I am SO grateful to see someone with a platform take on Ted Dekker's newer writings. I used to read and encourage my student to read some of his books...he was one of my favorites. Then his theology shifted and then completely changed. I've done what I can to point it out to those who read him now, but I've not seen anyone publically shining light on these deceptive and worldly ideas.

@15:45 Yes, yes! I love what you said about passages over single verses! I loved this switch in our home too. Some verses work well with individual verse learning - particularly certain verses in proverbs. But mostly, we do passages. Also, I so appreciate that message @17:05 about parents being the primary discipler of their children, and how any children’s/youth ministry should be supporting parents, challenging them in their role of discipleship, not attempting (and in most cases, failing) to do it for them. We use Charlotte Mason’s method for education, which includes recitation pieces each 12-week term, and below is the recommendations for ~1st-3rd grades (her Form I): a psalm, a ~6 verse passage from the OT covered in Bible lessons in the term, a ~6 verse passage from the NT covered in Bible lessons, a poem, and a hymn (learning the spoken words). (Possible extra: a parable) We say them often enough that the children who are capable of memorizing it are able to, and children who have difficulty with memorization become so familiar with the passage and hide it in their heart all the same. The focus is not on memorization, but on familiarity, understanding, and speaking it well and with the proper meaning communicated in speech. Our current term‘s recitation for my 6yo includes: Psalm 84 Numbers 21:4-9 Acts 2:36-42 The Lamb by William Blake (I also read The Tyger sometimes too because it pairs so well) What a Friend We Have in Jesus Parable: Mark 4:21-25 I try to capture an episode in my verse selections, though of course it will still only be a part of the whole. As you may guess, we are reading in Exodus & Numbers for OT, and Mark & Acts for NT. 😁

@31:50 And a 2nd amen on ditching Children’s Bibles! I never could deal with those, googly-eyed or goony-cartoony illustrations, not to mention the condescension of the loss of words. We must not hinder, devalue, belittle, or offend our children coming to Jesus. We should bring them straight to His Word and let it work on them directly. As far as versions - I heard Mike Winger describe the translations and how they’re based on reading levels. And as far as reading goes - something I’m very passionate about, haha - the child’s listening and understanding level is above their reading level until high school. So when they are reading to themselves, NLT and NIV are good for beginning readers. But as far as us reading to them, yes, we use a mix of ESV, NASB, NKJV, and KJV sometimes too. I grew up with a pastor who read out of KJV, and he did it so beautifully and well that I was able to benefit from it greatly. The children’s bibles given by the church to all 1st graders was NIV though, so we weren’t exclusive. Reading the KJV is a beautiful thing, but it’s best to hear it read aloud from someone already familiar with the passage and practiced in the language, so they communicate well some of the meaning - a good recitation. I think regularly hearing KJV helped with classic literature and Shakespeare too, which was a great benefit. Mike Winger suggested using HCSB and NET Versions also, so I’m trying to add those into the mix too 😂

Finding life application in the examples of people in scripture, isn't the problem. The problem is in missing (or never teaching) the core and overarching message.
