Latter-day Saints’ Q&A

Күн бұрын

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only major Christian denomination, today, teaching that we lived with God as spirit children before we were born. WHY? This video describes that this doctrine was taught by Biblical prophets, believed by the early Christian Church, and then was dramatically rejected in the 6th century by Roman Emperor Justinian, whose violence towards anyone who opposed him led to the doctrine being labeled as heresy.

I forgot to mention this beautiful poem in the video:
William Wordsworth (1770-1850), Ode on Intimations of Immortality (from Recollections of Early Childhood) - excerpt:
Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting;
The Soul that rises with us, our life’s Star,
Hath had elsewhere its setting
And cometh from afar;
Not in entire forgetfulness,
And not in utter nakedness,
But trailing clouds of glory do we come
From God, who is our home

It's true. I am very sensitive to the spirit world and had some very sacred spiritual experience. I can't deny the feeling of home around spirits who visit me and when I have prolonged communication with them, coming back to this reality feels like simulation. Like everything around me in this world is fake and unfamiliar, like you are inside of a dream.

@@starlegends3092 I know this is a year later but as far as the fear of death goes. God didnt give us the spirit of fear, when I think about the fear of death I think maybe I dont trust what is after death 100%. To brave death is to trust you are in the hands of Jesus Christ. I need to take my own advice.

That's right. Jesus said the same thing. He said if you have see Him, you have seen the Father for they are with each other in spirit while both the Father and the Son are separate personages. When Jesus said the Father is in Him, He meant God's Holy Spirit is with Him. So many people take this out of context and assume God and Jesus are of one body which is wrong and proves the trinity wrong.

Add Titus 1:2 to your list of scriptural evidences for premortal life: “In the hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.” If there was a promise made before the world began, there had to be a promisee to whom the promise was made-the premortal children of God who existed as his spirit children before coming to this earth. Ephesians 1:4 says that God has chosen us in him “before the foundation of the world.” How could God choose that which did not exist? Doesn’t it make sense that those who made good choices were chosen to come to this earth?

None of these verses served as evidence to the point of the video. All were misused. The only verse here that even has a chance at being evidence is the Job38 verse. The ecllesiates and revelation Jeremiah John references were unrelated and out of context. The rest of the writers are interesting but the Bible is the only text that truly matters when it comes to topics like these. I don’t mean to be aggressive btw or seem that way. I clearly see things differently and it’s good to be passionate about our faith even if they may be slightly different. We see the text differently obviously. I do have a question as well though. If we were with God does that mean we were cast out. The Bible makes it clear we had no knowledge of sin until the fall in the garden so what would we have done to be put on earth. Also why would he make us lower then the angels if we were with him in heaven? To be with God would mean we were completely sinless because God can not tolerate sin. So the big question is why the switch up? Genuinely interested, again not malicious

It seems we have to define... for ourselves the difference between the spirit and soul. The teacher mentioned Ecclesiastes 12:7. This is pretty clear... upon death the spirit returns to G-d and the flesh to the ground. This suggests to me a preexistent spirit without the flesh. I haven’t really figured out what the soul is even after decades of thinking about it. I’m still working on it. The spirit and flesh is pretty clear. Where the spirit ends up is clear... returns to G-d. At least the Mormons will have an intelligent unemotional conversation on the subject. Thanks to all. Creekin.

In other faiths, the soul is another word for spirit. They are used interchangeably. In our faith, the Church of Jesus Christ of LDSs, a soul is a spirit and a body joined together - a living human being.

@@theephraimite I personally believe that the soul is like the middleman between the spirit and the flesh. 24/7 your soul is constantly in the battle of deciding to follow the flesh or the spirit in your decisions. When you die the corrupt flesh goes into the ground, your spirit which has been made perfect (which is also the real you) goes to the Father, and the soul is no longer needed and doesn’t exist anymore.

This doctrine is the reason why the issue of the physical creation - its method and process ("...yonder us matter unorgaized...") and the purpose of the fall and mortality are significant only to our doctrine. Everyone else must admit that any discussion of these points is simply whistling in the wind as their only answer is that God created humans just to humor himself.

