Early this morning having a cup of coffee this idea popped into my head. Remembering all of the pick-up games and over-the-line games and other made-up baseball games we played as kids. A very special time…
PRECIOUS DIAMONDS
Havin’ coffee this mornin’ - thoughts of simpler days
Of my buddies and me - headin’ out to play
With a bat and a ball - and a dusty old glove
To an empty field - for the game we love
Memories and friendships - never forgotten
Even when times - can seem a bit rotten
Playing and dreaming - till the daylight’s end
These precious diamonds - are a child’s best friend
Rounding first - tag an old wood block
Diggin’ for second - a torn cardboard box
Getting caught in a pickle - while goin’ for three
Slidin’ head-first - another skinned knee
Memories and friendships - never forgotten
Even when times - can seem a bit rotten
Playing and dreaming - till the daylight’s end
These precious diamonds - are a child’s best friend
Now a fly ball to left - it’s just a can o’ corn
Taggin’ up - this runs gonna score
Headin’ for home - well, a trash can lid
Come in standing up? - Nah, we always slid
Hope you liked the game - this blast from the past
It’s nice to go back - though it went by so fast
Now another cup o’ joe - and I’ll say it again
These precious diamonds - are a child’s best friend
These precious diamonds - where the fun never ends
These precious diamonds - have been my best friends
