I learned something at our .22 Sniper Match Saturday. I need to weigh my ammo. I had 4 misses out of 60 rounds fired. All were high over the targets. My Bergara shoots in the .2s at 50 yards. This Lot of SK Long Range is one of it's favorites. I weighed 4 boxes when I got home. There were 3-4 heavy bullets in each box. ALL ammo must be Lot tested even Tenex. Center-X was more consistent weight wise. My Bergara does not like Eley. My H&R 12 and Kimber 82G like Eley.
@XFBO
@XFBO 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't started weighing them....yet. But I did buy one of those rim thickness gauges, not using the greatest dial gauge (HF) but even still I find variations in almost every box I measure and keep notes on my findings. Eley Match is amongst one of the best I've come across so far with variations measuring under .001, in fact I just purchased 2 bricks of their Benchrest Precision and the few boxes I measured came in at the same .001!!! The worst so far was Remington Thunderbolt, granted it's cheapo plinking ammo but I measured up to .006 total. Food for thought for those getting into the weighing their ammo game....lol

Were I competing at this level, I would be weighing and checking for deformities. I'd show up with the best of the best ! Reloaders know all about it ! Tumble the brass, ream the primer pocket, trim the oal, check the thickness of the rim and neck. After all that, weigh them. Then start weighing the bullets. I can get ridiculous, but so are the results !

Acquired a Savage Precision in .22WMR. Running a Mueller fixed 40×56 Target Dot, UTG Flex Recon bipod, with a radial brake (just so I can retain sight picture). Would like to see ammo manufacturers produce competition grade ammo for this cartridge (.22WMR). On the verge of acquiring an ATS barrel tuner (permits brake installation post tuner) OR the new Eric Cortina "EC tuner V.2" (as of 31Aug2022). The ATS tuner screws directly onto 1/2 x 28 threads AND requires the muzzle cap to be reinstalled (or muzzle brake) whereas the EC model requires an adapter to attach the tuner. The NICE thing about the EC tuner is that NO TOOLS are required to make adjustments. A tuner, is a tuner, is a tuner..., they all balance/time barrel harmonics. IMHO, the one that minimizes the amount of time for adjustments and is repeatable..., well the EC V.2 is the obvious choice. But my .22WMR rifle jumps enough at the muzzle that I cannot view impact. Personally I'm probably going to go with Eric Cortina's V.2 model first and if sight picture retention isn't achievable then give the ATS model a go. When did we begin making shooting rimfires so complicated?
@PursuitofAccuracy

Weight in the stock / chassis is going to tame a lot more recoil sight picture movement than the tuner

In your experience, does “enough” lot testing give you a data set where you can generally predict what a barrel will like (i.e. if a barrel prefers “slower” versions of Match in the 1030-1040 FPS range versus the 1060-10-70 range)? Or are there enough variables to where you have to lot test every few seasons?
@PursuitofAccuracy
@PursuitofAccuracy 2 жыл бұрын
I would still lot test every time i buy but buying less than a case is a waste of time and money if your lot testing. Best to lot test then buy as much as you can afford so your not lot testing 6 times a year. Similar speed does seem to continously provide the best lots though....just not always

Airgun shooters here in the UK have found that batch number (lot number) is king for pellets, we'll find a batch our gun likes then buy as many as we can afford of that batch. Something FT and HFT shooters (UK's main outdoor airgun target sports) have been doing for many years now, there's still many that don't know this, many still go by the head size, which turns out is meaningless.

Good video. I don't think most people know about trying difference lot numbers of the same ammo. Most just try one box each brand. They may pass up the best ammo for there gun without doing lot testing. I normally try about 5 lot# of each brand. Four may just be OK and one could shoot whole group's If didn't try that lot# first you pass up some great ammo. All top brands ammo has lot #'s

I've owned four 457's; an LRP, a Pro Varmint, and two MTR's (both 16.5" and 20"). All pretty much shot pretty well at 50yds (under 1/2" groupings) but no where near as well (tight) as my Bergara B14R. Out to 100 yds, my CZ's shine a bit better than the B14R with my 455 Mini Sniper being the #1 followed by my 20" MTR mounted in an KRG Bravo Chassis. As you may have read online, you're CZ will shoot well out of the box if you win the "CZ accuracy lottery". Before you buy, ask to see the paper test included in each box.

Thanks for a very informative video. I watched a few of your videos today and learned enough to make me subscribe to your channel, however, I have a few questions regarding lot numbers. I get the part about different lots producing different results in different guns. I just went to one of the websites you mention and they list 20+ different lot numbers for a given ammo type. On the extreme, are you suggesting people do a lot test on all available lots? If not, which lots do we choose? I realize this is somewhat a wise-ass question except really what do we do? After we select a reasonable number of lots and test them, we should know which lot produced the best results in our rifle. At this point, we order a bunch of ammo from the preferred lot. This is all well and good until we run out of ammo. Do we then start the testing process all over? I am not trying to be difficult, but I am trying to understand the logic of this. We can't test every lot of every type and brand of ammo, and yet wouldn't that produce the best results. I have been shooting for a while but these questions about lot numbers have been on my mind for some time. I guess my real question might be, how do you limit your selections to reasonable numbers? Thanks again. I look forward to watching more videos.

