My teacher, Ruggiero Ricci, when asked how he is able to play the impossible, replied he makes his practicing more difficult to then be able to play the impossible effortlessly. This is brilliantly demonstrated in this video. Happy practicing everyone!

While this is among my favorite Ravel, I've always though it so insanely difficult that only the demonically possessed would be capable of the task. Your brilliant tutorial shows how those with real talent can manage it. While I'll never play this gorgeous piece myself, your examples have given me an unexpected window into how to listen and better appreciate the music's complexity and, to my surprise, its lucidity.

@@pianomosaic You're welcome! I was wondering what version of the sheet music are you using? There seems to be a few deviations from the sheet music I am working with. Also, how long did you work on this piece and what will you do next? Finally, between Jeux D'eau and Ondine, which do you think is tougher? Thank you for your time!
@pianomosaic
@pianomosaic 3 жыл бұрын
@@wasumyon6147 I have several editions but the main one I use is the Roger Nichols Edition (Peters). But the extracts I wrote are not complete copies of any other edition. To be concise I left out lots of things like dynamics and some slurs. This piece and I have quite a long history. I learned it many years ago but wasn't satisfied with the standard I reached. After a long break, I picked it up again last year, armed with a lot more experience and tricks. Only now did I really feel comfortable with it technically. I definitely think Ondine is harder than Jeux d'eau. It's absolutely extreme. Not just the playing of the notes but the sounds one must produce with them. All while not even getting virtuosic or showy. Just subtle moods and ambient impressions floating around. Right now I'm enjoying working on a Fugue again but the plan is to revise Une barque and make a video on that too as many people have asked for that. Also want to do that with Chopin's op 10 no 1

I've been waiting for that type of content for so long, and especially on that piece! I find that those initial chords are very much dependent on the piano action. It needs to be very light, and repetition needs to work from the bottom of the key too. Are you demonstrating on a digital piano?

Thanks for sharing this awesome video with us Adrian :) I wanted to ask you, why in bars 88 and following you suggest to cross the hands, as in 12:35 ? Especially since in your own interpretation you used the conventional way. And do you have any more tips for coping with the polyrhythm in the climax section? Thanks a lot in advance!! PS. Love your shirt :)
@pianomosaic
@pianomosaic 3 жыл бұрын
Oh that's just an exercise and absolutely not a suggestion to perform. Perhaps I should have been more explicit about that. With such polyrhythms, there are two general approaches you can take: 1) Work out, note for note, which hand comes when exactly, and then do it very slowly (perhaps in small fragments first) until the fingers start to "get the message". Or 2) You can fake it by altering the rhythm slightly so it's more manageable. For example 6 against 7 can be turned into 2 against 3 and then 4 together. You can also then change the order up. It's pretty close and once you play up to speed, it's not so much about rhythmic precision as it is just about getting all the sonorities. Perhaps think of them like giant chords. thx :)
@adriankornblum1874
@adriankornblum1874 3 жыл бұрын
@@pianomosaic Thanks for your answer! So regarding the polyrhythm you would recommend to play the first notes as 2 against 3, and the rest simply together right? How would you do it when you have 6 against 5 or 7 against 5, which also occurs in the climax? Thanks again for your kindness, this passage really challenges me a lot :(
@pianomosaic
@pianomosaic 3 жыл бұрын
@@adriankornblum1874 That's one way of getting into it. Once that works ok, you can then shift it towards a bit more accuracy, or you could try another one like play the first four together and then 2 against 3. With 6v5 you could also do 2v3 and then 3 together (or the other way round). I also found it very difficult. Many people say it's not so bad but my experience was different. I kept hitting wrong notes there when playing through the whole piece.
