You show that a no till farmer can have high yielding crops, I look at you as a leader in no till!

Enjoyed your video matt. Very helpful. My 3600 is still mechanical an spring down force. I'm 12/38 23/19 as well. God bless.

well back in 1972 dad and I fabricated a corn planter from a new ideal universal power unit with a heavy toolbar in the front we used 8 roll, 30in, JD precision I'm really surprised any one is still planting wide rolls We did everything in one pass fertilizer post emergence herbicide insecticide, but I'm here to tell you that planter was spot on we could dial that thing to exactly what we wanted we had the units set up for 30 in rolls we set our spacing at 4in apart and that is what we got no skips no double,s dad planted at around 7miles an hour and I got one hell of a work out keeping him full we only planted a little over 1000acres but in 1970,s that was pretty,good size we fed most all of our corn alot of people laughed at us untill the corn came up and how neat and straight and evenly our plant population was and we were putting in 150 acres a day so even in the beginning precision planners were the way to go !!!!

Matt im a firm believer in precision farming. It makes everything so easier and always have a pretty accurate stand behind the planter.

Great information. Thanks. Did the closing system you had before close better than normal closing wheel setup? I have yetter twister there ok in the heavy cover crops but I think there has to be something better. But don't know that I can justify them for 370 acres.

Yes I had a double disc closing system and it worked pretty well in most conditions. You can buy them on Shoup. Think they were around $400/row

I had V sets ordered for my 1200 last year. Due to back orders and going with an 8 row corn head, I canceled the order. So I’ve ordered a new planter with not many features and may build on it later. One option I did get was pneumatic downforce. Do you prefer hydraulic over pneumatic and why? Informative video.

I’ve never run pneumatic but I would say that it’s much preferable to having springs. The biggest benefit to hydraulic downforce over pneumatic is that it can adjust so much quicker. I think hydraulic can adjust like 15 times per second. Plus hydraulic hoses are much more durable than air lines.

Nice honest evaluation of your planter updates, why did you not buy ccs planter instead of individual row boxes? You have 38 inch corn row spacing with 19 inch interplant,have you ever considered 19 or 20 inch for corn?

The boxes on each unit give us a lot more flexibility with all the different plots and tests we do. Yes I have considered narrow row corn, but I think with our hot summers, it can be detrimental to the corn as there’s not enough airflow through the plants if we get a real hot spell. I’ve seen 20” corn not have any ears whenever you get pas the end rows of a field because it burnt up.

Matt; maybe you covered this in another video, but what exactly happens when you cross over an outside curvy row when you are doing your straights in the middle. Does each bin setup start and stop based on your gps data and eliminate overplanting?

Yes. Anytime a row on the planter crosses into a planted area, it shuts off

I appreciate your review of the Precision components. When your planting corn or cotton, are you able to use DeltaForce to pick up the front splitter rows? I bought a new to me planter with DeltaForce and vDrive. I’m excited to get it in the field. Hoping it all works correctly.

Yes but it can only be done using the DetaForce health check. It will lift each unit one at a time and as long as you have the unit locks tripped, it will lock the units up

I know you said you were planting 38 in rows because of cotton. How do you feel about wider rows? Like 60in? I know Adam chappell does 76in. I visited with him last year and saw some of his cotton last year. I have been on 30in but harvest is slow. Been thinking about 60s. My 4 row 30in picker could do 3 60 in rows.

I have my doubts that our growing season is long enough to fill the plants out enough to compensate for yield on 60". I also have my doubts about weed control too but Adam seems to make it work somehow. I've talked to him several times but haven't had the opportunity to visit his farm yet.

@@griggsfarmsllc it was definitely different. You could almost drive a small car between the rows. He has built his own hooded sprayer to spray between the rows.

Is the difference between the soil sample and the planter be because the planter is on top of the soil and soil sample is a deeper sample. Just asking not a farmer.

The firmers are measuring the top 2 inches of the ground where soil samples are probing to top 6 inches. The farther down in the soil you go, organic matter decreases. So if your theory was correct, the firmers should measure a higher organic matter rather than a lower organic matter. It’s a good theory, but I don’t think that’s what’s actually happening
