These enormous tractors were built to break the prairie sod. Unfortunately, that only needed to be done once, after which these awkward machines were less useful, and replaced by much smaller tractors until recently.
Much of the strangeness is about avoiding other manufacturers" patents.
Possibly the strangest is the light green International Harvester 30-60 Mogul - 2 cylinder opposed piston engine, friction drive instead of gears, and a friction drive pony start.
