I peeked over at your channel, and I see you have some amazing stuff! I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that nobody kept random pieces of paper that were printed off and sliced up with scissors 🤣 looking back at it now though, it seems so crazy.

Haven’t made a video in ages, but I never stopped collecting. I have an 8 person cube built using just alpha playtest cards. I did do a video on that maybe 6-7 years ago. When Joel mentioned “other collectors” I’m one of the people he meant. He saw my playtest cards at Emerald City ComicCon many years back, and got ahold of me through them.

The lawsuit in question was between WotC and Palladium over the inclusion of conversion rules in WotC's The Primal Order for the Palladium Role-Playing system (covering a variety of titles including TMNT, Rifts, Robotech). There was some real concern over whether WotC would survive, and they made sure the Magic was not owned by WotC until the lawsuit was resolved (it was settled in March 1993, iirc), hence Garfield Games holding most of the IP rights and WotC just being the publisher initially. Though WotC called off the boycott of Palladium's products as part of the settlement, some of us maintain it still.

You're surrounding yourself with past Alpha 40 League champions! haha Great interview! I've bought some fantastic cards from Joel and it's really cool to play against him in the league. The really important part of the segment is @33:00. How many OS collections got gobbled up in the 2000s when these first players went to college? Wild to hear that the 9 of 9 Chaos Orb puzzles exist haha It's still impressive to me that after 30 years, top-tier commander decks still use 30-year-old or modern versions of the original cards. And that the product is still so successful after all of these years.

I looked at his website, and found the playtest cards to be so weird and cool. What a wild era that must have been. Such a cool conversation with a grandfather of the game! I'm super curious about the notion of Garfields original intent of 'being surprised by stuff played against you'. Definitely not how the game works now, and probably isn't possible due to the internet, but I wonder if it's possible to mechanically recreate that vibe.