Wow! I have been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of the Later-Saints since 1967. I admit I was a little surprised to learn that my spirit lived with God before I was born. Surprised but also comforted. Knowing I am a literal daughter of God shapes the way I view the world and my relationship to all of mankind. I am grateful this knowledge. I immediately believed the missionaries who taught me this doctrine but I know which scriptures that back this doctrine up. Thanks for new knowledge of when this doctrine was taken away from us. Thank goodness for the Restoration. And thank you for this presentation. This is the first time

@@latterdaysaintsqa I'm a Christian not a Mormon but I respect your beliefs. ATHEISM AIN'T GOT NOTHING NEW OR BETTER TO OFFER THAN THE VERY RELIGIOUS BELIEFS THEY'RE CRITICAL OF SO IT'S HYPOCRISY AT IT'S FINEST 😂. Hello this is for all you Atheists, unbelievers and skeptics. I'm going to address a few misconceptions and lies about God's Character and His Word. The Bible doesn't support chattel slavery or anything else Immoral. Ok so Atheists and unbelievers say God is either Immoral, incompetent or not responsible so let's see what The Scriptures actually say. God revealed himself and created a nation in a real, historical context. It was a world with a slave-based economy, with city states often at war with each other, with polygamous marriages to ensure the continuation of family lines. The laws of the Old Testament regulate this behaviour. Slaves are to be treated humanely (Exodus 21:11). They are given rights and not seen as mere possessions. Hebrew slaves were able to buy their own freedom. Human trafficking is condemned (Exodus 21:16). In contrast to the law code of Babylon, Old Testament Israel was a light to the nations. The Old Testament law and narratives do not stand alone. Jesus is now the best example of what we read. So the moral teaching of the Bible cannot be summarised by a quote taken out of context from the Old Testament to demonize God and His Word. Slavery was permitted in Old Testament law but it was regulated by God giving the Israelites instructions on how to fairly and humanely treat their slaves (it was like indentured servitude where someone could work for you if they owed debts or needed income not cruel like chattel slavery). God allowed the people of Israel to own slaves since they themselves has already experienced over 400 years of generations of Egyptian slavery and knew how inhumane it was to be beaten, overworked and taxed so God set them apart from other nations and cultures around them by giving them a fair way to treat their slaves since slavery had already existed in the world but it doesn't mean God condoned it just used it for His Will to bring Good And in the light of the whole scriptural teaching, we find the reasons for its ultimate abolition (Ephesians 6:9; Colossians 4:1-3; Philemon 15-16 and Galatians 3:28). The Word of God provided the moral standard against slavery in the Roman Empire and against the slave trade in the New World. But what of genocide or holy war in the book of Joshua? Several things could be pointed out. The use of warfare in the ancient world did not always mean literal total destruction, even when events are described in such terms. Furthermore, the book of Joshua does not describe a genocide. It is not a race who are being wiped out, as in genocide, but a religious practice which was often appalling and degrading. Those who repent (like Rahab from Jericho or Ruth) are not destroyed but become part of Israel. It is not the racial group that is in view but their "detestable practices". However, after all is said, we must still acknowledge that God brought judgment on the nations of Canaan. It is not our place as believers isn't to sugar-coat the Bible. For some skeptics, this is enough to make God a moral monster. But the fact is that Jesus continued to affirm that God is a Judge who will bring a future judgment on all peoples and all nations. God’s judgment will be just. The list of Old Testament stories rejected by critics often leads to a similar dismissal of the New Testament teaching of Jesus on the existence of hell. After all, what was the Flood of Genesis or the conquest of Joshua if not a glimpse of future judgment? Hell does not demonstrate cruelty on God’s part, but it does demonstrate His Holiness and our moral accountability. Perhaps this is the real reason many people rail against the God of the Bible? It is not that they think He is a moral monster, but that they are afraid He is a moral Judge, and that has implications for our behaviour now. God is an Eternal Almighty Spirit Being and we as His creatures have Eternal souls and spirits so the punishment for our sins against Him must therefore also be Eternal but so must the reward for righteousness that's why He sent His Son Jesus to live a perfectly righteous and sinless Life (which none of us could ever possibly expect to do) suffer the humiliating and torturous death of crucifixion to shed His Own Blood willingly so that all who willingly accept His gift of salvation by grace through faith in Him will be saved and given Eternal life because that's what God wants is for us to willingly accept His gift of salvation and choose life. Exodus 21:20-21 literally speaks about capital punishment befalling anyone who mistreats their slaves so yes people are taking Scripture out of context to demonize God who literally promises that slaves who are mistreated under someone else's authority is to be avenged. When we hear the word “slavery” we think of innocent human beings, kept prisoner for life, having no rights under law and so reduced to animals. This is clearly immoral because it is unjust: the slave has done nothing to deserve the treatment. The situation described as “slavery” in the Bible was nothing like this. It is more accurately described as one of indentured servitude. Many “slaves” were indentured servants, working for a term of years Some other “slaves” were prisoners. There were no prisons. Prisoners had to work to live like everyone else. Some had life sentences. Some served a term and were released. People didn't beat their good slaves but treated them well and protected their assets thus. But no matter how rebellious a slave was, you couldn't just beat them to death. And if you knocked out their tooth or damaged their eye then you had to set them free. (Exodus 21:26). God wasn't using what other nations did because He wanted to set His Chosen People of Israel apart from the cruel, inhumane and unjust systems other cultures had so He gave them a fair way to treat their slaves and servants. There is a lot of ignorance on this topic which is understandable given the age we live in but it's not the nefarious set up we think of when we think of modern slavery. The question Atheists must ask themselves is how come the Jews aren't being accused of slavery and human trafficking if they're guilty of it in The Bible and why would white slave owners rip out pages from The Old and New Testament Scriptures to justify their owning blacks as slaves if The Bible already justified slavery?

