QRM or RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) can play havoc with your ability to hear weak signals on Ham Radio. In this video myself and TheSmokinApe discuss how you can narrow down the sources of interference and what you can do about them.

Great stories and knowledge gained. I installed an alarm in a friend's place 30yrs ago but it triggered at 3am to 4am every morning, regardless of whether it was armed or not and only way to stop it was to unplug it and disconnect the battery. After many days wasted, replacing boards, testing, adding shielding etc, I was tipped by the manufacturer to file a radio complaint with acma or the equivalent authority back then. They sent inspectors around to test/triangulate and found a licenced ham radio operator with an illegal power amp transmitting to someone around the world just a few streets away between 3 to 4am. Lol. That's all I was told, I didn't know details but they fined him and took his illegal equipment away.... problem solved. The alarm was all hard wired, not wireless, all the cabling acted as an antenna and caused chaos every day. The cable we used was not shielded, alarm cable here is not shielded. I wrapped the panel in foil that was grounded but it didn't work. I didn't know about chokes or what the cause was before that but was soooo glad it was resolved. RF is like electricity, you can't see it coming and it can kill you. Or cause lots of drama!... plumbers just get wet if there is a fault. Lol. Should have just had an office job. Lol😄🍺👍🇦🇺

as I understand it, you can change the frequency of the crane controller but they often revert to the default frequency (presumaby when turned off) so the problem comes back. These days you use CTCSS to set a tone.

10 khz spikes may very well be a solar MPPT controller... I have the same problem and it goes away when I switch it off... Haven't been able to get rid of it either.

Thanks Hayden, that was quite interesting. I know what you mean about the 70cm problems, I had a problem a few years ago where my 20mW DMR hotspot caused issues for the QLD fire and rescue (station immediately behind me) truck opener, completely unknown to me until I had a call from the ACMA inspector. I was receiving the local ATV repeater on 446 MHz, so I ran my hotspot on 433.5 MHz to lessen the impact on the TV receiver. Anyway the fire guys had trouble a couple of times opening the their truck when the had a callout. ACMA wasn’t impressed when I suggested that interference to LIPD could be from someone driving down the road while talking on the repeater or similar. Anyway I changed frequency slightly and I’m not aware of any further problems. All this for a 20mW hotspot…

Wow, 20mW! That’s pretty low power to be stopping their opener. Must have been smack on their frequency. Anyway good you managed to resolve it!

Great informative video. I have ferrite clamps on everything around the house, not just ham gear. I did have street mains noise when it rained, inspector tracked it down to a bad insulator miles away, that is now fixed. But just walk round any house with a pocket am radio, and listen to the stuff we have to put up with from most electrical items. A separate rx ant helps. Cheers guys, good to highlight these issues. 73

So what was it? 16 minutes of you chasing around for it, but what did you discover? Entertaining, but how does this help me find the problem in MY house?

Hammap - I was wondering if there was any way to look up hams in your area. As a new ham could be useful for things like help with interference. (Although, I'm pretty sure in my small town there's only one ham, and soon to be 2 (me. exam passed, just waiting for the paperwork etc). Funny how you start spotting antennas....

In Australia we have the ACMA database where we can search by postcode… in the US you could use the FCC lookup database too

Sadly those filters really only work on 160&80 when you go into the higher freq. it’s rare that a AM signal/harmonic or mixing will effect 7mhz or higher freq. but bring that Morgan filter when operating closer to transmit tower sites. Those filters really help the icoms n other SDRs esp when close to Tx sites. I use one to try and knock down a mixing issue I have here. I have 3 sites within 3 miles of me one 50kw all time, one to my north 10kw day only when I get the mixing, I get a 30khz of white noise centered on 1.920 and it’s 60/80db strong signal which kill 1.930 at 7am on weekends. Other wise I work past power down. So it really doesn’t bother me. Thankfully
