated in '95, so I am able to reminisce the 90's as a teen. I was much more sociable then, since I had to seek social interaction, physically. The strange bit though, is that for many years now, since I returned from living out of state back to where I'd grown up...is that I purposefully avoid the people I used to seek regular, steady interactions with. The internet doesn't provide same level of bonding possible between two people as does the physical interaction, but it does have its ups. I can change my mind instantaneously without wasting time. I do like that about the internet age.

Like everyone I struggle with this, but here are some tips that have worked for me: 1. Don't have a smart phone. My old dumb phone works fine for calls and texts but not for social media. 2. Use a Chromebook (or similar) for working. It's super simple and has all I need for work (Google slides / docs and internet) 3. Turn off the wifi at night. In the morning I get some time to myself before family wakes up, I drink coffee, read a book and / or meditate. I am not tempted to turn the wifi until everyone wakes up. Having a few hours every day without access to internet helps my mind to wander freely. 4. Re-instate the concept of sabbath. Have one day per week when you have an internet-free day. Try to do nice things on this day: go for a walk, buy a coffee out, that sort of thing. That's it.

Wasting time on the phone isn't a big deal if you balance it out with life and normal things. I might be a tad burned out on social media because I constantly have to manage a youtube channel but I could care less about looking at instagram or twitter. If I'm looking at those things its because i actually have time to waste. Facebook is dead, I use it only to buy and sell used stuff locally. So aside from the blumpkin worth of youtube I watch instead of any sort of normal TV I think I'm good. Maybe that's just my specific age category of 35? All my friends are too busy being parents to waste time on facebook or instagram.

I never have any notifications on and for me turning them back on helped. I don't have many friends, I don't get a lot of notifications. When they were off, I would check my phone regularly to see if I had a message and usually I didn't but then I stayed on my phone. Now I only have to look at my phone when I actually have a notification to look at!

i recently started using Forest again and it's helping a lot... kind of sad how i need the prospect of digital trees to motivate me to experience life without my phone, but...

I like the book idea. I spend at least an hour or two on my phone in bed before I go to sleep and after I wake up. I'll just have to get an alarm clock because my phone has always been my go-to alarm as well.

Remember when you looked forward to going home and opening that door just to see the " blinking number" on the phone machine ?? ( talking 3 decades now) Funny today I LOVE seeing NO messages on the cell.... back then a blinking 2 was bad ! anything 4 or more was EXCITING as it gets

You're a funny guy. And I like the message. I quit using social media completely, except for KZfaq. No more Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and LinkedIn. And boy, I do not miss it at all! Do I miss out on some stuff that my friends share online? Sure. Do I mind? Hell no. There turns out to be this magical real-life world that's awesome and stimulating and rewarding.

I find it easy to stay focused on my computer, but hard on my phone. My rule is if I want to check social media, I have to get up and go to another room. That energy has cut out a lot of phone checks that were just from boredom.

I was always going on puzzle type game apps instead of actually watching whatever I had on the computer, I decided to just uninstall all of those apps and so far I haven't gone back and I don't really miss any of them - just proving I didn't need to be doing it in the first place!