It really brings the idea of infinity and eternity full circle...the idea that we were all created and lived with God before we had physical bodies plays into our deep connection to the Earth and the universe as a whole. Scientists say we are on a one way trip to forever ♾️ as the universe expands more and more rapidly. This really makes me feel very intimate with God , and in my opinion ties into this belief. Of course I was raised in the LDS church, I however haven't been active in over 25 yrs. But this belief has always been readily accepted by me , it just felt , right...

I know I lived with God before I came to earth. I feel like I did more than anything and I even remember him. We were babies that talked like adults and were able to fly. Before I even saw painting of this, I know this. The paintings have some truth to it. Plus God was definitely a man. I remember some babies being mischievous but as a child it's natural and I remember being put here to be tested based on my personality and God said he was going to teach me life's lessons. So I figured our trials and tribulations are lessons and believe we should all work together and help each other out with the same love God gave us. We all have to be born through water in the womb and come here when it's our turn. Our purpose is to help each other while here. We are given physical bodies and are able to help each other. God wants us to love him but we have free will to choose if we want eternal life and will be written in the book of life If our works and hearts are good.

You pointed to Revelation 12:7-11 The war in heaven Where are those 1/3rd of the angels can't out of heaven? Here on the earth. Every time you read in the Bible about a person being posessed of a spirit yhey are being possessed by one or more of the cast out angels. Luke 8. The man in the tombs cutting himself. A Legion of devils possessed him. How bad did they want a body? So bad that they preferred the bodies of pigs rather than not having a body at all. Are they jealous of us because we have a body and they can never have one? Yes ! Do they hate us because we have a body and they can never have one? Yes Are they at war with us because we have a body and they can never have one? Yes Why do we have a body, and they don't have one? Because we are the ones who kicked them out of heaven.

In his famous speech on Mars Hill, Paul declared to the Athenians that we are the “offspring” of God. ( Acts 17:28 .) In modern times, in the revelation recorded in the seventy-sixth section of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Prophet Joseph Smith said that the “inhabitants [of the worlds] are begotten sons and daughters unto God.”

