Greg Bashaw I’m new to the mantis world. Hatched an egg sack and had a ton of cannibalism. Then my last survivor was bitten by a spider that somehow snuck into his cage with the insects i got for him. I have much to learn. Thanks for the vids. I will learn from you before I try again

When I was little I found a mantis egg sac and thought it was a butterfly chrysalis and brought it inside. It hatched in the house. There were itty bitty mantis babies everywhere for weeks. I felt so bad because they kept getting accidently squished by my family. everytime i found one I brought it outside where I found them. But I loved them ever since.

Mantis' are awesome. I saved one that was baking on the hot plastic of our garbage bin outside. He's probably the size of my thumb nail. Gave him a nice set up in a mason jar w/ dirt and twigs for him to hang. Well, we dont actually know if its a boy or a girl, but we named him Howard (after Howard Stern). Howards been eating ants on the reg so far. He has gotten slightly bigger.

I suggest you feed it flying insects because that is what they eat more in nature. I heard ants can be dangerous. You can buy them or just catch them yourself for free. Put some fruit in a container and leave it out to rot. The day after close the lid and put it in the freezer for 5 minutes. The flies will be temporarily frozen so they are easy to handle. Put a couple in with your mantis and after a couple of minutes the flies start moving again and the mantis will grab them when hungry. Easy and free...... Mine is eating wasps now cause that's the insect that I seem to catch the most.

Awe I feel much better knowing that they tend to fall when they get older She had been hanging upside down and one night was shaking and fell a couple times but was fine in the morning we went for our window walk to catch flies and get a sun bath She was eating many flies a day even ate 6 that day We interacted through out the day every time I came in my room A lapse of 2 hours and when I had returned she had fallen face first to the bottom of the enclose and was dead It was unexpected because she was just fine active and walking on me and eating I had a table top heater outside the enclosure and a lizard pad to keep warm and always kept humidity up But I thought the heat had maybe killed her I could not get any info on end of life symptoms So thank you

Great vid! Just a suggestion: The fake plant you have is incredibly smooth and makes it really hard for a mantis to grip onto..so I would suggest either getting another fake plant with ridges or just put branches in the enclosure so they don't have to struggle so much trying to climb..especially since your pet enclosure isn't mantis friendly due to it having smooth plastic walls. In the wild they would never hang on to a smooth plant..they need texture to grip on.

I'm pretty sure that's a female because of the swollen abdomen. Males never have an abdomen that large and the wings are the more prominent part of their back, while the abdomen is the more prominent part of the female's back.
@Clauriffo
@Clauriffo 6 жыл бұрын
If you want to know for sure count the body segments. Females have 5 and males have more. The big abdomen and big wings are also signs to recognize a female. Males are skinnier and smaller wings with 6 to 8 body segments.

@RupertRumble
@RupertRumble 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. They have 1 ear located in between their legs, I don't know much about how that works for them. The bouncing is usually attributed to making themselves appear as a branch in the breeze for their prey or when they might be nervous in the presence of a potential predator. I would love to know more and think it has to do with them enjoying music through their senses.

I had a giant praying mantis pet about 2 years ago. He became a beautiful green male. He always tried to climb on top of head or my glasses lol. He lived I think around half a year after his last mold. It was veeery painful to see him during his last weeks and days, as he slowly began to lose ends of his limbs (I i thought it was due to the crickets in the enclosure that bit them off at first.. since like the uploader i liked to have a few in there, so he could hunt them whenever he wanted), slowed down, finally lost orientation and couldn't climb anymore. For around 2 days before dying he'd just lay there and his legs would still move, but continuously less and less. Around that time his mouth stopped moving altogether, so he couldn't eat or drink anymore. It was the slowest death I've witnessed so far. And it was very sad and heartbreaking not being able to help him or at least give him a quick pain-free death, as I don't know how to. I would like to get another giant mantis one day, as I loved that guy so much, but idk what to feed it, so that the food doesn't become dangerous to him one day. My guy didn't hunt much for mealworms unfortunately.. and the pet stores where I live don't sell any other feeding insects that can be fed to an adult mantis.

I’m thinking about getting one and have a few questions can anyone answer them? (I’m going to put them in number order for an easier read) 1 can you used bottle water with mantises (spray their cage etc.) 2 How big of an enclosure do they need 3 Can they eat like only meal worms or will that hurt them? 4 How often can you handle them/ when could you start handling them 5 Which species are calmer and more docile (fits my life a bit better and would be all around easier for me)
@ashleyhochstein936
@ashleyhochstein936 5 жыл бұрын
1 yes. 2 Depends on the species. safe bet is 3 times its length wide by 3 times its length tall as a minimum. 3 as nymphs, you will need to start with fruit flies or flightless fruit flies. Some mantids are picky with their food, and having a varied diet is the best way to have a healthy mantis. If you do not have access locally, places like josh's frog's has a wild variety and will ship. 4 you can handle them from birth, but they are fragile. They run and jump. I would recommend waiting until after the first or second molt to do a lot of handling. Otherwise, early handling seems to cause a more friendly mantis. 5 Try the Ghost Mantis. They are very docile. If you are on Facebook, look up the group Mantis Keepers. You can find information, as well as people selling and trading nymphs and feeder insects.

