I was surprised when Premam became a big hit outside Kerala because a lot of it is so rooted in the culture, along with a lot of references from old films, actors and dialogues that could never make the same sense when translated. When someone outside India is watching, however familiarized they are with the movies, they are still gonna miss a lot. There are lots of bits and pieces in it which are more noticeable in rewatches which I don't think too many people outside of Kerala would really get.

Tbh there was a lot of tamil dialogues in the movie plus some added bits like the kanmani song running in the background and two tamil songs in the movie, so the language disconnect wasn't really felt atleast for the tamilians who got mad about the movie.

@@lwlwmmm6196 even if there isn't any disconnect, there are still a lot that can be missed. For example the actor who played his dad is a famous scriptwriter and the English dialogue he speaks is from the suoerhit movie Commissioner movie that he wrote in the 90s which is shown along with the beloved bgm from that movie. There are a few more scenes that uses dialogues and music from other movies like that. There were also a lot of small moments that are more noticeable in rewatches. But I do agree that Tamilians will be able to connect with the movie the most after Malayalees.

Bakery: its just a common profession most keralaits get into as recepies are known. Bakery/cafe business in India doesnt require a passion for cooking/baking. It just need a business minded man.... Hero here is a rich spoiled kid who wasted his college life and malar happened to be only best memory in his life... he definitely gets matured and hook into some profession from that he make money... the lesson you looking for.. he just being practical. All that magic about love dating has dead now in him. A typical 30s man in India will look out for settle down with a girl. A girl that's all matter. He is now direct in speaking his mind. He don't need to be kind to girls, being kind he gain nothing... Celine likes his honesty in showing the real emotions (not fabricated to please a girl).. its a small town and Celine knows him by person and she just feel safe with a known guy than that ass hole her family choosen. Premium just tells a story of a random guy from a random town... lesson is simple. Don't take life seriously. Life is a box of chocolate. You never know what would you get.

Students in Kerala don't always go in the path they studied. Many of my seniors (commerce/business and even engineers) opened up restaurants right next to the university after their graduations! xD That's just how it is. The other thing is that it's very common for college students to drink in Kerala. Some also get into smoking, but drinking at a young age doesn't always reflect on their attitudes. Inter-college and intra-college fights are common as well. We've had multiple fights in our hostels because some idiots didn't like the taunts at a basketball game. -_-

@@FlashFromDC I just stated what I've seen. I'm neither proud nor ashamed because I just studied there, and not from there. The fights are definitely wrong, the smoking is bad, but the drinking is debatable. Some of my friends drank during occasions but were nice people in general who didn't have a temper. Ruining one's health is a personal choice, no? You can tell them to be careful and mindful, but can't really tell "you shouldn't", because that would be forcing them. Also, you can't really do anything about the drinking because the youth see their fathers and uncles do it, so, they're influenced, which then gets passed to the next generation.

This movie was a wild fire of trends in 2015, like: 1. The style how the story came to be told, with the most realistic and practical way. Rather than exaggerating action or heroism. 2. Beard styled with Black shirt & kerala mundu/ 3. Red velvet cake 4. "Malare" trended and till date the most popular song. As the song conveys a lot of emotions(lyrics) and it matches with the scenes combined. 5. Yes, the fiancé that was planned to marry (Celine - 3rd Girl) and got beaten up is the Director of the movie. 6. This movie's core actors and team including Director, music director are all close friends. This was their 2nd movie after their success with "Neeram". 7. There was piracy issue at the time, when all the theaters were running House Full. As the pirated movie was uncut and had a lot of scenes that was removed from the final cut. The piracy theory was conveyed recently during 2021 malayalam movie "JAVA"(which was good, more related to multiple investigations).

When the movie was released Sai Pallavi's role was kept hidden. There was a lot of mystery surrounding the character. When people went to theatre, the role 'Malar Miss' was like a hidden Easter egg. In fact this was Sai Pallavi's debut as an actress. Girls were raving about how beautiful Sai is without donning makeup like mainstream actresses does on screen. People came to the theatre to see 'George' but went with 'Malar Miss' in their hearts.