Love this so much!! This isn’t doctrine by any means, but I always find it so fascinating when people who experience a “near death experience” say heaven feels more “at home” or “familiar” than even their whole earth experience. I remember reading one account where someone said “being in the spirit world was more familiar than walking into my childhood front door.” Each account were from people who didn’t believe in pre-mortal life, but knew without a doubt we lived as Gods children before this earth life. ❤️ this knowledge changes everything. No wonder Satan tries his hardest to remove this doctrine.

I love this doctrine-even though I’m not Mormon but Anglican, it really resonates with me and makes a lot of sense. There is only one question I have:if we have pre-earth lives in the spirit with the father, how can such a large proportion of those follow evil and end up in hell? Do the souls of irredeemably evil people like Hitler exist as premortal souls in hell before they’re born?
@latterdaysaintsqa
@latterdaysaintsqa 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching and commenting! I will share how we would answer those questions, but to do so first requires explaining how we view the pre-mortal and post-mortal life, noting this is coming from a doctrinal perspective that might differ quite a bit from your background. Please stay with me on this because a number of things need to be explained so it will be lengthy, but then I will answer your questions at the bottom. We believe that we all existed as intelligences who were then born into God’s family as His spirit children. There we learned and progressed. We believe that we had agency to choose as spirits, between right and wrong. We believe God provided us with a plan (we call it the plan of salvation) in which we could progress further by coming to earth to obtain a physical body. We would have a veil placed over our mind so we couldn’t remember our pre-mortal life, allowing us to learn to experience the trials and oppositions of mortality, to learn to choose good and to follow God with faith, not by sight anymore. This would provide a deeper level of growth than could have been accomplished in the pre-mortal life. God knew we would make many mistakes while here on earth, but He provided a Savior for us, His only begotten Son in the flesh, Jesus Christ, which would allow us to be forgiven if we choose to follow Him. We believe that this plan was presented to us in the pre-mortal world and that there was an opposition to this plan, led by Lucifer before he was cast out, and became then known as Satan. While we don’t know exactly what he proposed, we are taught he sought to take away the agency of man. Lucifer, who wanted all the glory, essentially wanted to save everyone by not allowing agency, taking away the ability for us to truly grow. To have agency, you need to have 3 things: choices, freedom to choose, and consequences for the choices. My guess, especially based on what we see here on earth now, is Lucifer’s pitch was probably to take away consequences - everyone would be saved no matter what they did and without any requirements. It would have been an attractive sales pitch for those worried about failing here in mortality. We believe that the reward for us choosing God’s plan of salvation was to be able to be born into mortality on this earth. We believe those who did not agree with it and who maybe even tried, with Lucifer at their helm, to overthrow the Father’s plan, were cast down to earth, without receiving physical bodies. They became devils, allowed to be the opposition to good which is needed on earth for us to learn to use our agency to progress, strengthen our faith, and learn to become more like God. The scary arithmetic is that we believe 1 out of 3 spirit children rejected the Father’s plan and followed Lucifer. We believe that this “war in heaven” is what is described in Revelation 12 (vs 4 is where you read about the 1/3rd part, vs 7 the war and vs 9 the casting down to earth of Satan and all of his followers). Those who followed Satan and were cast down (like described in Revelation 12) are considered Satan’s angels (or better known as devils!) God has angels too whom He sends to visit the earth, with specific assignments to minister, strengthen, protect, warn or admonish His children. God’s angels are among His spirit children, either those who have not yet been born or those who have already been born and died, having been faithful to God’s plan. After death, we spend time in the spirit world, in a portion referred to as paradise, or another part referred to as spirit prison. Those in paradise have been faithful to God’s plan on earth and can serve as angels to teach and minister to those in spirit prison who never had a chance to know God’s plan on earth or who may have known it but never chose it. Prison is just a figurative word meaning their progress is stopped because they still need to be taught the gospel or repent and follow it. In this post-mortal spirit world, we can still repent and make progress with the help of angels who can teach and strengthen those who need it. For those who died in wickedness, spirit prison can be a hell for them as they will have to suffer great anguish for their sins that they would not repent of on earth. But if they do repent, and turn to Christ, they can be forgiven in the spirit world. Upon the resurrection and