Any new mantis owners, this information is outdated. Tank should always be the twice the length of your mantis in length and width, and three times the length of your mantis in height. Never leave crickets in with your mantis constantly, they can hurt and even kill your mantis. Feeding your mantis every day is terrible if they're an adult. Nymphs can be fed everyday, but you'll gradually feed them less frequently after each molt and adults will only need to be fed once every 3-5 days.

Get another one, I don't know what makes them so friendly but it could just be the type of mantis. I know some are especially skittish and scared of everything, but mine loves being picked up and will always try to climb onto my hand whenever I do anything inside where it stays. I think they're fairly smart so I guess after seeing you give it food and such it'll learn to trust you.

Well pet mantises live longer In their natural environment which is probably someone's backyard Praying mantises usually lay their eggs and then promptly die 2 weeks later They're lucky to make it past Halloween if they survive the cold and the fact that there are no more insects outside If you keep them as a pet you're able to skip that part With plenty of food and proper care and a nice enclosure a pet praying mantis is able to live well past Christmas

And they actually will drink water from a bowl If you put a mantis Lyra bowl or fill up the sink with water and let the magistrate next to it it was take the opportunity to drink it If you give a mantis a water bowl they won't drink it all like a dog or cat but they would be grateful to get out of water Drinking water is an opportunity they don't get very often in the wild The reason you don't see praying mantises drinking from a watering hole is it because they can't drink water or don't like it Pepitas mantises and other insects are quite vulnerable when they do this A praying mantis would probably be unaware of approaching Danger when leaning down into a puddle to quench their thirst When a praying mantis is drinking water from" say a backyard pond it won't be able to notice large frog swimming nearby or the bird approaching it from behind so they don't actively go searching for water but when they come across it they will drink it Is the praying mantis gets used to its new home I can feel safe then it will definitely drink water when provided and we will appreciate the opportunity they don't get in nature

So I have a question. I plan on getting a mantis as a pet. Would all the steps you showed on here work for a Orchid Mantis? I know they're the same species. But not sure if they live the same. Any tips? Also great content keep it up!

My cat was fixing to eat a mantis so I took a bowl and placed it in there because I didn't wanna scare it but it decided to go on my hand. I placed her on a plant because I don't have an enclosure but 5 hours later she was there waiting so I'm gonna find something for her.

I found my mantis dead in its water bowl this morning, face in and not moving. I fished it out & it v slowly regained consciousness so I put it in a smaller container upside down to hopefully dry off. I looked 10 minutes later and it started Malting! I then realised it may have deliberately drenched itself in water before shedding. I have left it alone upside down. I’m tempted to “help” it shed its skin by cutting off the dead one dangling down and using tweezers for the body. Do you advise this or not?

Definitely not. ‘Helping’ it can result in a major mismolt which is actually fatal in many cases.

You don't really need a water bowl in their enclosure. Depending on what you feed them, they can collect their water consumption via their food. You should be misting the enclosure regularly. They have been known to drink a drop of water off a branch. The mist is to provide humidity to help with the molting process so they can get out easier. Even if you see an issue arise during the process you should leave them to it. You can't do much to help. Depending on the issue, like if they fall during the process, loose part of a limp coming out, getting stuck, etc. But most of that can be avoided with proper care!

My boyfriend gave me a small Carolina mantis, she lives on a tree in my room and in the evening I put her in one of those butterfly hatchery net things and feed her crickets, mealworms from my darkling beetle enclosure, and I’ve seen her snag a fruit fly off of the tree. I also must around where she’s hanging on the tree every now and then. I plan on getting any future mantises I get a critter keeper, but should I make it a priority to get her one right now?

I'm raising Mediterranean Mantids from birth. A surprising number of them are dying. I think the problem may be their inability to digest food. One just ate a fly for more than an hour and its abdomen doesn't seem to show any food in it. It's like it's not fully swallowing the fly and can't finish eating it, as if it's like a human being trying to eat a hamburger with no liquid to wash it down. I'm in Las Vegas. They've survived 120 degrees and months without rain. I was told that they didn't need to drink any water because they got enough from their food, so I haven't been giving them any water. They don't seem to be molting as often as I had expected. Could lack of water explain their difficulty molting and swallowing?

Definitely! Also humidity is very important for the molting process

Ok you have a Carolina Mantis (I have 6 of them😊). If it isn't moving it is probably almost ready to molt or its waiting for food. The Carolina Mantis isn't a very active Mantis and enjoy staying in hiding. But he/she will probably be ok😊

This was helpful video. I have a pet mantis from our back yard. I keep the tank around 70 degrees and moist 1x day.it is fall now so she just laid a sac of eggs. It has been one day the sac is on the branch in tank. I am not sure what to do. I read to take the branch out, put it in its own tank and leave it in the (unheated) garage until Spring. Is this the right thing to do? Please help!

Is the live plant okay just in eco earth? How do u keep the plant healthy? I'm thinking fertilizer, but that may harm the mantis. Idk if that's safe for them. Maybe keep the plant in a pot and bury it in the eco earth so they dont get to the potting soil. The wheels are turning.

I have Hedera hibernica in all my enclosures. Growes great, easily cut a peace off and stick it where you want it to grow. Use it for my tarantulas and my mantis. Always remember that a cricket could eat the plant and poison the animal so make a educated choice
