Only $5 for 10 PCBs and every new member get $5 bonus. + Express 24 hour / 48 hour service on www.pcbway.com/ ➠ ➠ ➠ These German tube radios were designed with sound quality in mind, and the way they achieved that is really astounding. That's what I want to go into in this video. The preamp, as simple as it is, is surrounded by a really complex tone shaping network that is a work of art, both in its complexity, and ultimate result.
I hope you enjoy the series, and invite you to comment.
Errata: The pin 1 used as a convenient solder tag is actually on the socket used as the interconnect for the tone buttons, and not on the EL84 socket as erroneously mentioned in the video.

Manuel, Excellent explanations. The hobby is much more rewarding when you understand how these radios work. I also want to thank you for the solder wick recommendation you made several videos ago. Chem-Wik works like no other wick I have used in the past. Keep those soldering tips and tricks coming.

Simply amazing videos, Manuel! I wish I could go back in time and show this series to my younger self when I was learning to work on tube radios. It would have made everything so much more understandable. Fantastic job. Looking forward to the next one!

Thanks again Manuel! Once more you excelled yourself in presentation skills (at 3:30). The animation of the switches really hammered it home even for the most slow-witted of us. I believe you even thought of syncing the swiching sounds to the clip.👍👍

Thank you. Brilliantly explained in what was a short space of time. Takes me back to the radio theory, practicals, and examinations during the first year of my apprenticeship (1971 - 76). Best regards, Phil.

Nice video, as usual ! That "contraption" R+C covered in copper tape , looked like a NASA satellite!. Looked amazing the way It was! You should have covered It with transparent isolation and shine a light on It! Applauses from Argentina!

This is a very important resistor as well, because if this is leaking DC, that can be a problem as well (12:24). Still learning something new every day, ho, ho. Seriously though, keep up the good work.

I cannot tell you how useful I am finding this series. It's superb and so well explained. I rather enjoyed that little gotcha on the last video (Bass v TA); it got the old grey matter working! 😁 I can see that pin one on the EL84 confusing the hell out of me one day so I will try and remember that for future reference. Also, great to see the new build on that shielded capcitor and resistor. Great work!

👍 I don't recall ever seeing an American radio that uses an equivalent EABC80 tube like this. (Although I haven't looked into my cross-reference manual's.) Your RC circuit looks quite nice. That feedback is what gives it that Hi-Fi quality. As you said, (the richness!)

Manuel, Thank you for helping to bring more hobbyist into the radio restoration hobby. Your technique of teaching using schematic to explaining fundamentals rather than showing how to replace capacitors and resistors is commendable. Don't get discouraged about the number of views on this series as a lot of your viewers have a good understanding of electronics. I think your neighbor's dog has a question.

I really enjoy making these videos as it forces me to go back to when I was starting out in this particular hobby. I constantly have to remind myself to not gloss over things, which makes the videos “schematic heavy”, but that’s the way it is. I have often wished I lived in a bigger city which would allow me to do what I’ve wanted to do for a long time: organise a weekend-long “bring your own radio to restore”. That would be fun. Unfortunately in Madeira we just have too few people to make that work.

Thanks for the video Manuel. In my opinion, all these 'tone shaping' features are just gimmicks that radio manufacturers added to their products to boost sales. They seem designed to create an illusion of 'progress.' I own a tube radio from the late '50s (an ASA 1147) that has bass and treble controls, a piano key marked 'speech,' and three extra buttons labeled 'solo,' 'orchestra,' and 'jazz' - with 'orchestra' simply meaning neither 'solo' nor 'jazz.' These controls can really mess up the sound. Plus, I don't see why high frequencies need to be boosted so much when listening to jazz music.

I must admit I’m more fascinated by the lengths they go to to change the tone, and I really like seeing the means they use to achieve this.