final judgement, we believe we don’t just go to heaven or hell. We believe there are 3 heavens or “degrees of glory” we are assigned to according to the degree we chose to follow Christ on earth and in the post-mortal spirit world phase. There is also a place referred to as outer darkness, where the very few will qualify to go - more on that belowl. In 1 Corinthians 15:40-42, Paul talks about the resurrections of the dead and different celestial bodies - comparing them in light or glory to that of the radiance of the sun, moon and stars (even the stars have light to us and are much better than darkness, but are a long ways in brilliance from the moon, and especially from the sun). He gives 2 of them names - Celestial and Terrestrial. We understand the last, that similar to the stars, to be the Telestial. Also, in 2 Corinthians 12:2, Paul talks about being caught up in a vision visiting the “3rd heaven”. If you want to read a description of a vision had by 2 individuals together - Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon in 1832, describing these 3 degrees of glory and who will be going there, along with outer darkness - it can be found in part of our canonized scripture known as the Doctrine & Covenants, specifically section 76 - here is a direct link: www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/76?lang=eng Now that I have shared all of this background, I can address your two-part question. You asked first “if we have pre-earth lives in the spirit with the Father, how can such a large proportion of those follow evil and end up in hell?” Based upon our beliefs shared above, we would first acknowledge that anyone who is born on earth, followed God’s plan and chose Christ in the pre- mortal battle against Satan. We know this by the very fact that they were born and received a physical body. The devlis we don’t see, but are here, were punished by not being allowed to have a body and experience mortality. As far as who ends up in hell after this life, because we believe there is a post-mortal spirit world between death and the resurrection, people can change and repent there as well. Then after the resurrection, comes the final judgment where Christ is the judge, so it is hard for us to say who is going to which of the three kingdoms of glory or who will be among the very few who are cast down to outer darkness. The vision of the 3 degrees of glory and outer darkness mentioned above gives a very good idea of where someone will be assigned, but we have to be aware of that interim spirit world condition in which someone can change. Those in spirit paradise are working with and teaching those in spirit prison to try and help them change. We believe based on the descriptions, almost everyone will be rewarded with one of the 3 degrees of glory (although those assigned to the lowest will first have to suffer completely for their sins since they didn’t accept Christ’s atoning sacrifice on earth or in the post-mortal spirit world.) We don’t know what that suffering entails but even D&C 76:84 refers to their experience waiting in the spirit world to be some of the last resurrected as a “hell”. But even these people who lived wickedly on the earth and didn’t change in the spirit world end up after resurrection and final judgement in a “degree of glory” - the “telestial kingdom”, or lowest kingdom but still a degree of glory. D&C 76:89 says “And thus we saw, in the heavenly vision, the glory of the telestial, which surpasses all understanding” (imagine what the “moon” and “sun” glories must then be like!) The number who are cast into outer darkness is extremely limited, they are known as sons of perdition. They have committed what is known as the unpardonable sin, blasphemy against the Holy Ghost - see Matthew 12:31-32. In the link I shared above, see also vs 34-36 - Those who deny the Holy Ghost after having received it and crucify the Savior unto themselves will have no forgiveness and will be sons of perdition. Joseph Smith once elaborated on what this entails "All sins shall be forgiven, except the sin against the Holy Ghost; for Jesus will save all except the sons of perdition. What must a man do to commit the unpardonable sin? He must receive the Holy Ghost, have the heavens opened unto him, and know God, and then sin against Him. After a man has sinned against the Holy Ghost, there is no repentance for him. He has got to say that the sun does not shine while he sees it; he has got to deny Jesus Christ when the heavens have been opened unto him, and to deny the plan of salvation with his eyes open to the truth of it (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith Section Six 1843-44, p.358) So for the last part of your question - “Do the souls of irredeemably evil people like Hitler exist as premortal souls in hell before they’re born?”. We would say again that anybody born on earth chose God and Christ and their plan in the pre-mortal life. It’s hard to imagine that somebody like Hitler chose God’s plan in the pre-mortal world, but that is our understanding. Those who chose evil in the pre-mortal life are devils now and will never be born. As far as Hitler’s future, only Christ can be the judge and we believe all the above will apply. Hope that all helps - you may also enjoy 2 other videos I did on Restoring Original Christianity (in part 2 I discuss the 3 levels of heaven believed by the early Christians for example).

