Keep going! Check out the next lesson and practice what you’re learning:
www.khanacademy.org/science/a...
What effect do interactions between species have on the sizes of the populations involved? Learn about the dynamics of predator and prey populations, and how they can influence one another’s patterns of growth and decline.
Watch the next lesson: www.khanacademy.org/science/b...
Missed the previous lesson? Watch here: www.khanacademy.org/science/b...
Ecology on Khan Academy: Why are polar bears found only in the Arctic? Why does mildew grow in your shower and not (hopefully) in your sock drawer? Learn how ecologists study the interactions between organisms and their environment, and how these interactions affect where, and in what numbers, different types of organisms are found.
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

Another observation is - there seems to be a delay between prey population increase and preator population increase. This delay is due to brith rates and breeding season etc .
@bearswithglasses
@bearswithglasses 10 ай бұрын
In larger species like the Canadian lynx, yes... there can be a significant delay. This is not always the case... when you're dealing with bacteria, for example, who have a faster reproduction rate, there is a very small delay because they can turn prey into offspring quickly.

Sometimes when I'm watching highly fascinating and informative videos like these I'll be multitasking. Like, I'll be listening to the lesson but also polishing my zippo lighter, or cleaning out my ears, practicing limbo, or cutting my toenails. Ever do that, and the piece of nail flies into another dimension? I mean, a room is only so big, right? But despite spending a disproportionate amount of time searching, the nail clipping can never be found. My theory is that it simply doesn't exist anymore. Not in our plane of existence at least. So I adopted that theory. The next step, as dictated by the scientific method, was to experiment and either prove or disprove my hypothesis. So I went to Asda and purchased the largest makeshift enclosure I could find (and those lovely Extra Special Cumberland Pork Sausages), which was an oversized vacuum bag for storing bed linens, pillows, comforters, or those Christmas sweaters made by the ladies of our congregation for the residents of an assisted living home for unwed fathers with learning disabilities. It was a tight fit, but being a very petite lady I was able to fit inside. I then sealed the bag, to rule out any variables and ensure that the nail clippings would most certainly be trapped within the containment area....IF they were even part of our universe anymore. So I began cutting my nails, filled with excitement at the thought of finally having verifiable data and bringing this experiment to a conclusion which I would then be able to publish. And a conclusion is exactly what I got! However, it was at this time I realized that I had foolishly left the water running in the kitchen. You see, our kitchen is quite far from the boiler, and it takes a good amount of time until it would become hot enough to wash the pans, plates, silverware, grapefruit knife, pastry-crimper, egg cups, vintage butter molds, our wonderfully innovative never-soggy cereal bowls, and some of the tools used by the Mohel from the ceremony on Friday, which were all dirty and waiting for a good scrub. I had turned it on and completely forgot I'd done that. What a silly cow I am. So while quickly trying to open the seal and race over to the kitchen I slipped on something gooey/slimy on the floor, and ended up injuring my anterior superior iliac spine, which took weeks to completely heal. But in the end, I'm just happy I was able to test my theory which, interestingly, spawned new theories due to the rather unexpected results of my initial experiment. I won't spoil the wonderful surprise of course, I know you are all absolutely rabid with curiosity but being the logical and disciplined people I know you to be you'll want to read my published and peer-reviewed results, which is in the Catholic Parish of Staines newsletter. Bless you all. Each and every one.

Why do we only see these extremes? Could it happen for those lines to be both in the middle ?
@vorfolomeishishkotrjas9089
@vorfolomeishishkotrjas9089 8 жыл бұрын
It can, but then come disease, wildfires, other random factors and the lines are all over the place again. This cycle is somewhat stable thing while equal population that you imply is not.

is it possible that there will be a constant density of predators but the density of prey will continue to increase? if it happens in nature then in what circumstances can it happen?
@bearswithglasses
@bearswithglasses 10 ай бұрын
Yes, we see this all of the time because of *human interference.* Animals like elk will continue to increase as long as humans are killing their natural predators (like wolves) who otherwise would be keeping the population in check. Other factors can include disease/parasites, or even natural disasters. Doing a PhD in Natural + Human Ecology. :D Keep in mind though that not all predator-pray oscillations are as clean as the snowshoe hare and the Canadian lynx (which is why this one is so often used in textbooks); there can be a large number of factors influencing population size/growth/decline.

Do we have enough data to simulate the entire world, with all the different species on earth? It would be great to help mankind to build a sustainable world, what do you think?
@Staytruegoggins
@Staytruegoggins 5 жыл бұрын
there is . its impossible to simulate with existing compute powers. Weather data alone requires supercomputers to give accurate predictions

As far as I know, no. Given the fact that we're still discovering new species every year... and we can't even quantify all of the relationships existing between organisms we already know about... this doesn't seem to be a likely outcome anytime soon. Also, a lot of organism interactions are quite complex, so it's not so easy to replicate them with mathematical modeling. In fact, all models currently available to ecologists/biologists are simplified versions of real interactions... so the idea of being able to accurately simulate all the species on earth seems a few hundred... or maybe thousands... of years off. Would be interesting though.

I don't think this is right. From the way he's explaining the predator population is the inverse of the prey, or the second derivative. But from what I've seen and the data, it's more like the first derivative.
