Shawn, seeing your beautiful wood stove brings back memories of my grandmother who refused to give up hers in favor of a gas stove my dad & his brother & sisters wanted to buy for her. The bread she baked in it was the best I've ever tasted. RIP gram.

@@MySelfReliance Hope all is well , but just in case you're still having parasites or just for future reference : Old-fashioned real turpentine is very good at getting rid of parasites and many other ailments ... pretty much a cure-all and was always used by the mountain people , especially in the Appalachians . Not the dangerous stuff with the petroleum distillates like hardware stores sell , but where just the sap of the pine tree is used . Haven't used it in a while but Diamond G Forest brand from Georgia is powerful stuff . ( very quickly got rid of a middle ear infection ... within 20 minutes of taking it , the inner ear was very hot ; could feel it attacking the infection ... pain , dizziness , nausea stopped within a half-hour taking it . ) Diamond G Forest used to have some vids , I don't know if they still do . ( it can be a bit rough on the stomach for some people ) . Extract of black walnut is also pretty good at getting rid of parasites . There's also Neem powder or neem tea ( I don't know if you're able to grow neem trees where you're at ... I know they thrive in very warm climate . ) Doing too much of Neem or turpentine can be very drying for the skin though , so , maybe do some organic grass fed ghee ( good for skin and joints ) ... it's very good in coffee or hot tea , and other hot beverages .

Shawn, As a loyal viewer the past 5 years, I used to “know” that every Friday morning I could count on your latest KZfaq video both to end the week and kick off the weekend. Yes, I understand that “life happens” and interrupts things from time to time, and you’re due vacation time, heaven knows. But Fridays just aren’t the same. 😕 Don’t worry, I’m still a huge fan. 🙂

Shawn doesn't say much about what his wife thinks of his back woods cabin. From watching all of his videos she strikes me as a city girl that could only live a week at the most off grid. That could cause problems in the future for Shawn. Shawn seems completely able to live with his dog and not need any other humans in his life.

Shawn, on splitting those river rock, try building a fire and putting the rock in the fire. The moisture in the rock will usually split them right in the center, also when attaching the stone to the Durock (that’s the good stuff, anyone wanting to build a good shower enclosure, that’s the stuff to use) start at the top, use a notched trowel and work your way down and you won’t get grout or mortar all over your work. Nice job, it should look great when your done. Are you going to build another wood burning oven (like your pizza or bread oven from your first place, that seemed like such a nice addition when you built it and it seemed like you used it quite a bit.

My dad loved to cook on a wood stove. He had one when we were growing up, he would get up and make a fire in it when we had to go to school. We would then get dressed behind it on cold mornings. That was in 1949 when I was 13 and the chore I enjoyed was chopping up the kindling and wood for the stove. It looked like yours but probably wider. The stove-top was solid steel with the holes that were usually covered. The there were two electric round plates. The upper was likely a warming oven heated by electricity.--Sigh,

To Mr. Shawn James; First, let me thank you for your service demonstrating how to be a better human being in this world today. I have watched all your KZfaq videos and Emily’s as well and found myself wishing that I was your son and 40 years younger. I’m 73 this year. Had I learned of you back then I would have made my way to you and begged to be your apprentice. I know that you say you’re not a carpenter, nor any kind of an outdoors woodsman but I think that I could do what you have done and improve my life and community as well. I have studied architecture, have designed/built several small inner-city projects but there is nothing that compares to living by your own two hands, improving the land and gathering your own food. Being responsible for yourself and your family is empowering. I too was enthralled by watching Dick Proenneke when he came on PBS. It fit right in with my scouting and wilderness training. Looking back on my years of living vicariously through PBS shows like Nature and NOVA, books and articles from Henry David Thoreau, John Muir and John James Audubon to name a few, I have longed to practice that lifestyle. I love to follow my ancestors from the Native peoples of the Americas using good stewardship of the land, sea and air. So be encouraged! Keep up your spirit, lifestyle and family. You have helped and are helping so many by showing us, in your small example, what can be done if we just do it!

Well, I have watched you bill your Home for the second time which I have seen the last few years has been amazing. I love this place and I can see why you wanted to get out of rat race. Homes are never really finished because of improvement thru the years. Your wife have been thrilled at this place. You got so many iron in the fire I would love to see more of the garden if possible.

Love the beautiful wood cooking stove. Plus would love to have a kitchen like this. You are amazing with all of the upgrades you have done with your home.

Thank you for this beautiful video. I'm not able to be outside except dusk and dawn due to extreme heat index here. It's nice to 'be outside', even vicariously.

The outdoor kitchen is coming along great. If you installed some of those solar tube lights I think it would bring in some good natural light, especially by the cabin entrance.

Very motivational to me. And I'm not lazy. Makes me want to invent new projects. Enjoy your videos. I'm canning Okra pickles today. It's a Florida thing.

Wow, that kitchen is a huge extention of the cabin, love the stove, please tell me you don`t have to break all of the stones in half to get a flat side, what a job that will be. With the kitchen, and a bedroom addition this cabin is going to have some pretty good square footing to it, love that table, simple beautiful design, you never cease to amaze me with what you can do without power tools, I couldn`t build that table if I was in a woodshop, your cutting 45`s by hand on a 6x6 timber, crazy.

nice idea of the rock tub wall ... a cold chisel will help split them rocks too .. (cold coal .... made to break coal into smaller chunks for a coal furnace)