I agree with what you said, Premam was a huge hit here and when I watched it I wasn't as impressed as I expected. It was good as a feel good chill movie but definitely wasn't my fav. I loved the malar plot in the story though. I needed to know the characters more in depth. It was an interesting one and visually it was really good. There is so much cultural references that you might have missed, I would recommend banglore days, it is something everyone can watch, a strong story, amazing performance and perfectly put together. It has Fahad Fazil who you are familiar with from kumblangi nights and Nivin Pauly from this movie. I highly recommend that.

Premam can be quite confusing for a non-Indian. Its very colloquial with many of its references and dialogues - many of which doesn't make sense when translated into English. But like you said this was most definitely the Malayalam equivalent of a Richard Linklater movie. The director's debut film though, Neram, is much more straightforward and story oriented. It was a quite compelling movie for its low budget. Premam was wildly successful in Kerala though. It was so huge when it first came out it caused stampedes, there were recommendations being made for tickets from celebrities and political figures, and people were rewatching it like crazy.

I knew this movie was a blockbuster in 2015. Being a Tamilan, I never watched the movie. However I watched this movie few months ago with subtitles and I really liked the movie especially the heart break scene with malar. It was one of the most emotionally shot scenes that I have ever seen. May be it is because we all have had heart breaks in our lives and we’re able to connect with that feeling. In India, most of the first love ends up in heart break. I agree with many in this group that foreigners may not resonate with this movie. I can see jaby’s body language during reaction. He is not interested in the movie. He has been discussing about camera and angles. Achaea was excited. But her final summary is that she is not liking protagonist. Premam is a gem in Indian cinema and will remain so.

I saw this movie in my 20s. Even as a girl, I could relate to this movie and felt nostalgic because I have seen boys in my school college time who were like this. And at that age we kind of idolise and crush on brash and outgoing rough men. Now in my 30s I see what you see. I feel the same way as you discussed. The main character never learned anything or changed his way. He is there, things happening to him. Things are given to him and taken away from him. He mad about it, does nothing and living with it. That's it. Thank you. Many of them may go harsh on you guys for giving such open mature reviews. People in Kerala tend to cling to nostalgia and old feelings more than to change themselves. Thank you for bringing about the change of view for me on this movie. And it was necessary.

The trend here in Malayalam movies is pretty much like real life. Everyone in their mind is a Protagonist. But for everyone else you may be a Antagonist. In real life you can't be always good. Like that here the main character here is not someone who is always correct or he may not learn from his mistakes. He was totally himself. He didn't assess himself too much. Here is the story of someone who is not a good guy or a bad guy just living his life. Pupil here in Kerala could really connect to his character, since all of us had similar experiences in one way or the other.

Thing is that you're loosing small details inside the story, like its shown they have already failed in school for a year, and their current age at college is 21 and a guest lecturer could be as young as 24 here. And some cultural nuances that will be hard for you to follow (even for north indians ), this movie is full of such stuffs, thats the basic essence of this movie. And thats why movie became such a pathbreaking movie of this generation down here at south. And there are many little things on entertainment level that malayalis will only get, like the George's dad character is ranji panciker who was a leading screenwriter in malayalam @90s who penned many blockbuster political thrillers with long english dialogues at that time, so its like spoofing himself with that english dialogue he says here, also that music is from his superhit movie 'commisioner'. so you would find hard to get the real essence of south indian films(barring the mass masala movies). I think jaby has already said before he find it hard to enjoy movies like super deluxe and kumbalangi nights, but he enjoyed 2.0 more.

@@abhijith8640 thats true he havent watched before series of ric linklater, but he compares this movie to them, thats a stupid analogy. You could compare movie 96 to before sunset, but not this. And the base outline of this movie is comparing love to the life cycle of a butterfly, 3 stages. from pupa, catterpiller to butterfly, even the cinematography is built on that, before giving authentic reviews to their 2 million subscriber , a bit more work and effort has to be put on understanding cinema language of each culture

