This is a quick demonstration of the process we use to injection mould recycled plastic at our Innovative Waste Design Studio.
We have been following the precious plastic project and were inspired to make a plastic shredder in the hope that we could help local waste pickers. The machine is based on the open source designs of Dave Hakkens' Precious Plastic.
We received an injection moulding machine from @plasticpreneur who make a small-scale production ready machined shipped anywhere in the world. The build quality is great and the machine has European safety certification.

This is awesome and very well documented and narrated, nice work! I am curious about using recycled plastics for the mass production of products and product caseworks. In your experience are there any major drawbacks to using recycled plastics in place of virgin alternatives? I have read material properties are adversely effected when compared to virgin materials but I wonder whether you have experienced any drawbacks firsthand? I just finished making an injection machine. Totally from scratch. It looks like a professional machine😂 totally winged it. Mine makes 3 Tons of pressure though. Except I automated my injection so I just push a button and it does the hard work. It's a machine. ITS supposed to do the work😂

Also just made my own it’s 20 ton. Want to use it for PolyCarbonate. Just hard 1” threaded rod on Four sides with 8” by 8” by 1/2” thick steel plates in the middle with 1” nuts to lock all the plates in. Sorry I’m from USA we are stubborn and don’t use metric.

this looks really cool. I'm curious as to how you get such clean cuts at the product's edges after molding?

We just use a sharp blade to slice off the very thin flashing, its hard to see any blemishes

what about the molds? you will need a cnc machine to make them? and the material should be strong like steel? thank you for sharing your video

Hi Liam its closer to 30 grams, approximately 22 plastic bottle tops to make one
