TIP: if you hold your handheld radio in your hand, then place radio hand on top of car......you will magnify your groundplain. as most heldheld walkie's use your body as the groundplain.

If one prefers they can literally use a flat metal cookie sheet for use as a ground plane indoors with a mag mount antenna as well. I find it impossible to find Folgers coffee in a metal container anymore!

I just use my radios belt clip and put it on a sign on post within reach. The capacitance helps but I also have a couple alligator clip test leads and will clip one end to the outside of antenna BNC connector and the other onto the metal sign/fencepost. I do it regularly with my handheld CB radio and telescopic 51 inch antenna more.

We all did this in the 70s , DV27 on a Biscuit tin with loads of Aluminium foil, great ground plane

For ham radio hand held google twin lead antenna and roll your own antenna. Roll a thin wire under the base of the exisring rubber duck antenna and dangle 6 inches of wire as a counterpoise/artificial ground.

I have a few of those RS anttennas. The can be used for transmitting. The data sheet that came with them gave this formula. Use this formula to calculate the proper length for a 1/4 wavelength transmitting antenna: 2834 Freq. in MHz = Antenna Length in Inches!

I have an Icom hand scanner which I used to use to listen to aircraft. I now want to listen to marine frequencies and thought about buying a new antenna. Which one would you recommend, it would need to have an SMA male connector. Thank you

for receiving a externally mounted Discone antenna works best, but if you want something cheap just get a uhf/vhf tv antenna on a mast and lightning suppressor. the tv antenna hides what you are doing and it gives you boosted reception , you can even mount a rotor to change the direction the antenna receives. for even more stealth, mount the biggest tv antenna that you can fit into your attic.

And if you rotate the whole outdoor TV antenna sideways and remount it, so you are vertically polarized instead of horizontally polarized, it would help much more in this one. and now you have a directional scanner beam and rotor for longer range scanner listening..

Hi, can you please help me out build an external receiver antenna for my SONY AIR-8 scanner? As a licensed private pilot, I would want to mainly monitor the airband frequency of 118 - 136 MHz. Also, I plan to install the antenna on top of our steel water tank and will have a height of 50 feet from the ground.

I got 3 questions. Can the can be painted (if so, does a magnetic car antenna need to sit on bare metal), does it need to be outside and can a bigger can be used? Sorry I am new to radios.

bigger the can the better. with a mag mount the paint would not matter much. remember a mag mount uses an entire painted car as its its ground plain

Anyone know if one could make a horizontal unit to hold the antenna to put on a window sill instead of a round can ?

Well you need the flat metal surface as a ground plane, but you could nail the lid of of the can to a wooden dowel and stick that out your window. That would work great.

I have roughly a 3 1/4 in window sill where I could sit the antenna. I have some scrap thick square channel left over from a garage door opener that should easily hold the antenna. I suppose I could make an inverted T instead of the square channel just for a bit of extra height. I guess what I'm asking is whether its just the height of the antenna that makes the difference or will the additional steel help the reception ? Thanks

You could always get a small bit of sheet steel and put the antenna on that, then put that in your window and close it tight. Height and a good ground plane (the steel) will both help a lot. The higher you are the better.

I used a "T" BNC adapter and made 2 of them into a dipole. Works ok and I have done the can things as well and it helps but not as much as finding a larger ground plane, but it works. For transmitting too!

i am using a CEECOM ANTENNA united kingdom made picks up very well in doors on my hand held uniden bearcat ubc125xlt picks up air craft very good antenna is about 5ft long you can get these from www.CEECOM.CO.UK by the way good video
