This was always my dream piece. Graduated from the Royal College of music in 2014, started learning it....Got about about two thirds through the first movement and fell over at an outdoor theatre and absolutely wrecked my wrists. Classical career over. Still not right after 6 years. Thankfully I can still play bits here and there but nowhere near what I used to. I’d give anything to be able to play like I used to again. Maybe one day eh? Make the most of every second because you never know what the future holds - look after your hands and don’t fall over haha

A similar thing happened to me so I get how frustrating and upsetting it can be😕 I hope one day you’ll return to your former glory ! When I was 19 I broke both of my wrists and my shoulder in a car accident and I tried to keep playing even when my arms were in plaster casts... (younger me was stupid) I was so scared that I would lose muscle memory and suddenly just forget how to play that I ended up doing even more damage. 4 years later and I’m still not playing the same so I understand the struggle, but I think back to how frustrated I was when i couldn’t even reach an octave right back at the beginning and I’m pretty proud of how far I’ve come!

@@maddiespurgin1676 thank you Maddie, The secret is never giving up finding a fix. I’m still in the road to finding the 100% fix, but will keep going until we sort it. I’m lucky enough to be able to conduct orchestras and musically direct without being affected by the pain ( and teach ) so there’s always alternatives but playing piano is my first love. Patrick McDermott she doesn’t always make obvious mistakes, maybe her timing is off or she feels more comfortable using different fingers for certain passages, or perhaps she just needs to repeat a passage a few times to memorize it, or it could also be that she needs to accentuate more the dynamics (f, ff, p, pp ecc...)

This is actually one of the most encouraging videos on KZfaq about playing the piano. It is encouraging to see that I am not the only one who makes mistakes while learning a piece and I am nowhere in the class of these classically trained pianists. People who do not play piano do not realize how difficult these piano busters are from Chopin or Rachmaninoff because the great pianists make it look so easy...but it is not. Watch Jonah Ho and see one of the most incredible prodigy performances you will see of an eight years old playing some of the most difficult compositions going to perfection and you have to wonder if he started practicing in the womb At least after watching this video of the learning curve, I will no longer consider giving up learning how to play classical music just because I make so many mistakes while I learn

@@guitarguy4372 Actually often enough, I compare myself to classical performances, and get frustrated when my tone isn't as perfect. It isn't absurd to think that everybody doesn't make mistakes, especially if you are watching prepared pieces being performed in concert halls, or in recording studios. This video is great, because it provided the some insight of what the process looks like, rather than the end goal.

Honestly these are my favorite Tiffany! I may not be as interesting to non-musicians, but this so perfectly shows the struggle that is real practice. Playing the same phrase over and over for what feels like eternity before everything locks in and you just "get it". So many people assume it just happens out of nowhere because of "talent"

I love watching the practice routines of people who are the absolute master of something -- piano, sports, whatever. You see their passion, their OCD, their attempts at mastering something to absolute perfection. No matter how gifted someone might be, there is still an enormous amount of work and practice at these highest levels of skill.

Thanks for letting us in on the process of acquiring mastery of a world class concerto to be performed at the professional level! Discipline, patience, focus, REPETITION, clarity, total absorption of mind and body and THEN, the passion, musicality, emotion, artistry, insight, communication and intimate connection to the audience........... What a gift of hard work, analysis and understanding to share with and captivate your audience! It's a miracle from our end. Thank you. For whatever it may be worth, my mother was an honors graduate in choral conducting and piano at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois in the late 1930's. One notable experience happened at one of her juries during her Jr. year. The three professors applauded when she finished playing. Unheard of in those days AND still isn't now-days either. My sister won a full-tuition harp scholarship to the Eastman School music, became the harp faculty at the Denver University, first call union harpist, and played with the Denver Symphony. She has been married for forty years to a cellist who received his master's and doctorate degrees also from Northwestern University and recently retired from the Denver Symphony after 34yrs and after 25 years in the Central City Opera Orchestra in the Rockies just west of Denver. I have a son who has gone over to the "dark" side and is now a music education major (clarinet is his main instrument). The "curse" of music........... I had a successful clarinet/sax studio for forty yrs.(my best clarinet student won the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra concerto competion performing from memory, as a high school senior, the Carl Nielson Clarinet Concerto) and sang with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra for thirty yrs. Including performing the Mahler's Symphony #8 once with them and twice with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of James Levine for the season opening concert at Ravinia in the Northshore suburbs of Chicago to audiences of 14,000 (4,000 of them under the amphitheater all dressed in tuxedos and furs) and the rest sitting on the attendant sculpture garden lawns. Very much enjoyed experiencing the practice methodology for preparing a work for performance!
