Enjoy my review of a big box store stained glass kit. Spoiler alert - it's a little frustrating, but the end result is cute.

I am glad I watched your video! I want to start doing stained glass and was going to purchase this kit as a beginner-beginner......well maybe I will just create my own little design and start that way

I will say, of all the kits that I've seen, this one is probably the least problematic in terms of design, but definitely frustrating if you don't have a grinder.

The sad thing is, someone completely new who wants to try their hand at stained glass art might start out trying one of these kits and get so frustrated if/when it doesn't turn out well they'll give it up altogether. Potential stained glass artists could be lost who could have excelled in the craft and carried it on to the next generation. You're right....the kit should have at least included a full size pattern to match the glass pieces to and a simple method of smoothing down the glass edges for a better fit up and secure foiling, along with a little better quality in the materials.

Agreed! I was also looking at some of the more expensive kits from JoAnn's, but those looked even more frustrating, cause each one had ridiculous glass shapes that must have been cut with a water-jet. It was almost comical. Maybe I'll still get one of those, so you all can watch me suffer 😅

@@SamanthaAshleyGlass "you all can watch me suffer" LOL When an experienced glass artist like yourself has to struggle with getting the finished kit to turn out decently, you know what the results are going to be with most novices.

I find I personally don't like kits. You did a great job on this one. 🤗

You do need to buy a soldering iron to do these kits and it helps if you do have a grinder. And I think the flux is like bacon fat or crisco, or it was last year. It looks like they might have changed it. The $20 at least covered the cost of the glass, but I personally didn't like the glass they provided.

Lol, that's so gross about the flux - this batch definitely seemed like normal gel flux. I was also annoyed that the cover photo used iridescent glass, but we didn't get iridescent glass in the kit. The box says "the color of glass may vary," but I feel like if they showed iridescent glass, they should have given iridescent glass.

@@SamanthaAshleyGlass Yup. I forgot which one I purchased, and brought back. I figured it would be at least worth the glass. For a person that likes transparent and irridized glass, not so much opaque, it was all opaque, even the irridized glass. There was one glass that was translucent. I didn't like the glass even enough to keep it. I've seen two other videos of people doing a kit, yours definitely turned out the best. It wound up not even looking like a 'kit'. So, great work taking your time and making it look good. 🙂

Great Job, what do you use under the glass when grinding? 😊 thanks for the demonstration because of you I will give it a go for the heck of it. 😅

The matte spots are from impurities in the solder. Thnk of it like not all 14K gold is alike, the other metal from one piece of jewelry to another can be different.

Ahh thanks for the info! Makes sense, lower quality solder to keep the cost of the kit down

I can't believe that is hand cut. The pre-cut kits I've bought were cut on a water-jet. They still needed grinding though. I wondered about the solder too. It didn't look like 60/40, but didn't act like lead-free either. The one time I used lead-free solder, it didn't flow well at all. In the end, you were successful. That piece does look really good.

I think the more expensive kits from Michael's and Joanne's are cut on a water-jet? The one thing I actually liked in this kit was the flux. I wish I knew what it was, cause it worked great, and cleaned up really easily.

I've watched different videos of people trying these kits and yours turned out so much better. I think a few things in the box were different, like a more liquid flux, and a lead mixed solder. Overall, I enjoyed watching your video more, since you didn't just whine and complain the whole time.

Haha thanks, I had to keep reminding myself that it was only $20, and I was determined to see if I could make it look good, but I still wanted to convey the quality of materials in the kit. I'm definitely going to get one of the more complex kits from JoAnn's and try that out.

Hey Samantha, what temp do you set your Hakko at?
@SamanthaAshleyGlass
@SamanthaAshleyGlass 4 ай бұрын
It depends on the tip I'm using. I used the 5mm tip here, so I set my iron to 360°c, but when I'm using my 3mm tip, I solder at 410°c
