Hey everyone! Here I watched the classic 1987 action film; Predator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger! This movie actually makes me wanna watch the next one and maybe get on an action binge, I don't know yet 👀 but I really like Predator as a monster/antagonist. His design is equally menacing as it feels realistic which I thought worked perfectly as a hunting villain (basically) in this movie. AND YES I REALIZED AT THE END ITS BECAUSE HE CAN MIMIC LAUGHS I DIDN'T PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER LOL
But I hope you guys enjoy!! Thank you so much 😊

This is a great example of classic movies that prefer "show, not tell" politics in cinema -- long time ago authors respected their audience and treated everybody like true adults that could watch and analyze what they actually see on a screen. And I love to see people watching the movie for their first time and how they come to all the right conclusions -- "it hunts for sport", "it cant see through the mud", "it's too big to kill in one on one combat", etc. Predator is a movie with a simple-minded premise, yet it's smarter than most of modern flicks.

Predator's design was done by Stan Winston. Winston was quickly becoming a big name in creature design and creation. He'd done the make-up and endoskeleton effects in The Terminator, and the updated xenomorph design in Aliens. He went on to do (among many other things) Predator 2 (he put a funny little joke in the background which ended up spawning a whole series), the make-up and practical effects for Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Batman Returns, and the animatronic dinosaurs in Jurassic Park (including the full scale T-Rex). The guy was a legend.
@Gus_Diaz_83

Incorrect. You should actually look this up. Stan Winston did the costume, but ironically it was JAMES CAMERON'S idea whilst sitting next to Winston during a flight. Winston didn't know what to do with the Predator look and feel since the design originally worn by Jeanne Claude Van Dam was terrible. During the flight, Cameron offered to help so he sketched the face and other aspects of the look, which Winston used on the final costume. The mandible flaps, teeth and other iconic parts were all Cameron's idea based on that sketch during their flight. Winston made it, Cameron invented it. Look this up.

25:55 "He knows he can't take him, he's way too strong." 100%!! FUN FACT: The original script had it written in it that it was supposed to end with Arnold Schwarzenegger killing the Predator and winning in the one-on-one hand-to-hand fight, but it was changed at the last minute because Arnold himself was adamant and realistic enough to know that in a real fight, the Predator not only would've won but he would've mopped the floor with him (and he's very right to think that as Arnold stands at 6'2 tall while the Predator stands at a gigantic 7'3!) So the ending was instead changed to Arnold winning the final fight through his wits and traps instead of his brute strength alone.

Really contrasts from actors like Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Vin Diesel, who fill the same kind of muscled/macho action flick hero roles in more recent(ish) years, who literally have it in their contracts they can't be beaten (which is why in Fast and Furious, their characters never lose fights, at best ending in a draw between each other). Its comparatively such a show of differing mindsets that Arnold wanted to evoke the image of being on the backfoot for the theme of the film as opposed to being the obviously unbeatable hero for personal ego. Its the fact it was Arnold at his peak that was scurrying around trying to outwit a more powerful creature that made the film stand out so much. It really hit that sweet spot between Arnold being Arnold and the Predator being shown as an otherworldly threat.

This film is truly iconic! Not only is this movie one of the several others that shot Arnold Schwarzeneggar into super stardom, it was also very influential for video games as well. For those that don’t know, Konami Video designer Hideo Kojima specifically drew inspiration from this movie into the Metal Gear Solid franchise more than once. The invisibility used by the predator was directly referenced and used for the Cyborg Ninja’s (AKA Gray Fox) Stealth camoflague in the first Metal Gear Solid (13:14), while the splinter face paint (6:30), various camoflauge uniforms and jungle terrain were heavy inspiration for Metal Solid Solid 3: Snake Eater.

That is what hunting is really about, playing with your prey while you use weapons and traps to make it safe for you, the challenge is in how much effort you have to put in getting the kill, it is not about the possibility of getting killed during the hunt, or the danger. But he was a really nice guy in real life. Due to his unusual height he often landed creature roles. He was the primary predator in Predator 2. And he was Harry in Harry and The Hendersons. A movie about a family that befriends Bigfoot and brings him home. Its a fun, feel-good flick. In the early 1990s, Kevin Peter Hall was in a bad car accident and was rushed to the hospital. You gotta love the brilliance of this movie. The Tone shifts between each acts. 1st Act; looks like your average, run of the mill 80's testosterones filled action flick with Arny in it. Where you see him and his crew showcase how bad ass they are, by delivering Freedom to Central Americans at 2000 rounds per minute, and where they " got no time to bleed". 2nd Act; they are hunted, out manoeuvred and played with by a Force better than them and with more firepower and advanced tactics. Those "Sexual Tyronnosauruses" are now picked one by one, and the Tension is getting higher and higher, with the Tone shifting into a Thriller/Slasher/Horror movie. 3rd Act: All for it to SHIFT yet again, where the roles are inverted, Arny beeing the Predator and the Predator, beeng the Prey. Where the Man resorts to primitive but efficient tactics, using the Predator advantage of the Terrain against it and even camouflaging himself. All for it to end in a Brawl between the 2 Peak Representants of each respective species, till only one is left. This is a Masterclass of pacing anf tigth script writting.