I am not sure what that means but it sounds like a special blessing to have had that glimpse. In general, we have a veil over our minds, because we are to walk by faith in this life, but the Spirit can help us feel things about our pre-mortal experience, while still requiring faith. Maybe in special cases, and for reasons we don’t fully understand, extra gifts or blessings are given where even more is revealed as in your case. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing your thought! Our first prophet, Joseph Smith received a revelation in 1833 that had similar thoughts to what you just shared. It is canonized to us Latter-day Saints in our Doctrine and Covenants (found in section 93, verse 29). Here are the exact words: Man was also in the beginning with God. Intelligence, or the light of truth, was not created or made, neither indeed can be.

Few people ever get back to me. Having a grandmother who was a Mormon... Jewish grandfather... catholic clerical training... I suppose my point of view tends not to follow a specific party-line... which almost always leads to some form of ostracizing. Joseph Smith can’t be considered a prophet in the Jewish sense... however... his genius is often overlooked or not even considered. I understand organizations often feel the necessity to sanitize history. This is not necessary. Let’s celebrate all Christians (yes... Mormons are Christians... and act like it) that believe Yeshua is the Christ and take Proverbs 25:2 to heart. We can celebrate all who seek the truth about the Savior... Philippians 2:9-11. Creekin. How can Isaiah 7... and 9 possibly be true? The answer can change even the hardened of hearts amongst non believers. Let us not denigrate so much the true seekers of the Messiah. Creekin.

Which would make God, who "is Spirit," (John 4:24) the "Father of spirits," (Heb 12:19), even the spirits of all men, right? This seems to be what Paul declared to those in Ephesus when he said there is "One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." (Eph 4:6) The spirit returns to God who gave it because it is His Spirit, His Life, His breath, that was breathed into man (whom "Adam" represents, whether "the first man Adam," or "the Last Adam"). Scripture tells us that God is Spirit. It also tells us that there is only "one Spirit" by/through which all men are united with each other, as "one body" (the body of Christ, whose body we are) and with God (through Christ, whose Head is God). It seems to me that this is why scripture speaks of "the only begotten Son," who is bringing "many sons" to glory. The Head (Christ Jesus) and the body (body/bride of Christ) make up "one man," who is "the Son of God." So I agree with you that our spirit is a piece of God. Amen! Which is why scripture calls men "gods" and God "God of gods." To Latter-Day Saints' Q&A: While I agree with Crang Creekin, that certainly doesn't prove the pre-existence of man in the way LDS doctrine teaches it. Nor does it necessitate that we have a "mother in heaven" (as well as a Father), as LDS doctrine teaches. After all scripture tells us that the "first man" was natural, earthy, formed out of the dust of the ground... into which God breathed His Spirit, or the breath of life, making man "a living soul." It also tells us that all things that were created were created in, by and through Christ. He is said to be the beginning AND the end of ALL things. However, the LDS Church does not teach that. Not only do they teach the eternal separation of some soul (whether in outer darkness or just some lower kingdom of heaven), they place divisions in heaven, wherein not even all who make it to "heaven" make it back to "the Father." So while LDS doctrine doesn't send quite so many people to "hell," as does traditional Christianity, neither does it proclaim the truth of who Jesus Christ is, the Saviour of ALL men. I have a question that I will ask in a separate comment.
@TheDocNorman

