In this video we're going to set up part of the Lost Mines of Phandelver adventure in Foundry and then go through how to run the game and what that looks like from the point of view of the DM and the players.

These videos have helped me a TON!!! I now feel like I have enough information to give this a full go with my players. I was just using excel spreadsheets that I had placed my maps into.. all cut up and I was sharing my screen and would paste pieces of the map as they discovered a room. This is so much better!

Great video! I have really enjoyed following along with your tutorials. Of course each DM may do their walls differently, but I like to try and keep as much secrecy as I can. So even if there is nothing beyond the cave wall, I might still use standard walls because there is always a possibility of a secret door. They don't know there isn't one.

Thanks for this overview too - For the bottom section of the map with the alternative entrance, is there a way to make the illumination range a bit smaller - it seemed the players were able to see the shadow of the halls that they probably wouldn't have been aware of or would that require overriding the global setting

You‘re videos are awesome, this is absolutely helpful, thank you! I did find Foundry VTT two days ago, yesterday watched your first 6 videos and on the evening got Dungeon World ready to play for first session oncoming Tuesday, so easy if you know how to. Regarding D&D5 I‘m not sure if I will switch from Fantasy Grounds. I really like that the players don‘t have to load a program and how easy things are done, especially the handling with the secret doors and such stuff. Time will tell, but I‘m looking forward to first test session with players.

Another stellar tutorial! I’m curious how a scene starts since you mentioned the possibility of having two scenes depending on where the players “come in”. In Roll20 I hate the the players just drag their tokens onto the map wherever they want.
@EncounterLibrary
@EncounterLibrary 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the kind words! I think I follow the question but let me know if I misunderstood. Quick background: There's a couple ways you can change the 'Active' scene in Foundry that your players are in. In the 'Scenes' tab in the sidebar you can right click a new scene and hit 'Activate' or in that same right click menu there's an option for 'Toggle Navigation'. If you hit that it will place the scene in your Navigation bar at the top of the window. You can have as many scenes up there as you want and you can right click and select 'Activate' to move all your players to that scene. To control where your players start when you activate a scene you can just place their tokens on the map before you activate it. As the GM you can move between scenes without bringing your players over so you can easily jump over to a new scene, move the tokens to a different starting area and then activate the scene forcing all of your players to that location. If you wanted it to be really fast you could also just duplicate the original scene, move the tokens, and rename it so its clear which one is which. Then you can activate whichever scene is appropriate based on their entrance. I hope that answered the question properly; please let me know if I missed the real question or something wasn't clear!

Great video! Thanks for it. I have a request for you; how can we have “material” in Foundry VTT? I mean, let’s say that I have created a new class, or new spell, or new whole bunch of things for my homebrew Dragonlance Campaign, with all the classes, new rules, races, etc (which indeed, it’s true), how can I import all that material into Foundry VTT, so it’s accesible to me and to my players as new options?
@EncounterLibrary
@EncounterLibrary 4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you liked it! For getting additional material into the application Foundry uses something called 'Compendium Packs' which are where I pulled things like the goblins and bugbears from. You can create your own compendiums with new information but unfortunately there's not a whole lot of documentation about them available. The compendium packs are basically big files filled with something called JSON (basically just keys and values that describe the person, item, class etc.). You can take a look at the existing compendium packs for fifth edition to get an idea of what goes into them here: gitlab.com/foundrynet/dnd5e/-/tree/master/packs. They're not the easiest thing to grok but unfortunately that's about the best that I can do information-wise until I'm able to dive into them more. For things like Dragonlance since it's copyrighted material there probably will never be an official compendium pack for it as distributing it without a license from Wizards of the Coast would be illegal. I do eventually want to dive into what goes into creating compendium packs but it's not really a near-term goal as I try to get a base level of content out there that should get everyone up and running with the basics. Sorry that I can't be of more help here!

@EncounterLibrary

Unfortunately you can't import them and have the walls/door automatically detected because DNDBeyond doesn't include that information in their map images (and they'll probably never include it unless the VTT space gets wildly popular). If you use a map creation tool like DungeonDraft though you can import your maps with walls, doors, windows, and light sources already set up though!

