The bloodiest day in American history didn't spring up out of nowhere. Prior to the Battle of Antietam, McClellan and the Army of the Potomac had caught up to Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at the South Mountain range. One of the clashes that occurred in the prelude to Antietam was at a pass known as Crampton's Gap.

Thanks for covering the Maryland campaign in it's entirety. Antietam was perhaps the most consequential battle of the war. Yes, more so than even the Big One a year later up in Pennsylvania.

I grew up on a farm a couple of miles from here. My school bus used to turn around at the tree where General Reno died after he was mortally wounded and taken from the nearby battlefield.

I, as most here, am a history buff and moved to Maryland about 30 years ago. I live at the base of South Mountain with Fox Gap, Turner gap and Crampton gap about a mile or so away with Antietam Battlefield naturally right over the mountain. When you hike these steep battlefields, see the markers where canons rained fire and commanders and soldiers died in hand to hand struggles. The stubborn attitude of both sides to fight on this terrain where movement could be seen for miles and it necessary to climb into hails of bullets. I never tire of the history of this area. My wife grew up on the Monacacy battlefield outside Frederick, MD. where Lees battle plans were recovered. When the Confederates marched into Maryland through Middletown, where I live, they were met with a very chilly welcome. Being met by two young girls waving the US flag, Stonewall Jackson remarked to his staff "We have no friends here" and was later chased by Union Forces where they tried to stall the Union coming into the South Mountain passes. Battle raged until the Confederates fell back and the terrible Antietam battle happened. A great video here my friends and more on the battles like Gettysburg are amazing. Thank you for them. **The wind does really rip regularly up the valley here if you come to visit.

My great-great-great-grandmother's brother, Stephen Treadwell, died of wounds suffered at Crampton's Gap. I managed to visit the battlefield a couple of years ago.

Years ago I used to drive up and sit at the War Correspondents Memorial and just enjoy the view. At that time I knew it was part of the Battle of South Mountain but didn't pay much attention to that. Back in the mid 70s I visited Crampton's Gap, and then Turner's Gap on the way to Antietam Battlefield. I'm sure it is not like it was then as I never got far from the road. I would like to go back but your videos brought back some nice memories. I took some slides of that trip and they have probably faded away. Thanks for finding the time to visit Crampton's Gap.

Interesting story. Right after you left the church in Burkettsville at the road to your right (before going up the steeper of the two grades) is known locally as "Spook Hill." as the legend goes, if you go there late at night, on the night of a full moon, and park just below the intersection, the soldiers ghosts will come out of the woods and push your vehicle uphill into town (and out of the way) so that they can continue the fight.

Thanks JD. This part of the country is a welcome place to visit and full of history. We still have family in the area. One of our former family farms was just off the Western Slope of South Mountain in Washington County. Our mother inherited the black walnut dining room set made by a company out of Baltimore. We broke bread many times on a table Union troops may have done the same on during this campaign.

Another awesome video thanks JD the civil war is a great interest to me because of my family's history. My great GG Grandpa was Patrick Henry who had a nephew Joe Johnson who was the commanding officer of Army of Northern Virginia, but was wounded at battle of Fair Oaks and was replaced by Lee so he was my distance cousin and my Great G Grandpa Haley was in 2nd New York Calvary and was wounded by a piece of cannon ball to head around 1to2pm on July 3 1863 at Gettysburg you tell a great story and JD is a great that was my first name and my friends and family still call JD Thank again 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I was in 4th grade when the Blair Witch came out. My dad took me as that was our thing. One day after I saw the movie, my mom had asked me to go grab some meat out of our extra freezer in the basement. It was night and nerves got the best of me. Thought I saw something out of the corner of my eye grabbed the meat and ran. Well …. I didn’t shut the freezer all the way and ended up defrosting about $800 worth of meat. I was banned from watching horror movies for a while 😂

blair was the old name of burkittsville. true story, but the movie was filmed in patapsco state park, not burkittsville. plus, you should place your car in neutral to watch it roll uphill.

Since my hometown is Blairstown, N.J, I had people ask if that's where the Blairwitch was filmed, I said, no, the original Friday the 13th was filmed there but, the Blairwitch was filmed in Burkittsville, M.D.

My understanding from another map was that the 15th nc was attached here to cobbs brigade, and in that brigade was Jesse D. Helms. Jesse was shot in the leg and captured for the 3rd time. He was the grandfather or great grandfather of the former Senator Jesse Helms. Also I believe that Rutherford B Hayes and William McKinley were fighting here for the union. Hayes got injured here.

Do you plan on doing the Battle of Chickamauga at all? My great-great-great grandpa was there, he was a wounded POW, he was in the 4th KY Mounted Infantry for the Union. I tried to find info on him as far as how he was wounded and the rifle he has in his photo.

It's a lot easier to make videos on subjects when you're already in the area where those conflicts happened and/or have connections to experts and extensive information.

My brother did that to me once! Ona bridge, he stopped the car, got out, climbed under the bridge, waited for me to get out of the car to look for him, he then jumped up!! In the dark, ya!!! Crazy times