Chrissiela I felt the spirit of Christ in your response. How much does G-d weigh? No kidding... this is a serious question. I suspect just about as much as the 1.2 billion waveforms going through our bodies right now. What makes man so special compared to the many different humanoid forms that exist and have existed throughout the eons? Serious questions. Reading Isaiah Chapters 7 and 9 we see that this creation was chosen for God to manifest himself... and in part... through Yeshua Jesus... his issue in a sense... in human form... in human flesh. Not hard for him to do since he designed everything we see. The Word that all things were created through. The Word that was with the Always from the beginning this was done through. Once Jesus ascended to the Father (not touched by any human at this resurrected point in order not to receive any type of virus) he reintegrated with the Always... beyond our imagination... where he came from. The Father felt every insult and stripe. But it seems to me that Yeshua gave up much more than just suffering... as part of God that felt every insult and stripe... Yeshua took on flesh for eternity. He gave up so much so he wouldn’t have to destroy it again as he has done so many times. But he’s testing us. Is Jesus G-d? Of course he is. Jews can get this if they open their mind a bit. Is my son me? Of course he is. Much of the same programming. Except Jesus came from G-d... G-d from G-d... same for the spirit. Perhaps not completely integrated by design from time to time but all are part of the great undivided. Yeshua and G-d... G-d and Yeshua... the Holy Spirit. You show me where they all start and stop. Thank you for sharing. I read your response three times. I suppose what is discarded on the day of judgement is the soul and not the spirit that can’t be destroyed... the bad programming that we chose not to be fixed by the Blood of the Lamb... which is G-d from G-d... separated for a time... but not really because the Holy Spirit is always present. Creekin.

I know the spirit goes back to God...but does the spirit define us as individuals? The Bible speaks of the same spirit embodying different individuals. Example...Elisha ask for the spirit of Elijah...and was granted. Bible also made reference to Elijah's spirit being with John the Baptist. If I was granted the spirit of Samson...I would have attributes of Samson...but would I not be me...not Samson?

You are always you - your spirit is your and yours alone, but yes, you can be influenced and strengthened by other spirits, and you gave some perfect examples of this from the scriptures. My phone won't charge so I'm using Chardona's phone. There is another way to see the teaching that we lived as spirits before we were born. In Revelation 12: 7-9 KJV we see that the spirits that were cast out of heaven are here on the Earth. Every time we read of a person who is possessed by an evil spirit and r devil they are being possessed by one or more of the angels who were cast out of heaven by Michael and his angels. In Luke we read of a man in the tombs cutting himself. When Jesus asked the name of the spirits that possessed the man they answered "Legion". The devil's petitioned Christ to cast them into the bodies of swine rather than out in the open, or in other words with no body. Could these devils manifest themselves in there own body? No, or they would have instead of asking to possess the bodies of swine. Are they jealous of us, because we have a body and they can never have one? Yes! They take any opportunity to possess a person's body that a person will give them. Do they hate us, because we have a body and they can never have one? Yes. They harm or cause a person to harm themselves that they possess. Are they at war with us , because we have a body and they can never have one? Yes. The war that began in heaven is still ongoing only now it is waging here on earth. We have a body as a result of us winning the first part of the war that started in heaven. How bad did the Legion of angels who possessed the man in the tombs want a body? It was everything to them. We are obviously favored by God that we have a body. To be denied a body is obviously a punishment. So not only do we see by this logical spiritual exercise that we lived before we were born, we also see that God, like Christ, has a body, because He does not suffer the punishment the devils. Romans 6:9 teaches us that Christ will never die again.

Look at Zech 3 and the calling of Joshua, Satan is there in his call of resister and he is told if he does well he will join with the men who stand by, they are men wondered at. Looks like Abraham 3 to me. Also in Ecc 12 because man goeth to his long home,... Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. The word "long" is the same as eternal, we return to our eternal home.

I am comforted to know that there is some record of a premortal existence. But I'm also angry, angry that the Adversary was so successful in convincing mankind that we are less than we are. Little by little, we are reclaiming the divine heritage that we were robbed of. Basic truths that were stolen and erased are being restored, and the Adversary cannot stop it.

@@cowboyneverdycowboynevercr2027 We also read in the Book of Abraham, that Abraham saw the pre-earth world in vision. He saw in a group of the Great and Nobles that there was one "like unto God". We see that Jehova/Jesus Christ was well established in his pre-earth accomplishments with the Father of us all. John 1:1-3 Jehova had already accomplished godhood before he was born, one who the Father could delegate over all parts of eternity.