Remember Billy was certain they were all going to die, I think he was tired of running from certain death, he stopped to face it head on. Most hunting IS "cheating". Hunting is inherently about the superiority of the predator/prey relationship. Using a weapon your prey could never use against you, hiding your scent and concealing your appearance to lure in your target. But you have to limit your advantage to keep it challenging. The Predator was hunting for sport until Arnold started hunting him back. Then it became a real challenge, something worthy of stripping the guns and armor, and going toe to toe.
@hewhoplugwalks
@hewhoplugwalks Жыл бұрын
The book (which has A LOT of changes from the movie, including making the Predator a shape-shifter) actually touches upon Billy a little more. It's stated that he has clairvoyant powers, and his people (he's said to be of Sioux descent) had actually fought a Predator before, making it a kind of generational rivalry/bloodmatch.
@ianfranklin294

The Predators actually use their blades, spears, nets, and other ancient weapons more widely, because they are regarded as more honorable ways of hunting other than just using their active camouflage and plasma cannons. Also, predators fight with a code of honor that they cannot break. They can't hunt old people, children, pregnant women, or those who are too sick or weak to fight. Basically, they can't hurt anything or anyone that isn't a threat.

He wasn't jerking around or moving. It was an easy shot for the Predator to make, yet he hit the injured man with massive internal injuries who was barely clinging to life. If Dutch had moved at the last moment, causing the Predator to hit Poncho through sheer bad luck then I'd chalk it up as a miss, but the implication is that he intentionally killed Poncho. Dutch even mentions earlier that the Predator is hunting them for sport. Most recreational hunters have the common decency to not let an injured prey animal suffer, and as you said the Predator comes from a society where honor is important. This is a must-see 80's classic. So glad you enjoyed it. The creature was created and designed by Stan Winston, the man who brought you the Terminator endoskeleton and the animatronic dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. He's created a number of memorable creatures and FX. Sadly, he passed away some time ago. Predator 2 is a pretty good sequel, which takes place in an entirely different jungle, Los Angeles, and stars Danny Glover.

Strange facts about this movie: -2 of the cast were elected state governors. Arnold, of course, became governor of California, and Jesse Ventura became governor of Minnesota. -Sonny Landham (Billy) had to have bodyguards assigned to him by the studio, not to protect him from others, but to protect others from him, because of his crazy, erratic attitude. -Jean-Claude Van Damme was supposed to play the Predator, but didn't enjoy the costume, and didn't look physically imposing next to the larger actors. He was replaced with Kevin Peter Hall, who also played the helicopter pilot at the end.

The Predator's last moments send shivers down my spine. He stopped before an easy kill, to analyse just what the hell this creature was that had nearly bested him. He wasn't like the other humans. Then he handicaps himself for a one-on-one duel to prove he's the superior hunter, and when he's finally bested, he asks Dutch's question back at him: "What the hell are you?" Then, to rub salt in the wound, he uses Dutch's friend's mimicked laugh to taunt him as he sets Dutch up for one final fuck-you from beyond the grave. You learn so much about their culture and honour code from those moves.

despite being a fairly simple story, it doesn't get boring because the story progresses at a steady pace. There's always some nee development we see the guys > find mysterious bodies > kick some ass > get ass kicked > setup trap > trap fails > new trap > also fails > run away > 1 guy left, and he finds a key advantage (the mud) > becomes the hunter > fights the pred > gets knocked about > wins by a hair. All the while the guys die one by one, while we see more and more of the pred. This is why it's so entertaining, it never lets up, always moving.

It's worth reading up on Predator lore as there are a load of interesting facts about them. They're a race called the Yautja and they live for the hunt! They have a clan system and the more dangerous the prey they kill, the higher up in clan society they progress. They hunt humans because humans are an adaptive, dangerous species who weapons pose a worthy challenge to the hunters. They also have an honour system and won't attack unarmed opponents - or if a dangerous opponent is a female who is pregnant they won't kill them either. I recommend watching Predator 2 - not as good as the first movie but still a good watch.

He wasn't seeing a heat signature. It was more like intelligently augmented vision. It was just too smart. It sampled mud first instead of flesh and it assumed it was solid dirt. The Predator prefers to see what it WANTS to see. And not have other things cluttering his vision. For instance, the Hot forest in the daytime is actually hotter than your body, but he barely saw nature at all. If it were simple thermal vision, or perhaps if The predator weren't using vision tech, Arnold would be dead, because he could indeed see Arnold. Arnold was just the wrong color with the tech. In that first mud scene, you see Arnold in there if you look.

Facts you didn't know about the movie: Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a lizard insect hybrid. He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused. Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, 7'2" was cast as the titular character as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch. Stan Winston Studios designed the PREDATOR suit and would later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2 in 1990. Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches. Arnold would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed. Sonny Landham RIP whom played Billy hired a bodyguard to protect people from him as he was prone to violent outbursts. Landham said in an interview that "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us." It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult. It was 110 degrees in the shade, while it was 42 degrees at night. The film was a box office success making $100 million dollars ($350 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to InnerSpace.

The director's original vision was to make people think they were watching a typical Schwarzenegger, military, shoot'em-up; and then have it slowly morph into a sci-fi horror film.
