Great video here of a study of high altitude climbers' response to low oxygen and stress. It was a Uof California physician/researcher who conducted the study on McKinley with some very hardened mountaineers. This is very special. It has as much to do with physiology as it does strength and determination. During the study on the ascent it was the woman who had one of the strongest/adaptable physiology. I think it had to do with the body's control of core temperature in extremes.

Jacob Stephen the money that the Sherpa is getting paid is what is going to feed that sherpas family. Y’all need to stop with the Sherpa comments. It is literally their job and it’s been that way since forever.

The sherpa went up the mountain by his free will! Just the way a airline pilot flies the airplane you fly to your vacation to the Sherpa guides/aids the climber.

@@andreware6492 A prime example of a chutiya... its all free will until your kid needs education,, and you telling me there is a choice for the sherpa to not go up and earn some money?

Melissa only climbed with one Sherpa for this trip who is a personal friend of hers. She actually started the Juniper Fund after the Nepal earthquake to help families of Sherpa that lost their lives in the earthquake as well as the additional funds going to other Sherpa families that has lost family members guiding on Everest.

@@tatum2739 Exactly. What they get paid on one trek is what the average Nepalese citizen makes in a year. And at the end of the day, they don't have to do it. They do it for the money, like every other person who has a job.

Damien Gildea I know it's really not fair, but if a climber doesn't manage to come down safe from a summit, then his ascension doesn't count as a success. So Francys barely made it to the top without supplemental oxygen, but couldn't handle the descent without supplemental oxygen, that's the point. The whole thing is to go up and down safe, not to just reach the top and that's it.

What sort of achievement is that when you have everything already set up by locals and even your bag is carried by sherpas? That is a lame. At least, be a real mountaineer and carry your own stuff. This is no achievement whatsoever, a sherpa could easily do that.

Sad but very wrong for you to say that you'd rather have died God is the giver of life and you should be thankful that you woke up the next morning, you know, if that Sherpa would have been asked, he would have wished to be alive, or maybe traded places with you, I am very certain that at the moment of the fall he was crying out to God to save him, yet you are here wishing you'd have died. No one wants to be in position.
