I have had my pre90 for just two days now but I completely agree with your review. This is one fantastic componant! One aspect not covered in your video is saving preferences in the settings menu. If you haven't done this yet here's a little info. Turn off the pre90, turn off the rear main power switch, hold down the sel button while switching the rear power back on. You will now be in the settings menu. Turn the volume knob to go to an item and press the sel button to make your selection. When you have made your selections be sure to select save. The pre90 will reboot and you're all set. I set the safe volume on and put it at -40db to keep others from accidentally blasting the volume and set the display to A for autodim because I like that feature. There are other things you can do in there also if you so choose.

Is it possible to set individual safe mode for each input? I would like to use the RCA input and connect it with the pre out of an avr in a HT system and the XLR to a Dac in a stereo system. Therefore the input volume needs to be different. Is it also possible to fix the input volume? Thanks

I just bought a Topping Pre90 6 days ago and I can confirm that the sound quality has noticeably improved. MY audio chain is PC based (JRiver software) connected by usb cable to a SMSL M400 dac connected to a Denon PMA2500NE amplifier and thence to Amphion Argon 3S speakers. I had to use the SMSL M400 as a dac and preamplifier because the volume control on the Denon is not fine enough. Its either too soft or too loud with each step down and up. Inserting the Pre90 into the chain, I could set the SMSL M400 as a pure dac with SLR cables to the Pre90 and thence by RAC cables to the Denon (which lacks balanced input). At first I was a bit hesitate on buying the Pre90 but considering that I had already spent so much money on the Denon amplifier and Amphion speakers, I might as well spend a bit more on the Pre90. It was a damn good decision as the sound quality is really much improved. I dont think I can get a better preamplifier at this price or even at a higher price range.

Also owning the m400 and having used usb (what should be more exact, than check-summed digital parcels, right?) I recently changed the input to the Allo digione signature "streaming" from an usb flash drive using Volumio. This will surely surprise you as well! All the high res I put through usb was blown out of the water by simple 44khz flacs via coaxial. I'm currently waiting for my PRE90 ... :-) - thanks for saying, that it matches good with the M400. Cheers!

Just wanted to thank you for your review. You influenced me to change the direction I was going with my current system build. I'm putting together a second system that will be music only and 100% digital streaming. I have the Topping D70S and Pre 90 ordered and I'll be running those directly to a power amp that I haven't yet decided on. I'm really interested in the Keces S125 though after seeing the positive review from SoundNews. You can get a very high performing digital system nowadays with a relatively small amount of investment. I've seen the Pre 90 online and just ignored it thinking that Topping probably wouldn't make a very good pre at that price. I was actually really close to purchasing the Freya+ and then this video happened to play in my autoplay while I was shaving last week! I can't thank you enough for bringing this to my attention, and I'm certain you'll have saved me a little leg work!

@JosephTongret

@@HighStrungAudio oh wow, I just sold my F208's maybe two months ago, actually to begin funding the new system build. They were my "reference" speakers(I also have a few pairs of lesser expensive speakers) . They were beautiful and performed extremely well in all technical aspects, but I had the Walnut finish which really didn't fit my aesthetics and decor very well. I also just got a little bored with them too. They just weren't "exciting" sounding or as "engaging" as some other speakers I've had or heard that maybe didn't measure as well on paper. I got them at a really great price, so I was able to keep them for a year and still make a little money in the end. I've been a music lover my whole life, but I'm only a few years into this hobby as far as the system building goes, so I'm still trying all the flavors of sound out there and kind of finding what best suits me. I'm going to purchase a pair of Tekton's first for this build but not completely sure which model yet. Eric has so many that it's going to require a phone call on my behalf to get a better idea of which model I'd like. Sorry for the ramble, I'm just always curious about what components people use. I appreciate your time and effort with the videos you've been doing and I'll be looking forward to following you if you continue with channel. I've considered sharing my journey, but YT can be a rough place and it takes a lot of guts and a lot of uncompensated work to do it!

I am honestly curious about this. Most amps have an input sensitivity around 2 volts. Meaning, that 2 volts would take your amp to its maximum power output. So really you are never putting 2 volts into your amp, so I wonder why it would make a difference if a preamp could output 2v or 50v. You would never go beyond 2 without blowing up your equipment. I am not saying the Pre90 doesnt improve the sound quality (in fact, I just ordered one), but I just dont understand how the output voltage would affect the sound quality.

