Pre-EQ Before BOSS SY-1

The culmination of all my pre-EQ experimentation with the SY-1, SY-200 and SY-300 to track full chords, arpeggios and leads better. As a subtractive synth pedal, the BOSS Guitar Synthesizer uses an internal compressor to follow the dominant frequency at the expense of higher notes. This trick with an EQ before your SY solves everything.

I just got one a week ago and was kinda disappointed with it. This has solved that problem. I will have to try it next time I mess with it.

GT-1000 (Core) has plenty of EQ blocks to spare so you wouldn't even need a separate EQ pedal, making this trick even more convenient and useful. Thanks for sharing

@@GreenhamGuitar it’s a doozy of a UI but it can run some insane signal chains for its size. My SY-200 is one of the GT’s loops and I’m using this trick on every patch where my synth does chords, so this vid really helped me a lot. Thanks for all the creative stuff you share

Follow up: Besides this trick, adding a compressor before the synth will add an incredible amount of sustain on notes and chords. Used both an EQ and compressor today before the SY-1 and it made up for everything I felt it was lacking. Anyone out there, try it out!!!

Hey thanks! We've almost perfected it! 😁 May I just emphasize what you said - that you need both! A compressor before the SY without the EQ only exacerbates the low-note dominance problem. I thought that my Mooer Yellow Comp (which has a "tone" knob for EQ) could brighten the EQ and add sustain, but it didn't do the trick. If you don't shave off 100hz and boost 1000hz then you're still stuck in the mud. Anyway, lemme know what else you learn and thanks again!

SY200 user. I find the pedal too dynamic and too biased to lower frequencies when doing single note lines. Above 12th fret high E is very unreliable. I use it in a covers band setting, so i don't want to spend pedalboard space fixing it with extra pedals. Going to try the TS trick, since that's on my board anyway. I feel this pedal is in need of a firmware update, or at least user tuneable EQ/sensitivity settings.

I agree! They definitely could have learnt from the SY-1 before releasing the 200, or new firmware by now. My SY-300 does allow you to reduce the dynamic response from lower vs higher notes independently, but overall that doesn't fix the way it will drown out higher frequencies (and therefore higher notes) when playing full chords, so I still use a TS or EQ before it. The 4 FX slots in the SY-300 can also replace many pedals, so depending on what you're covering, it's amazing. You may find that the TS or EQ makes the SY-200 so much more playable that you find a little space somewhere 😉 Good luck!

When you say turning off the tone on your strat, are you meaning that it has full treble? Or the least possible treble? As I know some strats are stocked with no-load tone pots, meaning when you aren’t rolling off any treble it basically disengages from the circuit and thus there’s less resistance and you’ll hear a noticeable volume boost - similarly if you just wired directly from your pickup to your output jack you would see a pretty large volume boost as well as a treble boost compared with the signal going through your normal wiring with a volume pot, a tone pot, a pickup selected etc even if you weren’t rolling off any volume or treble. If you did mean rolling off all your treble though, I really wouldn’t know what is happening, the fact you mentioned it only occurs in a specific position makes me think you probably did mean rolling off all your treble, and it must just be some quirk of the circuit, I sadly don’t have a strat to test out on but it’s a very interesting tip. Also will 100% be putting an EQ before the SY-200 after this, can’t believe how different it sounds. I wish boss just fitted the pedal with a 1k boost on the input given that had such a substantial effect on its own.