Hi there, great video. I'm on the fence on buying in, hope you can answer this to help me decide. The tools are wonderful and I see a lot of potential for homebrewed campaigns and worldbuilding- But for those of us that cant prep that or even this (which I'm seeing you uploaded the map, the system and copied descriptions). I'm coming from FG and Roll20 and I'm looking for everything to be set and automated, is this possible here? I heard you could upload PDFs but couldnt find a video that showed the results and just how much of it was done. Also, modules of big adventures that im guessing has things automated? I'm specifically looking to go in with Pathfinder and its Adventure Paths.. Thanks for reading.
@EncounterLibrary
@EncounterLibrary 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Luis, I'd love to help! Unfortunately for Pathfinder there's not currently any support for pre-written adventures like there is for Fantasy Grounds and Roll20. Atropos (the developer) is trying to communicate with publishers to so that he can provide those though. There's no timeline on when that kind of thing might be available however. If you run D&D you *can* import adventures from DnDBeyond using the VTTA DnDBeyond Importer module (which I have a video on as well). It will automatically bring in the map, all the journal entries and descriptions, and place walls etc. for you. It won't place monsters for you (at least the last time I tested it) but it should serve as a pretty big time saver. With regards tot he PDF uploader, there is a module that lets you upload PDFs to Foundry but it just makes it so you can read the PDF in Foundry. It doesn't go through and grab maps or anything like that. If that's all you need then it could be a good solution though! One last important note is that there's a couple of full blown adventures that are available and installable through Foundry. There's Clash at the Kobold Cauldron and The Cycle of Cerberus which include fully walled and lit maps, placed tokens, pre-written journals containing all the descriptions, etc. etc. Some creators like Tom Cartos are also offering their maps to their patrons fully walled and lit as Foundry modules which might also be of interest to you. Sorry I couldn't give you more good news but hopefully that will at least help your decision making process!

@@EncounterLibrary thank you very munch for the full answer. Not the best news but hopefully they'll get them to work with them soon. There isnt much content on Roll20 for Pathfinder either, just on FG. I'm guessing PF2 has the same problem on Foundry? Might look into those full adventures... or give the VTT time to get content.

I was trying to set up maps from Icespire Peak (the adventure from the Essentials Kit) using the maps from D&D Beyond. Either I'm dumb, or the provided files have an inconsistent grid on them. It's impossible to match in Foundry because when one square is accurate, 20 squares to the right it's like 50% off. I'm "beyond" frustrated.
@EncounterLibrary
@EncounterLibrary 3 жыл бұрын
You're not dumb! The maps from Wizards are unfortunately not very consistent. I think it's because they adjust them to fit in the books but then never fix it in the digital edition :(. With a mixture of stretching the map in different directions you can normally get *decent* approximation of where the grid should be though. It can be hard to explain via comment but if you hop into the Foundry discord there's normally someone who can help figure out what the best settings are (or who have already done it themselves)!
@Nitidus
@Nitidus 3 жыл бұрын
@@EncounterLibrary Aside from the fact that it's quite ridiculous we're supposed to pay twice for most of the books in digital and physical form and then don't even get accurate maps - I believe I get what you're saying about compressing the image to get it right. @@EncounterLibrary thank you so much. Just a peronal preference for me, that I think the full image of an Ogre or a mindlayer invokes more reaction out of people than a vague top down view of a head with some shoulders. @EncounterLibrary
@EncounterLibrary 3 жыл бұрын
@@Radenshaal I can totally dig that. Unfortunately the image will be restricted in size to however many grid space its set to take up. Does foundry have a way for the gm to only see what the pcs see? I stream dnd on r20 and generally have 2 windows open, one as the gm and the other as a player to broadcast on stream, so the audience gets the exact same view as pcs. Ive tied all player tokens to include myself so on the player screen i see the same vision as everyone while i finagle all the behind the scenes movement, etc on my second window, the gm view. It seems that doing this in foundry is a bit more difficult. Is it possible to set up an observer role that has vision through all character tokens?

Yes, depending on what you want out of a VTT. Foundry is more powerful because it's more extensible via the community built addons. Roll20 is simpler so it's a bit easier.
