The three most mysterious objects in the Universe !
1 - Oumuamua
Since the rock was the first interstellar object ever spotted in our solar system, the scientists called it Oumuamua - a Hawaiian word meaning either “scout” or “messenger sent from the distant past to reach out to us.” But they had no idea where it came from. And they still don’t know whether it was truly an asteroid, or something more closely resembling a comet.
In 2018, the mystery of Oumuamua deepened further. After slingshotting around the sun with enough speed to overcome the grasp of its gravity, it did something a bit unexpected: It sped up, propelled by some inexplicable force.
So what is ‘Oumuamua? At first, astronomers reckoned it was an asteroid, but a closer look at its motion threw up something strange: the Sun’s gravity was not the only thing affecting its trajectory through space. This prompted some researchers, including Prof Avi Loeb at Harvard University, to suggest it could be an alien space probe. If it had a solar sail attached, pressure from the solar wind could be helping to blow it off-course.
But this idea has received a backlash from most quarters, and the object is more likely to be something entirely natural. “Most of the evidence points towards a comet,” says Dr Colin Snodgrass, an astronomer at the Open University. Little jets of gas, caused when the comet’s ice is warmed by the Sun, could be nudging it off its natural gravitational course.
“It has some unusual properties compared with comets from our Solar System, though,” adds Snodgrass. “We are still trying to figure out what causes these.” Typically, comets reflect about 4 per cent of the light that falls on them. ‘Oumuamua is more than twice as reflective. Unfortunately, our chance for more observations is now over. ‘Oumuamua has fled into the outer Solar System, journeying past Jupiter on a trajectory that will eventually see it leave our neighbourhood altogether. It’s already too faint to see. Yet the controversy and ideas around this mysterious object continue to confound astronomers.
2 - Tabby's star
The mystery began in 2011, when citizen scientists with the Planet Hunters project were sorting through data from NASA’s Kepler spacecraft, which spotted the signatures of more than 2,300 planets during its four years of primary observations. As planets pass between their stars and Earth, they cause brief and predictable blips in their stars’ light.
But the dips Kepler recorded from Tabby’s star didn’t correspond to anything remotely like a planet’s shadowy fingerprint. Instead, they appeared to be more intense and almost entirely random. Once alerted to the star, formally called KIC 8462852, astronomers couldn’t come up with a reasonable explanation for what they saw.It just wasn’t behaving like any other star in the sky - and the strange dimming events were only part of the puzzle.
Hypotheses ranged from a swarm of comets orbiting the star, to a dusty debris disk surrounding a black hole between the star and Earth, to material within our own solar system, stellar fluctuations in Tabby’s Star, and finally, alien megastructures.
3- Boötes Void
The Boötes Void is a giant hole in the universe some 350 million light years across, a place where galaxies, for the most part, never formed. It lies about a billion light years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Boötes, after which it was named when it was discovered in 1981 by Robert Kirshner of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and colleagues.
What makes this expanse of nothingness so interesting? The very existence of the Boötes Void is a mystery, one that is challenging our standard story of the universe’s past. The pattern of galaxies and voids is thought to arise from tiny quantum fluctuations in the fabric of space-time at nearly the beginning of time that have been stretched to galactic proportions as the universe expanded.