@Jaby and @Achara This movie might be a bit of a problem for non-Indians/Non-Malayalis to understand. It was one of the biggest blockbusters of the decade and mainly because of the realistic nature of the movie that was expressed in a humorous way and the movie had lots of emotions that we, as people from Kerala, completed our education in the colleges and schools in Kerala, with all the cultural and variations in expressing emotions, this was a great movie. I could personally relate to the 2nd part of the movie to some extent and I was literally very emotional when George was crying that bad. And I can really relate to the spontaneous actions/reactions of George to get Celine. He did not go for any Melo-dramas and didn't wanted to take that chance of trying to know a girl once again, date her and finally get rejected/lose her. So, I think that's why he just went for it rather than spending/wasting a whole lot of time trying to deal with the emotions related to finding his love. I got married to the girl in almost the similar way. After losing my first love...and blah blah blah....I did not wanted to go for another setback. I just proposed my now wife at the church and asked her out. That was my gut instinct and I didn't even know anything about her for the fact that I had seen her previously only once briefly in a friends party. Now we are happily married for the last 3 years. My friend at church really admired my guts to propose her straight without any ground knowledge about her and she becoming my wife. I still believe, the only reason I moved from Calgary to Vancouver was to meet this girl and nothing else. Regarding the business part, it is common among the youngsters in Kerala after their college, to start some business based on either their education or their skills/interest/extra curricular activities. It's like, I studied social work and working in a healthcare sector. But, I also have a business of teaching IELTS and CELPIP and I am running an institute for the same. Thanks

Fact: When this movie got released, youngsters(across Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh) were thronging theatres and were so crazy about the movie that they skipped their classes. In Kerala, students from various schools and colleges were detained by the police as a part of Operation Gurukulam following the complaints given by staffs from the respective institutions. There was also a vandalism case in a theatre because the screening was stopped in between due to some technical issue. This movie actually earned a cult status.

I appreciate jaby for taking his time to watch a Malayalam movie. So thank you jaby so much. He rarely does this. I know he has a lot of things going on in his real life. For the commenter saying jaby is bored or not into the story or achara is smarter then jaby. It like you ever love reading books. Why the you are watching videos instead of reading books. Are you visual learner then. Then jaby is visual learner. Archara is a bookworm. Is that simple. Just stop showing the your double edge sword against jaby. He is non indian and non Malayalee. You can't expect him to read subtitle. If we are not reading subtitle when we are watching movies. Why should he watch movies with subtitle? Majority of us even hardly a touch book. We can see that from george from point of view. Since when George touched a book in this film in the college. We here is all about soical life. Jaby will think like that. This video tells that malayalam films are dialogue heavy fast and same with subtitle. Jaby has unique talent then achara. He looks at how the scene is shot and take the meaning out of it. He does not have to understand the story or enjoy the film like many of us. He can enjoy of a film watching a scene. Why not we read erotic novel instead of looking at playboy magazine or those vouge magazine. Come on guys give him break and appreciate his viewing skills for once.

Well I graduated in Hotel Management and ended up working random BPO jobs for almost 13 years and then became a content writer and translator. Education system in India is such exceptions being those who study Engineering and Medicine where majority of them continue to work in the field in which they specialized in college.

It's very common in kerala where they learn in college something and do something different in their future and it doesn't have to be something your interested. My uncle did engineering and now he owns a restaurant, it was out of nowhere 😂. Many mallus are in business for no apparent reason 😂.

Very good review. Your observations are a true mirror to Keralites on the social conditioning we get from college. Don’t get me wrong, we all enjoy our college days. But too many of us go into “higher education” for the sake of it, not to pursue a passion but just to satisfy social requirement, be hooligans or be at the mercy of political parties.

I totally agree with you the fact he didn't learn anything. But I've got say that u missed a lot jaby. In every scene and dialogue there are many references and cultural appropriation that it's hard for others to understand. That's y this movie is a big deal in keral and tamil nadu. Telegu tried to remake this but failed in making this. This movie has many components that only touches the original audience ( Malayalam and Tamil). But thanks for the movie review. 😀

@Jaby! Hi there … first of all a big thanks to you.. your DM (you replied to my dm actually)helped a lot at a point of time when I was under depression. Your text brought a smile on my face after a long 6 months… as for the movie … George in college is a typical Kerala popular guy behaviour… where he has all the power among other students and all are basically either scared or respect them…Also the guy who gets beaten. Up in the end is the director of the movie… Alphonse Puthren

Watch Lucifer (Malayalam movie not the series). That's a movie an international audience can connect to well because of its making and subtitles. It's also the biggest blockbuster in Malayalam industry till date and the second installment to that movie is in its production stage. It's available on prime.

To really enjoy you really need to get the context. Pretty much everyone born in Kerala between 1975 to 1985 can correlate to the content. Interesting thing is that very few from my Dad's generation liked this movie. The college life is very raw, with politics mixed up. Trying to correlate the culture with a background of schools in the west would be really tough