LOVE it. 👏 👏 👏 Proud Lds convert and proud ex roman catholic. That being said, I back up the belief of premortal existence once being accepted by many early Christians that Catholics have looked up to as well. I had debated a lot with a devout roman catholic. He was giving me bunch of quotes by early church fathers. Same early Christians who are some of the same people that would have believed all this. Along with others that did indeed believe in the factual preexistence.

So many people who have had near death experiences talk about feeling as though they were "home." Yet their churches almost unilaterally teach that this would be impossible. The amazing thing is this: most of the people born into mortality will be born and raised in the Millennium. These will be the creme of the proverbial crop. We are blessed to live in our day, but those born in the Millennium will be even more blessed. Think of it. The majority of people who will ever be born will have no tribulations in their lives, period. Satan will be bound and there will be no disease or heartache. And most of the Father's blessings will be theirs. They proved themselves in the premortality and will be the most blessed off all.

I've often wondered if there is something to that occasionaly! Here is a fascinating quote from President Eyring's last general conference address: I have been blessed to feel that peace every time I enter the sacred temple. I recall the first day I walked into the Salt Lake Temple. I was a young man. I looked up at a high white ceiling that made the room so light it seemed almost as if it were open to the sky. And in that moment, the thought came into my mind in clear words: “I have been in this lighted place before.” But then immediately there came into my mind, not in my own voice, these words: “No, you have never been here before. You are remembering a moment before you were born. You were in a sacred place like this where the Lord could come.”

Remember. If you want wisdom, ask of God. The Apostle James had said this specifically. The witness of truth is the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit. Listen to Him testify if anything is truth or not. Choose wisely and allow God to guide you in your life; men or women; boys or girls. Jesus is there to heal you, He is our brother, our teacher, our Messiah and our Lord & Savior. He is the Redeemer and Prince of Peace. God is our Heavenly Father who loves us very much. I testify that pre-mortal existence did happen and that we were set apart by Jesus, being chosen to be His followers/prophets to all nations. Jesus foretold that we would worship Him as He wants and I testify this is already in motion. I testify the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true Church restored upon this earth. I testify that we do have living prophets today and that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God. I testify that through our Lord, Jesus Christ, we can do anything good to glorify His Father's name. In the name of our beloved Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Another very important scripture that proves premortality is found in Acts 17:26, And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; How could God predetermine the times and the living places of men if they weren't with him before?

In your Fair Mormon reference Origen is brought up with regard to Esau. It reads: "As an example of this concept supported in the Bible, Origen referred to the Old Testament story of Jacob being preferred over Esau. Why was this so? According to Origen, because "we believe that he was even then chosen by God because of merits acquired before this life." How can that be true when the whole point of the statement was that God chose Jacob over Esau before either did anything to "merit" being chosen? The whole point is that it is God who does the choosing and His choices are not based on merit (our "earning" it), but on His grace, isn't it? If we understand the "types" of scripture, we understand that Jacob and Esau served as types or figures for the natural man (the first/natural man - born of the flesh) and the spiritual man (the second or last man - born of the Spirit, the son of God). This same pattern is repeated over and over again throughout the OT, beginning with "Adam," who was "a figure of Him who was to come" (the Last Adam, the second man, the Son of God - God's Chosen/Elect, in whom our "election" is made sure!). I have seen Andrew Jukes referenced in some LDS literature, but I have yet to come across anyone LDS who has read any of his work. He wrote extensively on types in scripture. A very good read if you haven't read him and don't mind the recommendation. His books are available online for free.

Chrissiela, I understand the point that you are making. We look at Jacob and Esau. We also understand God's fantastic grace that he blesses us by. My mind is drawn back to Jeremiah 1: 5- As a man destined to become a prophet, Jeremiah had rough times during the conquest of Jerusalem. God reminded him; Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Since we can't remember our life before our birth, we don't remember the accomplishments we made in that yonder heaven before the throne of God. From a personal experience, I learned that before we were born we had a fantastic amount of respect for the Noble one we called Father! Nothing was done without his stamp of approval. I also know that he was personally involved in our pre-earth spirit life and knew our accomplishments. Jacob was a good man and God already knew what man he was destined to become.