Don’t believe everything you hear. Speaker cables, speakers, interconnects all play a role. The Aries 2 benefits from the pre90 in my testing. I have not tested the original Aries as there are some differences. Pre90 is now bested by the SMSL HO200 for a more clear and wider sound stage overall better sound. Pre90 will complement Bright class D Amps.

I actually loved the pre-amp in the A90 which you were not a big fan of :) In my system the A90 pre elevated my sound quality probably due to the less than desirable output impedance and voltage you spoke of. I have a Topping D90 DAC feeding a Keces E40 integrated amp. The D90 has XLR output but the E40 does not have XLR input. Would there be a benefit if I connected the D90 to the Pre90 via XLR and then connected the Pre90 to the E40 via single ended cables?
@HighStrungAudio
@HighStrungAudio 3 жыл бұрын
Yes ! Since the pre90 will have a much higher output voltage with either output on the d90 ! Also the output impedance is lower as well making a better match. The Keces will benefit by becoming more dynamic and lively as your lifting the burden off the amp.

I noticed a pretty bizarre thing going on with this unit for example I only use XLR and I don’t use RCA so everything hooked up Is xlr but if I use this preamplifier and I choose the output stage as there is three options either RCA or XLR or both at the same time when you enable both at the same time I notice quite a bit of gain more volume and to me more detailed cleaner and more sharper sound maybe it’s my ears I don’t know but I definitely hear something going on here maybe the extra gain makes it sound better? But I don’t know why it does that because the only cables I’m using going in and going out to my DAC it’s only XLR so I was messing around the other day and usually I keep it both the input in the output on this device I said it to only XLR but then I decided to put the output to rca+xlr and then wow a lot more gain that also sounds better more dynamic what’s your thoughts on this if you have an experienced this issue let me know as I first thought it was a faulty unit so I just purchased a brand new one and it’s the same thing let me know if you prefer the sound of using both modes enabled and you can see for yourself the gain increase. So the Takeaway message here is if you enable the output on this device specifically to rca+xlr I am noticing a big increase in level gain as well sound quality improvements…. Why I dunno? If someone is using for the input RCA I don’t know if it’s gonna make a difference but in my case you’re in you should be using XLR to get the most out of this unit and then you’ll see what I’m talking about… 🙏👌

Your thoughts? because to me it sounds like it’s about 10 DB louder give or take and for some weird reason I find it opens up the sound even though it’s louder obviously correct me if I’m wrong but it sounds like faster little bit cleaner and more dynamic the bass hits harder like the sound in general improves do you think that’s possible what’s your thoughts on that or do you think it sounds the same. I mean when you switch back over you have to crank up the volume a little bit more to match but the end result do you think it’s about the same sound quality it’s bizarre I never seen a preamplifier do such a thing like this and I’m wondering how it’s getting more power more gain this way when I’m not even using RCA

Note the input impedence is really low - it's not suitable for Denafrips products for example, and has a much higher load than many passive set-ups. Seems a good unit as long as the pairing is suited.

Should try the gustard p26 preamp in my opinion the more advanced better design better power supply I found it better then this I have both but they are close. Great review. I do notice with this unit when I’m listening to loud volumes around -20 -23 If I’m playing the music and I set the volume there for a few seconds and then I want to like make small increments by taking the remote maybe touching up on the volume one or two more clicks or down a few clicks to turn it down I didn’t somehow feel like hear some clicks and voltages popping sound coming out my speakers of try different equipment different speakers I’m very smart when it comes to things like this And audio usually have good knowledge but I couldn’t figure this out because this is the only preamp I’ve tried with the set up that makes that click pop sound static voltage kind of sound when you’re pumping volume hard asked there’s no reason I should be hearing this either I have a faulty unit but I find it bizarre that I hear it at loud volume. And it’s not the normal clicking sound because he turn the volume up or down the unit makes a clicking sound by itself that’s the volume control and turn on relay that does all of that it’s not the same clicking sound I’m talking about. Two of the best preempt I’ve ever heard I think they sound fantastic in my experience measurements are not always the best you can have fantastic measurements but are unique and sound very sterile hard or harsh ! That’s my opinion for example another great preamplifiers kinki studio P7 the measurements don’t seem to be as good as they pre90 but in my opinion it’s a better sounding for sure not not because the measurements open soundstage everything and that’s not next level very expensive. The second option would be to P 26 Gustard not bad either. But other than that I’ve tried a lot of other preamplifiers and found myself very disappointed they didn’t really perform well or I didn’t feel anything worthwhile. And I have tried the Freya + I really like that piece I like what it represents but it wasn’t very clean sounding and if anything I feel it was slightly on the warmer side sound and more soft more buttery more flabby sounding I guess then pre90 so then end decision was not to keep the Freya especially it’s expensive for what you get I didn’t care for the other features just only needed a preamp that sounds clean nothing else.

