Heitor Villa-Lobos was a Brazilian composer in the turn of the 20th century. He was a multi-instrumentalist and in many ways is the most famous Brazilian composer in history. An avid guitarist himself, his solo guitar repertoire is considered to be at the core of 20th century guitar repertoire despite it being relatively small. Consisting of 12 etudes, a Choro, a Brazilian popular suite and 5 preludes, this piece is the first of those preludes.