Hi Hector. So once you initially lot test you would want to buy as much as you can afford. When you do run out look for lots around the same stated mv as the last lot....stated mv rarely matches your actual mv but that doesnt matter.....this will allow you to buy less lots in the future. In a perfect world we could buy enough to never need to test again

My favorite round is the Eley subsonic, period ! But I have had guns that actually shot cheap ammo better ! I'm talking Remington Golden Bullets or Winchester Wildcats ! Each gun is different. Not always the most expensive round that performs. I would should as many different in each gun to find which is the best for that gun. I had a Ruger MkII pistol that ALWAYS outshot my rifles ! I had a T/C 10" single shot, octagonal barrel that was so accurate you could strike matches at close range w/o breaking them !

I picked up a case of Midas from Lapua and multiple cases of Eley. I am going to start weighing my ammo prior to the next match to see if I can avoid those couple of flyers and bump up my scores.

Group question here - What speed are you folks getting for Eley Match? I just lot tested 8 different boxes. Fully understanding that the velocity on the box is a suggestion, I found it much faster than expected. Out of an 18" Shaw barrel in my RPR, clocked from a bench with a LabRadar with a motion trigger at 100yd indoor range. Temp around 65 F. Across the 8 lots tested, Eley Match lots varied from 1118 - 1150 fps, all averaging XS of 20, SD of 7. Some lots were only marginally better, this is aggregate over 200+ shots. That's 50 - 80 fps faster than printed. Very consistent stuff, just much faster than other ammo tested. Some lots of Tenex I had came in at the same speeds (with SD around 3 - 5!), but thankfully it didn't shoot well in this rifle. Center X was 1079 fps, XS of 44, SD of 7 over 60 shots. Exactly as advertised. SK Flatnose Match was 1067 fps, XS of 36, SD of 11 over 100 shots. Also very close to published. Fun part is that all tested ammo had at least one lot number that worked well in this rifle, 1080 and 1130 being the two sweet spots. To note, these numbers are 30-50 fps faster than the factory barrel. Is Match or Tenex running this fast for any of you?

Thanks for that. Am in Australia, which is obviously a piddling market relative to the U.S., and suspect, as a relative newbie to a committed "pursuit of accuracy," that our supply lines won't be as good as yours and we certainly can't get ammunition delivered. You literally have to show up at a shop. Will investigate. Really enjoy your stuff, and thanks again for that prompt response.@@PursuitofAccuracy

I just took delivery of my new 457 varmint MTR and the grouping on the test target was 3/4 inch (1 1/2 MOA). I was expecting better accuracy - at least 1 MOA. Am I stuck with this 1 1/2 inch for the life of the rifle? What were the different groupings of the new 457 MTRs that you bought?
@PursuitofAccuracy
@PursuitofAccuracy 2 жыл бұрын
Test target means nothing honestly. They shoot that with whatever ammo lot they have. Its more of a reliability check and to make sure its ok to ship. It will shoot 1 moa or less with just about any quality ammo

if your gun likes a certain LOT, will you be able to find the same lot eventually? Or does the manufacturer move on to the next sequential LOT in the process. For example, if you find a lLOT of 4567 that your barrell likes, will you be able to find LOT # 4567 a year later or even 5 months later? Or will the manufacturer have moved on to LOT # 4569 or even up to 5000 a year later?

The problem is that during times of ammo shortage I end buying ammo what I can get, not what I want. In my country we cannot get ammo shipped by any courier company, only one is registered to do that and they know it and therefore charge extremely high rates for that. So we end up buying only local. Compared to you calculated at the direct exchange rate, we are paying double and more per box of what you pay. And also we are limited to the amount of ammo we are allowed to buy and be in possession of. You are lucky to be able to buy ammo as much as you want from where you want and get it shipped to you.

I have about a brick of Tenex (1061 FPS) that shoots pretty good in my CZ 457 / Lilja - about .8 MOA. I bought a couple of bricks of another lot rated at 1062 FPS expecting similar results. At 50 yards, 4 five-shot groups averaged 1.5 MOA (1.4 - 1.9). Shot two groups at 100 averaging .8 MOA (.7 & .9). The best 4 in each group averaged .4 MOA. I shot the original 1061 FPS lot and it was consistent at .9 MOA, 50 and 100 yards. Same rifle, same 1-piece rest, same shooter, same day. WTF?