Will this upgrade the sound quality if I add this in between the chord qutest and the Violectric V550? Btw if I happen to have an A90 with me can I use the pre amp section of the A90 to achieve similar results?
@HighStrungAudio
@HighStrungAudio 3 жыл бұрын
V550 has a better pre amp section than Pre90 for me. It’s more natural. Thicker sound. The pre90 it’s a tad more open on to end though.

A pre amp should not change the sound. The A90 is flat, so it's transparent. Just like you would want.

How does topping pre90 vs schiit preya
@HighStrungAudio
@HighStrungAudio 3 жыл бұрын
Both different. Pre90 technically enhances the music to a new level. The quality of the reproduction goes up by a lot. The freya just adds tube sound to music which some people find pleasing. The clarity goes down a bit with freya and the overall tone changes to be less accurate Clarity, frequency range and dynamics are enhanced by the A90.

I love the review but in my experience I’ve been doing A.B. testing and stuff like this for many years and I have quite the set up but I bought this unit to use with a few different dacs and the topping d90 ! The topping being one of my favourite of choice dacs and what I did was only use the topping d90 as a dac only mode no preamplifier turned on inside it and ran it to this to my power amp and then did a record for say 1min and then switched it same gain and same volume but now topping d90 in its dac / preamp mode and what I found was with the 390 in the chain it doesn’t sound better I listen very closely and it seems to add a little bit more distortion and makes the sound maybe a little bit more fuller but by a hair but what I do here is it’s a little bit more cloudy the sound less fast less sharp less detailed which is decently noticeable compared to listening to the D 90 by itself and both modes and using it as a Preamplifier I think adding extra things into the chain degraded the sound for some reason I was surprised but the D 90 sounds better on its own with its own preamp inside then using the dac i’ve even tried this preamplifier with a bluesound node 2i And use this as a volume control instead was the only time it made a slight better improvement sound and that set up with a bluesound this was a better volume control in terms of detail and sound quality by a little but with the topping the d90 it’s a bit of a piss ass and I even reached out to the company that made this topping them self. But it seems to slow down the music and add a very slight delay adding this external Preamplifier then say using the one built in the d90 ! So in my experience I end up selling it the 390 because they didn’t give me better details and clarity and overall better sound then using what was already in the D 90 and it supposed to be better the pre-90 but it slowed everything down made things slightly slightly more muddy and hazy more recessed less sharp less fast the bass ! Maybe I had a defective unit but I doubt it but I wish I got the same experience you did and said this was mine blowing I didn’t think it was worth $2000 so I’m just using the D 90 and it’s preamplifier mode right now sounds faster cleaner sharper more in your face and it just gets out quicker hard to explain there’s no add a delay and by adding any external Preamplifier‘s even if they have such a small amount of distortion levels you still going to hear that when you add some thing else into the chain so it’s usually better in my experience to go as short and fast as direct as you can go dac direct if you can.

@@newton5954 it could be that you’re using RCA inputs and outputs only. The XLR gives a much better sound. You also need to make sure that you’re using high-quality RCA jacks if you’re using the ones that come with the unit or run-of-the-mill it’s going to degrade the sound of Course.

Also it’s important to know what amplifier that you are using you want to make sure that it has a high input ohm rating. What amp are you using ?

Mate clarity is not everything in sound.Tubes literally drag you into a different dimension of the music.I did not compare Freya against that Pre90,but i guarantee you Freya will destroy it...Tube Preamp is a must with SSD Power Amp!In my opinion Preamps should be used for spaciousness of the sound and separation of the instruments and sounds in music not just for clarity.And that is most achievable with tubes!

This pre90 suck, I own one, no match to my old threshold T3. human ear cannot detect even distortion 0.1% , and 00001% is meaningless, same with SN ratio , 90db is enough, 120 dB meaningless.
