I dont think its just a coincidence that the line about inefficiencies occurs at the same time as having a human being inspected by a robot. Ultimately a human is a very inefficient machine when compared to the capability's and efficiency of even todays robots, future AI + robotics will make humans obsolete in the workplace.

Mary, did I detect some emotion at 10:23? I know I have a great awe for what this video and company means. This is the future, and you got to share the announcements to some of the first major steps in making self controlled robots an everyday thing. Next step is Atlas turning into the NS-1 from I, Robot...

It is definietely good technology in my opinion. However I would have a question for Boston Dynamics: how can this compare to IIoT? I mean, for example if I would need to monitor a pump, flow, temperature, etc. I could just put a sensors which tell me the values in preset intervals (seconds, minutes, hours, ...). What/where is the extra value with spot?
@splooie02

I don't know much about the environments Spot would be working in, but it's possible the expense of a $75,000 (plus operating costs) robot would be cheaper than replacing a piece of equipment that can't return the information you need through sensors, or if you want to verify that a sensor isn't malfunctioning. I imagine there is a huge difference between safely dispatching a human in the middle of the night to verify an anomalous reading on a chemical plant reactor vs. a robot. Bottom line: Spot can't file for worker's comp.

This looks like it could help companies stay on top of maintenance and to manage hazardous situations. The questionable downside could be a potential malicious hack of spot, and or, the system that enables the hacker to hide existing problems or to prevent needed remedial measures from being taken. It sounds like they will not have it connected to the internet, but that does not mean that the system, and or, spot could not be hacked by a malicious actor.

I wonder if is already needed to be implemented the Three Laws of Robotics? Can it be done? I'm referring to all A.I./robotic systems. What's the Boston Dynamics opinion about that? Is that necessary already? Or, at least, can it be done? Those laws to be inserted into the complex dynamic algorithms of an A.I.? With a 1st priority, of course. Or, even a hardware with those laws inserted directly to CPU...? May I have an answer please!
@christophkogler6220

The idea of applying a moral framework to AI systems is very interesting and becoming increasingly important as they become more intelligent, so this is a good line of thinking. 'I wonder if is already needed to be implemented the Three Laws of Robotics? Can it be done? I'm referring to all A.I./robotic systems.' - Asimov's 'three laws' are a science fiction idea that don't hold up that well to complex moral or philosophical interrogation. In a fashion, they could be applied; but you could never realistically apply it to ALL AI / robotic systems, because bad actors could just reverse engineer the ones that are safe to build a system without any safeties. 'What's the Boston Dynamics opinion about that? Is that necessary already? Or, at least, can it be done?' - Boston Dynamics isn't one of the groups making 'intelligent' AI (which I'm guessing holds much more of the concern). Spot (and Atlas) are highly reactive robots that navigate to a location. While extremely impressive feats of engineering - they aren't 'intelligent'. 'Those laws to be inserted into the complex dynamic algorithms of an A.I.? With a 1st priority, of course. Or, even a hardware with those laws inserted directly to CPU...? May I have an answer please!' - You wouldn't be able to just 'insert' that kind of reasoning into an AI or the CPU, it basically has to be built into the AI from the ground up. I personally believe that the closest thing to the 'three laws' that would be flexible enough to be viable in the real world is trying to provide the AI some form of universal morals. Something vaguely like 'benefit people as much as you can while doing no harm'. Of course, it would have to be much more nuanced than that in reality.

Spot costs $75K - If that can give you a 5% increase in productivity I think a lot of large companies would take it - And if you have to put 10% less of your workers in dangerous situations or make them work night shift, even better - get them doing something Spot can't do
